Summary: Could be better
Review: Nicest DVD quality & interactive programe I have seen so far. As for the movie, special effect, sound and cinematographic are great, but, the mood of the movie is rather un-smoothy.

The main plot of the movie is very good and interesting. I've seen lots of Sci-fi/action movies, this one is just not up to its reputation. The exitements and mistyrius built up from the beginning and peak up to climax within the first 30 minutes of the film, then it started to decline, then some boring scences came in. Also 2-3 times, there were dialoques that made me expected that the good stuffs might come up. Then the movies ended. The movie is not too short but I think they organized the story poorly. Don't know who to blame, but this movie could be better, really.

Oh, one more thing, Keanu Reeve never looks better (since he had relatively less lines to speak).

Summary: The Matrix as science fiction?
Review: Firstly, I have to confess that I'm not much of a cinemagoer. So I've never caught The Matrix on the big screen like some other people might have. More's the pity, because it simply isn't possible to appreciate how good this film is when you're watching it on video. On the other hand, if you're lucky enough to have a DVD player, you can finally appreciate this film the way its creators wanted it to be.

So what is so good about The Matrix? In recent years, Hollywood seems to have had great difficulty in releasing any genuinely intelligent science fiction films. Star Wars Episode 1: The Phantom Menace, Wild Wild West, Batman and Robin, Lost in Space...the list is seemingly endless. Thanks to the success of the Star Wars films, studio executives seem to think science fiction films are an excuse to print money. This is despite the fact that Star Wars greatest strengths were its character and its plot.

Have these executives ever read Isaac Asimov? Arthur C. Clarke? Ben Bova? Jerry Pournelle? Science fiction wasn't always about big explosions and glossy special effects. At it's heart, the best science fiction stories force people to question what the future may hold, and our perception of reality. 2001: A Space Odyssey is a marvellous example of that.

So in a decade where almost all science fiction films are more oriented towards big explosions and action sequences, it's good to see a movie that finally revisits these classic science fiction themes. And then wraps them in some very memorable big action sequences to make it accessible to mainstream audiences.

But at its heart, The Matrix addresses two important questions - where are we going, and what is reality? In The Matrix, we see a future where humanity has been almost wiped out by the machines that we created. It's a sobering reminder to the current generation not to become too enamoured of technology...that in order to control our destiny we must retain control over what we create.

It also forces us to question reality in a way that I haven't seen a film do...ever. The reality we live in is a computer construct? Impossible! And yet...we see humans perform feats that should be completely impossible. Executing superhuman martial arts combat moves, dodging bullets at lightning speed, constructing worlds out of thin air.

"Is it really so hard to believe?" asks Morpheus. Well...yes, it is actually. But then, The Matrix IS at its heart a science fiction film. And the first pure science fiction film that I've seen in a very long time. I sincerely hope that studio executives are paying attention to its success. Because it shows that treated properly, a science fiction film can be an extremely powerful medium to present some powerful ideas.

Summary: Interesting fiction
Review: This is probably the best acting by Keanu Reeves I have ever seen. The character he plays (Neo) is realistic and it harminizes with the storie's mood. Special effects are the obvious attraction of this movie. They are very innovative. The plot of the story is very interesting, it gives new directions for the sci-fi category. What I really liked about this movie was the mood, the despair of the human kind with all the limitations of human mind. The situation that the human race found itself in the near future requires a totally new way of thinking, it forces people to explore new possibilities and as usually we were up for that challange. It shows the downfalls and the hope for the future. It is definetly a movie worth watching.

Summary: Didn't Go Far Enough
Review: The Matrix is a very interesting concept that was only slightly unfulfilling. The premise of the movie is that human created artificial intelligence has conquered humanity in a man vs. machine war. Under the premise that machines need energy to survive, humans have blocked out the sun to deprive the machines of solar energy. The machines in turn harness one of the greatest producers of electrical energy ever known to provide their needs. That electrical producer is the human body.

The machines breed humans and use the electricity that their bodies produce to their own ends. The machines connect each person into a virtual world known as the matrix. The matrix inputs real world activity into the person's brain to make them believe that they are really living as if they were still in the real world.

A group of humans has managed to break away from the matrix and form a human society below ground. They search the matrix looking for humans to rescue and especially for the 'one'. The one is the one person who will destroy the machines by beating them at their own game, using the matrix to his own end.

Again, it's an interesting concept that is only partially realized. Keanu Reeves gives a surprisingly adequate performance as the one. He doesn't go for his usual over the top dramatics (I am an FBI agent). All of the other performances are equally subdued and low key.

The film breaks down when it falls back on the typical movie formula of good vs. evil near the end. An excellent chance of exploring the idea that man has created the means of his own destruction is missed by two dimensionalizing the main bad guy characters: the agents. What was truly promising about that is that the agents take human form while patrolling the matrix. It is only partially acknowledged when Agent Smith is interrogating Orpheus and he makes the off-hand comment that he and Orpheus are not that different, that they really want the same thing - to be out of the matrix. But it is as quickly dropped.

I guess a passing comment should made regarding the special effects. No movie can solely rely on eye candy to make it great. However, The Matrix does have some dazzling effects that are very crucial to the story and not just a sidebar as in so many other action flicks.

The Matrix is not a bad movie for an average audience. It may disappoint the more hardcore sci-fi genre junkies though.

Summary: The Curates Egg
Review: The hype about this film is unwarranted. True, there are some excellent special effects - realistic ones, but many are too false eg gunfight in hall with pillars when gunfire too easily splinters junks of concrete and it falls like polystyrene - as it is. The storyline is somewhat boring, and I fell asleep during twice trying to view the whole film; the third occasion I managed to stay the course but only by fast-forwarding the chunks of dialogue which apart from being boring were also too far-fetched to be believable. In all the film was much like the Curates egg - a mixed bag - some good some bad. I am in my 60s and have viewed many hundreds of films and, generally, I agree the average viewing star-rating. This time I did not.

Summary: The "reality" of life seeks something more, always!
Review: "The Matrix", for all its unique plot variations, is a simple tale of man wanting more "than just this". We look at the stars at night and go through the motions each day on a small dot within the incomprehensible vastness of space and tell ourselves that there must be something else besides just going through the motions. "The Matrix" offers a theory that reality is an illusion. We gravitate to the message, but ignore the foundation from which the theory is derived. We'd much prefer to believe our lives are pre=programmed and are a grand illusion than to accept biological finiteness and responsibility for our actions. Blame it on the machines we ourselves create - gotta love it!

A great movie with wonderous techno-effects, but one wonders why so many gravitate to a movie which has at its premise that reality is a facade.

I give it five stars not because of its message, but because it is entertainment at its best. Yet, at the same time, its popularity disturbs me because so many wish it wasn't entertainment, but truth.

Have we come so far that we desire to negate ourselves so quickly? Wiping a child's tear away or hugging a loved one does more to compensate for the alienation of the modern world than wishing "The Matrix" to be true.
