Summary: A Great Movie for All
Review: Like I've mentioned in other reviews, I've been a comics fan for most of my life. This movie came out a little after I was born, so I don't remember seeing it before now. Boy, was I in for a treat.
The movie starts with a Gotham family being robbed on their way home from a night on the town. We see a shadowy figure watch the whole thing, then skulk away. We then see the two perps, counting their stolen goods, when this shadowy figure confronts them. It's Batman!
The beginning is enough to make any Batman fan squeal with delight, and for average movie fans to enjoy. The plot centralizes around Bruce Wayne (Michael Keaton), who saw his parents murdered right in front of him many years ago, and how he becomes Batman to rid the streets of Gotham of the evil that claimed his parents lives. It also focuses on Jack Napier (Jack Nicholson), a mob man ratted out by his own boss. Falling into a vat of chemicals on a botched espionage mission (at Batman's ahnds, no less) he becomes the Joker, a deranged madman.
Keaton does an excellent job as both Bruce Wayne and Batman. Although not physically intimidating, he has a wonderful screen presence. Nicholson was the true star of the movie, playing the Joker in a manner that was very true to the comics and should delight all fans. Kim Bassinger does well wth what she's given as Vicki Vale, a photographer who comes to get snapshots of Batman and ends up dating, who else?, Bruce Wayne.
Tim Burton's artistic vision is what makes this movie so powerful. Being a budding comic artist himself, he's able to appreciate how a panel of a comic should translate to the screen. This movie could have failed miserably if it weren't for him.
Overall, this movie not only pleases Batman fans, but the general public. I give this my highest recommendation

Summary: The Greatest Of All Batman Films!
Review: You have to hand it to Tim Burton. He once again made a classic. His unqiue look at the story of Batman has never been out done. The score is excellent and the climax is memorable. The acting is great. Michael Keaton surprised everyone with his dark and memorable potrayl as the dark knight has never been surpassed. Jack Nicholson can not be described by any word. His insane villianous acting burys all the later villians to come. Kim Bassinger rates second only to Michelle Pheifer as the best actress in the film series. As for the rest of the cast,the supporting actors and actresses are excellent even in their small roles. Billy Dee Williams and Jack Palance had limited screen time. But in the times they were seen and heard, they acted wonderfully. This film is surely a classic. The darkness, the sadness, and the great cast and crew make this film hard to miss. It surely is the best of all Batman films that have ever come. The new director of the Batman series destroyed the good name of Batman. If their is any justice, Joel Shucmacher will never be allowed to direct antoher Batman movie again. The greatness of this film make it impossible to miss. As advice, watch this film, the second one, and finish it off at the third one. The forth one is a waste of time and money!

Summary: Like "Superman" this first entry is the best!!!!!
Review: Released in the summer of 1989, this film rocked at the box-office, MichaelKeaton brought warmth & humanity to not only Bruce Wayne, but Batman as well, Keaton's facial expressions convey that of a wounded soul, Jack Nicholson finally played the role he was born to play as the crazy,off the wall Joker who's gags never get old, especially when he takes over for his deceased boss(Jack Palance)by telling his cronies to think it over after killing one who disagreed with him in a comical way, Nicholson is over the top as Joker, you can tell he had fun here, as he faces off with Batman in the end by displaying a gun that would put "Dirty Harry" to shame, Kim Basinger lends support as Keaton's somewhat girlfriend who is after the story surrounding Batman, & is targeted by the Joker, one of te best scenes that plays on emotions is the flashback scene where Keaton discovers that Jack Napier/Joker was the one responsible for his parents murder, which gets him in a vengence mode, as he destroys Joker's operating compound with the Batmobile, one of Cinema's coolest cars, their showdown at the end is very gothic, but satisfying, its sequel "Batman Returns" was less that perfect, if only they hadn't put Danny DeVito under a ton of makeup, it might have been better, but this one is the best of them all, "Batman Forever" is as good as this one, despite Keaton's absence, but avoid "Batman & Robin" at all costs!!!!!!!

Summary: Low quality DVD, great movie
Review: It's a shame they released this DVD in the condition it's in. This was a huge, blockbuster movie that made a ton of money and it's not that old so there's no excuse. Also, there are hardly any extras.

