Summary: Spider-man is the king of movies
Review: This movie had great special effects, and the story was interesting. This will be a clasic like Star Wars.

Summary: Hi.
Review: Spider-Man is a great movie, my second favorite of 2002 (behind a certain movie featuring hobbits), and anyone with a brain should see this. Peter Parker is a teenage wallflower that, once bitten by a genetically enhanced spider, turns into... a gymnast. Or at least he dresses like one. He gets many powers that spiders possess and uses them to fight crime after a carjacker murders his uncle. Mary Jane, Parker's dream girl, is dating Parker's friend, Harry. Harry's dad, Norman, is a corporate CEO manufacturing military upgrades. He tests them on himself once and goes nuts, becoming the major villain (and the only real one). Great DVD, better movie, definitely a must-own.

Summary: Spider bites
Review: Spider-man, based on the comic, personifies the spider, who is also a super-hero, with strength and agility along with the ability to spray his web wherever he chooses. Peter Parker, or Spider-man out of hero mode, is a young student who gets bit by a spider and achieves super powers. Peter eventually uses his powers to fight off criminals, and those who hurt others. He eventually encounters the Green Goblin, played by Willem Dafoe, who is his friends' father when not out on the streets causing trouble. In the film, Peter's character has a crush on a girl he knew growing up, M.J.. M.J. is our 'damsel in distress' who is seemingly always in need of help, and has perfected the art of screeching for aid. Our two super powered characters are both male, one in search of power, money, and Spider-man's neck, the other, trying to attain his love, M.J.. M.J. is objectified and made to seem like a dumb girl who needs a smart strong man to save her. The panoptical view of the hero, who sees all evil, seems to also see M.J. and focus his life-saving abilities on achieving a mate. Overall the film is pleasing to the eye, and allows for critical thinking on how woman are portrayed in movies that mainly focusing on young audiences.

Summary: review I wrote in '03 after seeing this film at the theater
Review: Q. What kind of lab is it that's letting (a) genetically engineered spiders (b) escape (c) without sounding some kind of alarm and evacuating?

A. A lab funded by the same (a) government that's (b) funding the development of superhuman drugs! Wow. Now that's not a grim take on the moral status of our society, is it? Read: politicians are all just (a) a bunch of greedy klutzes, who are (b) in mismanaged cahoots with evil, EVIL corporations. Come to think of it, take out all the questionable science and gross caricatures and it's probably a pretty accurate depiction. Too bad, sob, there're no superheroes to foil evil corporagovernment plots in the real world. Or, maybe there are.....hmmmm. Yes, that's right, the real heroes are ordinary people just like you and me. (Cue strings.) (Thank you, Ms. Brockovich.) But then Spidey's not ABOUT ordinary people (and arguably neither is Erin B.). With the exception of course of the cheer-begging scene in which a group of "average" citizens (who for some reason look a bit like gangsters) throw sticks and stones at the Green Gobby. There, this one's for you NYC: "You mess with one of us, you mess with all of us." In an era without conscription, it may be the closest thing we ever get to a draft-peer pressure - which, relatively speaking, might just be a good thing.

Q. What kind of film has a geeky 17-yo late bloomer suddenly (a) get muscles, stamina, coordination, pubic hair, and The Girl (but also the power over raging hormones to reject a Girl like Kirsten Dunst) and (b) realize that he can, um, well, er, shoot white bits of stuff out of his body in spurts? (Sorry, but I couldn't help read it that way. Watch again if you're not convinced.)

A. Why, a coming of age film, of course. The mantra: "With power comes responsibility." Or something like that. Brought to you by the writers of other such meaty works as Gone in 60 Seconds and The Lost World: Jurassic Park, Spidey seems a little more keen on moralizing about what it might actually mean to be buff than most movies with explosions. It may be that it doesn't even come close to contributing anything substantial to the post-9/11 talk of heroism; heck, boil them all down and the kernel concept of Batman, Superman, and X-men, et al. is really just to have a guy go out and rescue kittens out of trees (in which helpless citizens caught in a cruel world stand in for the kittens and trees). As always, the real world, a great deal of which-perhaps even the most important part of which-takes place at home, is a lot more difficult and complicated. Even so, after seeing the coming attraction for yet another Adam Sandler bit of tripe in which he plays yet another 35-yo regressed "big kid" who acts irresponsible all over everyone and tries for yet even more uncomfortable chuckles with yet even more oops-I-pooped-my-pants looks, a kind of entertainment in which the overall idea seems to be that a young man should try to act his age and try to have some consideration for other people was yet even more welcome.

Minor complaints, file under "Violations of Realism Above and Beyond the call of Entertainment":

1) Uncle Ben gets shot and killed in (a) (I know...it goes with the genre) a seemingly constantly violent city in which (b), sadly for dear Aunt May, the authorities don't seem to make a practice of informing the families of homicide victims.

2) Longtime uncoordinated school (...) Peter Parker does a triple summersault in midair from a standing position and punches a guy halfway down the hall...well, you see where I'm going with this, or maybe where he would have gone in a real world: into restraints.

3) Oh, and while I'm at it, there are obviously witnesses to the cafeteria tray incident as well (webs and all), and then this Spider-Man guy starts appearing all over the city? And no one stops to think, hey...could it be...maybe. Okay, okay. Now I'm picking apart the whole genre. I guess ever since we collectively agreed to believe that all it takes is a pair of fake glasses for Superman to fool everyone.... Shows you what we think of ourselves, doesn't it! And maybe that's the best lesson of all.

Summary: SPIDER MAN!!!!
Review: whoa now that's a movie, It was a very action pack leave you guessing what will happen next, type of movie. It is a very good movie and if you like Spider Man and have not seen this yet. Then go slap your self across the face as hard as you can. This movie makes the Hulk look like a pile of you-know-what. Oh yeah you remember that part of the movie when Peter Parker was looking at his muscles in the mirror, those were mine. They just turned it into a white mans body. but it's kool but anyway it was a very good movie

Summary: Surprisingly Funny
Review: I laughed throughout the entire film, which I did not expect. I guess I was expecting something more along the lines of _Hulk,_ which this movie resembles in some ways--a nerdish brainiac becomes a superhero. In this case, it's an outcast and picked-on teenager, who, after getting bitten by a genetically-engineered "super spider," ends up with spinnerts in his wrists and an ability to swing from skyscraper to skyscraper while yelling "Yee haw!" Throw in a reckless but still sympathetic scientist, who,
courtesy of some advanced technology, becomes insane and turns into the Green Goblin, and what we have is a funny, poignant movie that just about everyone will be able to identify with.

Summary: Shame on you, Columbia, for making us buy a 3rd copy!!!
Review: The only redeeming value of this disc, besides the Superbit transfer, is an exclusive Tobey Maguire commentary track recorded for a 1-time-only web-showing of the movie in 2003. The upcoming Deluxe version of the movie DOES NOT have this commentary track, and there's no other features to this disc.

So, if all you collectors want EVERYTHING there is to Spider-Man, you'll have to buy the discontinued collector's gift set (to get all the comics, Stan Lee DVD, senitype, and lithograph), the Deluxe version (for all the extras), and the Superbit version (for the Maguire commentary track).

Rating: 3 stars
Summary: Shame on you Columbia for this incomplete re-release!!!
Review: Why call this a Deluxe Edition, when purchasers of the Superbit edition get an exclusive Tobey Maguire commentary track (recorded for a special web-only showing of the movie in 2003). Funny that the Superbit version has no extra features, nor other commentary tracks, besides the Maguire track.
