Summary: I would give it 0 stars, but the ratings only go to 1
Review: Superman IV is vile and detestable; the filmmaker's folly is 100% earnest in its dreadfulness.

1. Superman IV is an aggressively ugly film: from the belligerently hateful production design to the insistently moronic scripting, from every poorly framed shot to every shoddy set, from every inadequately costumed actor to every two-bit location, this film SCREAMS "low-budget disaster."

2. The filmmakers really slathered on the pretentiousness when it came to "the message" of the film. Remember, they subtitled it "The Quest for Peace." Subtle.

3. They made new powers for Superman out of whole cloth: when, exactly, did Superman gain the "stare-real-hard-at-the-Great-Wall-of-China-and-it-rebuilds-itself" power?

4. Two words: Jon Cryer. One word: why?

5. They filmmakers obviously used a weedwhacker to edit the film. The narrative makes no sense whatsoever.

6. Nuclear Man. Nuclear Man, Nuclear Man, Nuclear Man! Waugh!

7. Reeve refused to get in shape for the role, so Superman Fat makes his somewhat less than stellar debut.

Cynical and insufferable, Superman IV is an act of unbridled hatred palmed off on an unsuspecting public. Avoid this "film" at all costs.

Summary: Superman IV: The Quest for Quality
Review: The quest for quality should be the title of this mediocre sequel. It's straight out of a bad comic book plot and belongs in the bargain bin at your local video store. It's sad that the franchise has not learned it's lesson from their last failure, Superman 3. Instead of producing a human and believable picture, the film shoots strictly for the kiddies with the lamest villain yet- Nuclear Man (don't even ask about Lex Luther's nephew and his reject knight rider car). The film would be a total washout if not for the heartfelt performances of the series' veterans including Christopher Reeve, Margot Kidder, and Gene Hackman (as the diabolical Lex Luther). Their noble effort can't save this horribly contrived film. It's sad that this is the last Christopher Reeve/Superman movie that we will see.

Summary: Superman loses some of his velocity
Review: "Superman 4 - The Quest for Peace" is without a doubt my least favorite of the four Superman movies. This last time around, Superman (Christopher Reeve) has a plan to put an end to nuclear war altogether by getting rid of all the world's nuclear weapons. But it won't be as easy as the Man of Steel makes it sound because Lex Luthor (Gene Hackman) has his own plan of making and selling nuclear weapons in order to get rich. And on top of that, Lex Luthor has made a new being that just might give Superman a challenge as to who's the strongest. This new being gets his power from the sun and is called Nuclear Man.

In "Superman 4 - The Quest for Peace," Superman does do some terrific feats such as rescue the Statue of Liberty, rescue an astronaut in outer space, and even visit the USA flag on the moon, but it's just not the same Superman. "Superman 4 - The Quest for Peace" has the worst special effects and also the worst plot of any of the Superman movies. The excitement and sense of wonder that were in the previous 3 movies just isn't here in this movie.

"Superman 4 - The Quest for Peace" is an alright movie, but not great by any means. I recommend anybody who likes the other Superman movies to rent this one, but I wouldn't recommend buying it unless you're a Superman fanatic and you absolutely have to have it.

Summary: The best!
Review: This movie is the best in the series.Superman does ecsacly what he should do and Christopher Reeve looks much better like superman in this film.

BTW,did you know that there has been cut over 40min from this film? There is actully two nuclearmen.First,Lex Luthor creates the first nucman(wich you don't get to see in this version),but superman defeats him by throwing him into some electrisity. It's actully very easy to see that where where two nuclearmen, because in the scene when the second nuclearman meets lex Luthor for the first time,Lenny says:"Uncle lex,he's like".He was supposed to say:"Uncle lex,he's like changed".Does this make sense?

Summary: Lets look at this film in a different light
Review: Sure, Superman IV didn't have the best storyline, sure the special effects were not as good as the first 3, sure Lacy was not supposed to breathe in outer space, sure it cant possibly be daylight all over the world at once, sure Nuclear Man was not intelligent but at the end of the day we must realise that this is NOT an intense murder mystery . Superman is a fantasy film and Superman IV is targeted at kids rather than adults. Unlike Superman 3 atleast this film had heart, it had a magnificient performance from Christopher Reeve, Gene Hackman and Margot Kidder. Nobody in their right mind can say that these stars didn't give it their best .They did. About Mark Pillow, did anyone here ever think that maybe he was not supposed to be intelligent according to the script, he was supposed to be a barbaric nuclear man and he looked perfect for the role.

