Rating: Summary: Best Movie Ever! Review: This is the best movie ever made! A must see!
Rating: Summary: Entertaining and Fun Review: This is one of my favorite movies. Well-paced, with a deft balance of comedy and drama, fantastic sword fights, and a dash of romance, "The Mask of Zorro" is one of those rare films that seems to bring it all together. While Antonio Banderas does a wonderful job of bringing some personality to the role of Zorro, I'd also like to take this opportunity to commend Catherine Zeta Jones for her performance. While much has been said about her breathtaking close-ups (and there are thankfully a lot of them), I appreciated her often tongue-in-cheek take on the character of Elena. As a DVD, "Mask" is also above average. Nice transfer of video and audio throughout with ample language and sound controls. A short, but welcome list of extras including trailer, and a mini featurette round out this title. Highly Recommended.
Rating: Summary: THIS IS ONE OF MY FAVORITES Review: The story line is one of the best. James Horner composed the music. He's the best composer. So the music is the best. The action is great. There is humor. What more can you ask for? I can't count how many times I've seen the movie. This movie is really touching and exciting to watch. It's a classic. Please see this movie today and you'll be sure to own it instantly. Just like me!
Rating: Summary: Romantic Revival Review: Created in 1918, the character of Zorro has captured romantic hearts and adventurous swash-buckling connoisseurs alike. Who can resist a scamp of a man who rides a wild steed, sears a "Z" with his , dare I say it, phallic sword, woos the women, and fights the good fight? In this "Mask of Zorro" remake, I was totally enthralled by the lush costuming. A mask may just be a mask, but when worn by Antonio Banderas as he playfully disrobes Catherine Zeta-Jones whilst verbally and physically fencing this beauty, a deep sigh is indeed called for. Anthony Hopkins, as an aging Don Diego, is wickedly subtle while training his hand-picked "new" Zorro. And the action packed adventures swarm on with renewed vigor. I liked the 1940 version with Tyrone Power and Douglas Fairbanks--I love this romantic revival. A fun, flashy, film to escape with. Thank you for your interest & comments--CDS
Rating: Summary: SPANISH BEAUTY(MASK OF ZORRO) Review: Gorgeous background, impecably directed, and beautifully acted are all the virtues of this beautiful Steven Spielberg's feature. Outstanding performances by Anthony Hopkins, Antonio Banderas, and the beautiful english woman Zeta-Jones. This movie brings spanish magic and passion to the screen like no other piece of film. Anthony Hopkins brings feeling and magnetism, Antonio Banderas brings originality to the true Spanish Zorro, and he also brings compassion and personality. Catherine Zeta-Jones is portrayed beautifully, both humble and passionate. Steven Spielberg's repertoire and directing expertise are fantastic.
Rating: Summary: Zorro has many lives Review: How long can this guy live and how many times can this simpletheme play? The answer is infinite, when you gather a cast likeHopkins, Banderas, and Zeta-Jones. The Zorro character, created in the early 1900's, first played on the silver screen in the 40's and then on TV in the 50's. Now he's back, this time on the wide-screen. I had my doubts, I mean it's strictly swashbuckling good-guys, bad-buys stuff, which bores me quickly, but I just wasn't ready for this. Sparks start flying immediately and barely letup throughout the tale. The principal trio of this cast is just looking for places to explode and they surely don't disappoint. Zeta-Jones in her underwear, dueling Baderas for her father's honor? Really! This scene alone is worth the price of the DVD. And Hopkins, playing the role of an aging Zorro, passing the torch to Banderas is simply incredible. Talk about yanking your emotions around, this actor knows exactly how to pluck each and every cord of the viewer's heartstrings. Topping off this excellent film are the beautiful depictions of an early California with its Spanish flavor. Be sure to bring a large bag on popcorn when you watch this one ---- you'll be glued to your chair for well over an hour.
Rating: Summary: Why did you do it, Anthony? Review: I liked the old Zorro films, the b&w ones they used to show on TV. If you liked them, too, you won't like this Disney-ish remake one bit. The characters are flatter than a washboard, the plot is 100% predictable, the action unspectacular, the "humour" embarrassing. Worst of all: there is absolutely no Zorro magic. That's right, a Zorro film without Zorro magic. The old films lived from the guessing on everybody's part: who is the man with the mask? None of that here. The first Zorro in this film (Anthony Hopkins - why did you do it?) is demasked within ten minutes. The second one (Antonio Banderas) is introduced first as some kind of criminal clown, and then, totally unbelievably, transformed into the man with the mask. The backdrop to the story is a cartoonish depiction of evil Spanish colonial rule and Zorro becomes a quasi-American patriot battling against oppressive foreigners. Uggghh! Also, as has been noted in another review, there is NOTHING in this movie, you haven't seen before. They pieced this one together from Hollywood's trash- and graveyards.
Rating: Summary: Swashbuckling Adventure & Romance Review: This film is an all-time favorite of mine. I didn't think it could get any better. Romance, adventure, passion, suspense, good vrs evil, mixed with magical scenery, magnificent filming and directing, and a truely beautiful heroine. Then I saw the DVD version. Until you've seen it widescreen, you haven't seen Zorro. With 40% more of the original panaramic scope and brighter, more brilliant colors, this DVD will put all others to shame. The included trailor, picture galleries, and featurette are spectacular and put a real spin onto the film itself. I cannot stress the magnificent difference in mediums. If you haven't already, purchase this gorgeous DVD as soon as possible. You'll never regret spending a penny ~ and get a few glimpses you'd never seen before of Zorro and his world.