The movie starts out with some obvious defects and spots on the film in the opening. It's like they didn't even try to find a good print from which to master the DVD. The 5.1 dolby digital soundtrack is among the worst I have heard. This is supposed to be a loud, movie with lots of action. Things like explosions barely even register on the subwoofer. The movie makes almost no use of the surround speakers. It might as well be mono. It's that bad. Then again, the DVD is better than any VHS and at least it's in widescreen which is how it should be unless you enjoy seeing only half the movie. My advice, wait until they remaster this and issue it as a special addition. I wish I had waited to buy it because the shortcomings of the DVD stood out for me so much that it detracted from my enjoyment of the movie.

Summary: The way Batman should be
Review: What can I say about 'Batman'? Tim Burton has done his usual wonderful job. The thing about this Batman is the creativity. Batman's outfit (rubber and latex) is one of a kind. Ever since its appearance in this movie, other Batman suits have followed in line. Even the upcoming 'Birds of Prey' t.v. show to air on WB has Batman in the rubber. Micheal Keaton as Batman is suprising if you are familiar with him before this movie. Keaton however does a wonderful job of displaying a duel identity. His Batman is so different from his Bruce Wayne. Jack Nicholson as the Joker is wonderful. I am very happy to inform that The Joker's signia hand buzzer and acid flower are in the movie. Very exciting to see him shoot acid at Kim Basinger. To put things over the top, Batman did win an Acadamy Award for Best Art Direction. Not that many people know that. All in all, get Batman.

Summary: Dark, gruesome, and awesome...
Review: Michael Keaton dons the cape and cowl in what is the best of the live-action Batman movies. No Robin in this one, as it centers around the origin of Batman and Joker. Tim Burton's directing is dark and almost scary. The sets for Gotham City were revolutionary at the time, looking gloomy and melancholy. Gotham is a dirty, ugly city and Burton portrays that perfectly. One complaint: there could have been more development of Batman. Keaton is given little to do here, but he makes a good Batman nonetheless. Most notably is Jack Nicholson's performance as the Joker. His presence in this movie is enough alone to steal the show. Nicholson is a highly talented actor and this movie confirms that statement.

Summary: Tim Burton Brings the Dark Knight Detective to Life
Review: It was nothing less than pure genius of Tim Burton to give the cartoonish image of Batman a 180 degree transmutation. Gone are the campy elements perpetuated by the 1960's television series. Burton's film noir-like vision of the DC Comic is intensely stylish and dark, putting the Gothic into Gotham.

"Batman" opens with a nihilistic, almost surreal depiction of Gotham City. In a city governed by violence and corruption, the mayor is struggling to restore confidence in the denizens before Gotham's 200th anniversary celebration takes place. Meanwhile, a mysterious vigilante dressed as a bat is executing his own war on crime. When the psychotic gangster, Jack Napier, is cozened into burglarizing a chemical factory, the Caped Crusader gives him an appointment with a vat of chemicals that transforms him into the Joker, an eternally simpering clown who hatches an insidious plot against the citizens of Gotham city. Action-packed entertainment ensues.

Tim Burton balances the dark tone of the film with just the right amount of tongue in cheek, as evident in several bitingly witty scenes. Michael Keaton's cleverly eccentric portrayal of Batman/Bruce Wayne imbues the character with as much dimensionality as it can bare. Jack Nicholson's sardonic performance as the maniacal Joker is simply brilliant. There are also several other superb performances including Kim Basinger as Vicki Vale, Pat Hingle as Commissioner Gordon, and Michael Gough as Bruce Wayne's genteel butler, Alfred. Danny Elfman's supremely original and stylish score is a classic, fitting the Gothic mood of the film like a well-tailored suit. Along with an engaging story and colorful characters, "Batman" is replete with astonishing eye candy and clever tricks like the sleek-looking Batmobille, and the Baterang. "Where does he get those wonderful toys?" The Batwing is one of the most spectacular contraptions (contraption is misnomer) ever to streak across the silver screen. The action scenes are expertly choreographed and entertaining. And the climactic battle between Batman and The Joker in the Gotham City Cathedral is a satisfying finish. This is the way to make a film based on a comic book!
