Summary: Actually fairly decent film - less cheesy than I thought
Review: "Hulk" (don't get me started on why Hollywood excises the word: 'The' from titles) is actually a fairly decent movie. I was amazed at this because the previews and trailers for the film make it look really cheesy and the Hulk, himself, more than a bit fake. I waited until it hid DVD to rent it and I was more than a bit surprised to find that not only is this unlike any other "superhero" or "comic book" movie, it is more drama than action.That "Hulk" didn't garner record breaking crowds may speak more to the nature of the film than the nature of the subject matter. Moviegoers, especially kids, would be expecting a big green monster rampaging throughout this film - and that, quite simply, isn't the case. This is a drama with a sci-fi twist. Bruce Banner becomes the Hulk, as we all know, when he is zapped with gamma radiation. However, it is his father that starts the process (which is more Greek tragedy than Jekyll and Hyde remake) when he altered his own DNA before getting his wife pregnant with Bruce. The movie is about redemption and revenge and the Hulk is a pawn in the process rather than the catalyst. This makes for rather interesting movie fare, since you don't expect this. Eric Bana, Jennifer Connelly, and Sam Elliot turn in really thoughtful and fleshed out performances that make this movie more realistic than it could have been. The Hulk (a CGI effect) is really far more realistic looking than I expected since the trailers and commercials don't do him justice. And the Hulk is a decent actor himself. His skin moves appropriately and so does his hair. The muscles under the skin move. In all, if he weren't green, you might actually believe he was real. Possibly the biggest problem with this film is its greatest achievement: rising above juvenile fare and actually presenting itself as drama. The audience isn't expecting this and as a result the movie comes across as slow and plodding at times. Lee's film is thoughtful and intelligent, but is that what we really want in a comic book superhero film? The scenes with the Hulk are exciting and you actually crave more of them. The dramatic scenes are good, but you really want the film to get going and get to the action. In all, I'd have to say this is a really decent film. I enjoyed it far more than I ever thought I would. I would even say that seeing it a second time might provide some additional insights into the characters. That's high praise for what could have been escapist fluff.

Review: The movie is incredible! The special effects fantastic. The story line a bit sluggish to start but you get past that. The comic-book style is very different but effective and fun.
PARENTS - definitely pay attention to the rating and don't slack on this one. It is PG-13. Don't hedge and let the younger kids watch it - or if you do - expect some nightmares. Scenes of child abandonment from a 2-year-old's perspective, animal lab testing that gets graphic, parents fighting violently behind a closed door from a 5-year-old's perspective and then just the general anger management the good doctor experiences by letting it all out in green.
My husband loved it! I liked it. With all the marketing of Hulk kids toys, it seems to set this up as something it is not.
Adults and *older* teens ENJOY! The little guys need to go to bed before you hit play on this one.

Review: this movie certainly wasnt a bad movie it was a "Hulk" movie that alone is something that will never shake my attitude seeing the Hulk fighting tanks jumping canyons etc.. is something for everyone to see....the story on the other hand was actually pretty good yes it was long and boring when i first saw it but when u see it again you realize what you have missed the story was brilliant slow paced to build up the action for the appeareance of the Hulk this is a must buy on DVD Two Thumbs Up

