Summary: The Matrix scores with special effects
Review: Back in 1999, before the much hyped and anticipated Star Wars Episode 1 was to be released, a little talked about and hyped science fiction movie slipped in under the radar a few months later and dazzled audiences with it's incredible fight scenes and special effects.The Matrix is about a hacker (Keanu Reeves) that discovers he is really part of a huge virtual reality where his body energy powers evil machines that have enslaved mankind. He is rescued by human rebels and told that he is "the one"; the man that will lead humanity out of slavery. Or something. Did I mention people free of the machines had incredible powers and were constantly pursued by some very nasty machines, inside and outside of the matrix? The movie sports a plot that is much more nonsense than brain teaser, but neo-norish settings that make the computer generated backgrounds of The Phantom Menace look kiddy like in comparison. The action is wide and varied, from kung fu fights with machines to shootouts in helicopters to a particularly stunning shootout in a massive, pillar filled lobby. To get to the action, however, can somewhat test your patience, especially if you're not a fan of Keanu's deadpan style of acting. Watch the whole film once, and buy the DVD so you can skip to the action scenes.

Review: Back when the Matrix came out, everyone I knew was telling me to go see it. Admittedly, I was a bit of a Matrix snob. I never saw it, never cared, and was a bit miffed that it stole the thunder from that star wars movie which I had waited on for so long. But around the time that Matrix: Reloaded was showing up and everyone was hyped up, I decided to see what it was all about. I mean, everyone can't be completely wrong. It must be something special. Well, I rented it, and found that it is more than something special. Gladiator was something special, but the Matrix is deservingly cast as a genre shaping phenomena. Usually when entering a movie that I expect will be a huge cheese fest, I wisecrack my way through it. With the Matrix, I started by cracking the usual Keanu Reeves jokes, but quickly shut up. Something about the story was enthralling in a way that a movie had never seemed before. The story was complex, but not indecipherable, the script was well written and compelling, and the Special effects were stunning. For the first time, Keanu Reeves had done a movie that was thought provoking, exciting, and interesting. Never before had fight scenes been so incredible and the slow motion effects that I thought would get old in a hurry, only made the movie better. Rather than just being a slow moving dance, the fight scenes were fast paced and cut to slomo to showcase the best parts. The buildup to Neo being freed and finding he was "the one" was as intriguing as the buildup of the "Agents." Before Neo ever comes up against one, we as the audience are compelled to fear them as much as those in the movies. Cypher's line of: "I don't care who you are, if you see an agent, you do what the rest of us do. You run. You run your ass off" perfectly set up the climactic battle between Neo and Agent Smith. Who, is officially one of the greatest villains in movie history. His calm, cocky, all knowing presence never falters throughout and gives you the sincere feeling that he is the violent patrolman of the Matrix. Without seeing this movie, I would still have hopes that George Lucas could still make his new trilogy more than just eye candy. But, with the Matrix and Lord of the Rings series in front of me proving that excellent acting can accompany and mesh perfectly with great special effects, I say Star What?

Summary: The Matrix set the standard
Review: Back when The Matrix was released on DVD, it was THE DVD to own. It is still very impressive, and simply a "must have" in any serious DVD collection. The movie itself is a wonderful meshing of popular culture and religious themes, the acting is superb, and the action is thrilling. As a computer professional, I am particularly drawn into this film, and can't help but love the way that this movie elevates a talented computer hacker to super-hero status. The special effects are ground breaking, to say the least. But more importantly, these effects are used solely for the purpose of telling the story; they are not gratuitous in any way. No effects are included that don't make sense within the context of the film. The matrix is one of a small class of films that successfully tells a story on many levels simultaniously. Fight Club is another movie that pulls this off brilliantly. For the first part of the film, you are not quite sure what is going on, or who to believe, or who to trust. The characters are enigmatic and larger-than-life. Once the secret is revealed (what "the matrix" is and it's implications), the previously enigmatic characters are developed more fully, and the main character (Neo) begins to grow and change. His life and purpose from then on closely parallels that of Christ, including the fact that, in order to reach his full potential, he must die and be resurrected. If you have been living in a cave for the last two years and have not seen this film, I strongly recommend that you at least rent it and decide for yourself if it speaks to you. But watch it several times before making up your mind, so you can fully appreciate all of the layers and aspects of the story. Movie: Story -> A, Action -> A+, Effects -> A+

Summary: Hmm...best movie ever?
Review: Bam, bam, crash, ahh....a familiar sound in The Matrix. But beneath all that there is a much deeper current flowing: that of philosophy. The Matrix should keep everyone happy: be you brainless rudeboy who just likes violence, vicar of the local church or proffesor of philosophy at Oxford University. Too much has been said about this film already: legions of reviewers before me have pointed out its brilliance: but I stand to join them because I simply cannot give it a bad review. This should be national curriculum, for God's sake. Talking of God, I'm sure NO-ONES pointed this out before me, but have you noticed the relgious connections? Neo is the one (hence Christ), Morpheus brings people into it (hence John the Baptist), the Oracle is to do with the future and gives people advice (hence the Holy Spirit). Cypher (Judas) betrays Neo (Christ) for Agent Smith (the Devil). Its all so obvious! On a more bam-bam note, the special effects are excellent and its great on a good DVD player. This isn't a movie, its an experience.