Summary: An Uneven Ride with a Big Green Monster
Review: Dr. David Banner was a scientist working for the military on a project to create a perfect soldier. But he aspired to improve his own biology and so tested his discoveries on himself. Inadvertently, the resulting cell mutations were passed on to his son, Bruce. 30 years later, Bruce (Eric Bana) is an accomplished biologist himself with no memory of the fate that befell his father when he was a boy. When a lab accident exposes him to heavy doses of gamma radiation, the effect on his already abnormal cells is unlike that of a normal human. When he becomes angry, Bruce is transformed into something possessed of rage and great strength -a creature that intellect cannot control. When the military learns of Bruce's metamorphosis, it becomes obsessed with destroying this creature whose rage can unleash such terrific destructive forces. "Hulk" is based on the "The Incredible Hulk " Marvel comic books, which were also the basis for the 1970's television series of the same name. I haven't read the comic books, but I saw the television series, and "Hulk" doesn't remind me of it in the least. The comic book and the television series were both episodic, whereas the film has to confine itself to only one story. That, in itself, limits the character of Bruce Banner tremendously. There is some good stuff in this film. The relationship between the father's ambitions and his son's fate is interesting. Eric Bana is well suited to the role of Bruce Banner, but unfortunately he isn't given much to do. The first half of the film has a surprisingly slow pace for an action movie. It lingers on details that really aren't necessary to tell the story. This is not entirely bad, but it is bound to be off-putting to an audience that expects an adrenaline rush, as are the subdued personalities of Bruce Banner and his colleague and love interest Betty Ross (Jennifer Connelly). The appearance of the Hulk, itself, is problematic. The creature is an entirely digital creation. It doesn't look organic, except perhaps for its face, and it stands nearly three times as tall as an average human. In other words, Hulk's appearance is an obstacle to his credibility. Sometimes his expressive eyes succeed in reminding us that he is a man. At other times, his physique and antics are so spectacular that he loses all connection to humanity, and the audience loses all connection to him. At this point, the film is not succeeding; it looks a lot like one of those old alien invasion movies where the military gangs up on some giant monster from another planet. And "Hulk" falls into the "computer game trap" that so many modern action movies do: The digitally enhanced fight sequences look like a video game instead of like a movie. The present state of digital effects reminds me of the early generations of photographic special effects: hokey. "Hulk" is just a very uneven film. Sometimes it works; sometimes it fails miserably. Recommended as a rental.

Summary: Not enough action?
Review: You've probably read all you need to about this flick from the other reviews, but I thought I should address the criticism that The Hulk doesn't have enough action. You'll probably be disappointed if you're expecting the same sort of near-nonstop wham bang thrills as we saw in 2000's Spiderman. However, if you're even slightly more patient than the "average" moviegoer, the characters scenes in this movie are acted genuinely enough that when you get to the action sequences, they're that much more intense and rewarding. When I saw the Hulk in the theater, my jaw fell open at the beginning of the desert battle and stayed there. Impressive stuff.

Review: Easily up there with the best comic book movies of all time! Only people who have no appreciation for art and prefer movies like Scorpion King would give Hulk a low rating. Ang Lee is brilliant!

Summary: It's not easy being green
Review: There are movies these days that have partially or entirely computer-generated characters, usually not human. In 1998, we got the (quite unjustly) underrated GODZILLA, as well as SMALL SOLDIERS. in 1999, we got the (quite unjustly) overrated STUART LITTLE, and the kick ass TOY STORY 2. And in 2002, there was SPIDER-MAN. So now, after years of being stuck in the realm of comic books (and television; Lou Ferrigno is a worthy non-CG green gargantua), HULK gets a shot at silver screen prominence.
And it get's a perfect bull's eye. What are those people who didn't like HULK talking when they say it didn't have enough action? Are they $#!**ing me? Hello? The Hulk trashes a lab, goes at it with a pack of Hulk-dogs, throws couches, people, cars, tanks, and about everything else he can gets his hands on, gets a trip into the stratosphere on an F-15, etc., etc., etc. What more do you want? The Hulk to marry Betty Ross? Well, if you do, just wait until HULK 2, dammit!

Summary: The Movie Ends Up Being Long And Boring
Review: When I decided to see watch The Hulk at the theaters, it was because I had nothing else do to. I realized I could have spent two hours and fifteen minutes doing something else. The movie was unneccsary too long and everytime you thing you are ready for some great action the movie slows down again. It took a full hour to finally see the big green guy as well. The acting of this movie will not exite anybody either. It is fair to say that Nick Nolte does a respectable job as Bruce Banner's father. To my suprise Jennifer Connolly did not have it in this movie. Also, Eric Bana is far from special. The ladies also get see him naked, not completly though. At the end of the film, when we see the hulk walking around the dessert smashing things having some fun, the viewer would want to know what took so long see some action. Thses movie did not have much, it clearly lacked action. The bottom line is that it could hav been terrible but is far from good.

Summary: An excellent DVD for AV fans' personal collection
Review: I admit that it might be a little bit boring to watch this relatively long movie in a theatre. However, as a DVD, which you can immediately jump to chapter 20 (totally 28 chapters) when Hulk started to show his power against the armies, it rocks. The visual effect by ILM is stunning, The directorship and choreography is excellent. Most importantly, if you have a good 5.1 system, you really can replay and rewatch it so many times. In fact, the sound effect of it is much better than other comic movies in 2003 like X-men 2 and DareDevil. In short, if you have an appetite for good home AV effect DVD, this is a must buy. If not, please neglect this review.