Summary: The Matrix a sci-fi great
Review: Based in the future after computers have taken over the world a computer hacker, NEO is trying to save to the living world. This is a classic story of the loaner who steps up to the plate and saves the day. The charater development is excellent, the cinematopgraphy is cutting edge and the acting is great from everyone, including the extras. Although you know how the movie will end the trip there is full of unexpected twist. Even after seeing this movie numerous times I still get excited, all over again, at some of the best parts of this movie. This is one of the few movies I keep watching over and over again.

Summary: Wow, this is one neat movie
Review: Based on the previews, I had no idea what the movie was about exactly. It was better than I imagined and I am a sci-fi buff. In a nutshell, without ruining it for those who haven't seen it. A computer programmer who haunts the net, feels that his reality isn't quite what it seems to be. Somehow, a strange woman becomes aware of his quest for answers. She puts him in contact with a mysterious man, who hints at an alternate reality and nothing he has every dreamed of. However, his choice at revealing that alternate reality has no ability to return to the reality he knows. He must make a choice. In the meantime, a group of mysterious men, accost him at work and question what he knows of the mysterious man and women. The inquistion gets pretty scary. Needless to say Keanu Reeves character, opts to find out what this alternative reality is. Then it gets really cool. Maybe I missed this in many of the sci-fi movies I've seen, but this is an angle about reality that I never imagined. It must've taken this generation of writers to imagine what virtual reality could do to come up with that. It really stretches the imagination. Puts a new twist on the energizer bunny. I thought the special effects were great. Mind you a bit on the violent side, but that does sell with this generation. I appreciate the fact that it was not gory, just mostly destructive. Keanu Reeves was perfect for this role. He had the look and style to pull it off. It is nice when a person that was a young star matures into his roles and changes with his own seasons. I know some of the guys were dissappointed that there was a love story plopped in the middle of it, but I think that's what makes it even more interesting. You can't beat the big screen for this type of action flick. However, I bought the tape just to watch it every now and then for it's fabulous special effects. It is easy to see new things in it each time. It it over the top? You betcha, but quite frankly, if it wasn't, it wouldn't be science fiction. Does it have some holes in it's theories? yup. But, let's face it, the Einstein's out there that tear it apart aren't writing anything better or as interesting. Can you imagine describing to Aristotle, how a microwave works?

Summary: A great authoring job, for a great film
Review: Basically, I am big fan of The Matrix. Apparently, someone liked it at Warner Brothers, as they put a huge amount of effort into the authoring and presentation of the DVD. It is loaded with commentaries, and documentaries, and multiple scenes; all sorts of things. Did I mention the red pill/white rabbit sightings? This totally worth adding to your collection.

Summary: A movie can be fun without being "mind-blowing"
Review: BEFORE I SAY ANYTHING ELSE: I LIKED THIS MOVIE A LOT. "The Matrix" follows a young computer programmer named Thomas Anderson (Keanu Reeves). He is searching for something in his life, although he does not know what. He is contacted by a mysterious man named Morpheus (Lawrence Fishburne) who tells him that the world is not exactly what it seems to be... Honestly, people. I'm ashamed. Half of the reviews here praise this movie for being "revolutionary," "mind-blowing," and "visionary." Yeah, it's a good movie (though Keanu needs to go to acting school), but ITS JUST A FUN ACTION MOVIE WITH SOME COOL IDEAS. You must consider, though, (although I have not seen much of the other stuff that people say it borrows from) that the idea is not exactly original. Even if it is, I don't see how it is "mind-blowing." It sure didn't change the way I think. The other half of the reviews keep on saying that the plot had holes, the acting was awful, and the FX were overrated. First of all, the FX were awesome. Second, yeah, Keanu can't act, yeah, the lines were cliched, but nobody was expecting Lawrence Olivier or Shakespeare anyway. Finally, the plot may be full of holes, but can't you just stop being the nitpickers you are (I'm one too) and just try to let yourself have fun with this somewhat intelligent action movie? P.S. I wish the DVD had a better commentary. Although Carrie-Ann and the Editor come in great, the director sounds like he was a hundred feet from the microphone. Can't hear a word that he says.