Who cares about the special effects. Some of them were nice examples When Superman saves austronaut from Space, When Superman stops the speeding train , Moon Battle , Superman flying down to address the crowd at the end of the film.

I really cant imagine why people say this is the worst film ever made. It cant be because it had a great cast and the special effects are still better than say Puma-Man's special effects.

The plot was good. Actually very good since it carried a peace message. The 134 minute version contains all the scenes that fit into this heavily edited movie and I have seen pictures from the 134 minute version and they're good.

So try not to be so harsh on this film. I give it 5 stars only because it had a great cast, a good world peace message and a most sincere performance from Christopher Reeve and Gene HAckman.

People who dislike this film should consider the fact that this film was only given a $15 million budget unlike the poor Superman 3 which had a $35 million budget and the first 2 had even higher budgets.

So its because of the budget that the special effects are not good, dont blame the film, blame Cannon.

Summary: "Superman Dies?"
Review: The hardest part of making a Superman movie today is finding someone to play Superman. You can't just put Nicholas Cage in a Superman suit and expect audiences to believe he can fly, because when Christopher Reeve was cast to play Superman for Superman:The Movie," and then returned for "Superman II" and "Superman III," he set a very high standard, not just for his acting, but for the appearance of Superman. Tim Burton may have been able to hide Michael Keaton behind a mask and make him Batman, but an actor playing Superman has no such luxury. An actor who plays Superman has to be tall, extremely goodlooking, and radiate health and strength. And just as Christopher Reeve always succeeded at that better than anybody before or after in the first 3 movies, the irony in "Superman IV" is that Reeve for the first time doesn't look the part, and once that's obvious, the movie dies.

In this last Superman movie, Gene Hackman is as deliciously evil as ever as Superman's nemesis--mad scientist Lex Luthor--and is up to his old tricks again. This time Luthor is trying to beat Superman with Nuclear Man, a villain created from the stolen DNA of Superman, and who he hopes will prove a match for the Man of Steel.

But Reeve looks pale and weak in this movie, and is wearing a hairpiece that prevents him from being photographed in any closeups, and so we lose the intimacy with Clark/Superman of the other 3 Superman movies that always made Reeve's portrayals so special. Reeve no longer looks like Superman, but just another actor. In fact, the only time we get a good look at Reeve is in a death scene, where Clark Kent/Superman barely manages to survive.

This movie isn't as bad as Superman III, but it was obviously past time for Christopher Reeve to hang up the cape, because even though the movie has a happy ending, Superman:The Series Of Movies, dies.

Summary: Weakest Superman Movie(but I didn't altogether hate it)
Review: I loved the first two Superman movies, and the third one was average.Superman IV has to rank right below the third one.It was good,as always,to see Christopher Reeve in the title role, and good to see Gene Hackman back as Lex Luthor.(although his part wasn't written very well)It was also good to see Margot Kidder back as Lois Lane(after only having a small part in the third movie),but her character just didn't seem as intelligent as in the first two movies. The character of Lacy Warfield(played by Mariel Hemingway) was somewhat of a waste .(she looks really good, but doesn't serve a lot of purpose,I don't think)As far as Nuclear Man goes as a villain,he is bad(not in a good way either),and doesn't even compare to the three villains from Krypton in the second movie,or Lex Luthor himself, for that matter. As for the plot(nuclear disarmament)it was interesting, but could have been a lot more so.The writing wasn't all that good, either. The special effects weren't up to par with the other Superman movies(or very many other movies for that matter). The musical score was very good,it was great to see John Williams' name in the opening credits again.Overall, while I didn't hate this movie,I sure didn't love it either.I would, however, love to see the 134 minute version I keep reading about, that might be a lot better.(or maybe not)

Summary: Brialliant? I hardly think so!
Review: To the guy who gave this movie 5 stars and said it was "Brilliant": Get a clue when a person makes a mistake. It's not Lucy, it's Lacy but that doesn't make the movie any better. This movie was terrible and I have to agree with the guy from Sacramento that this movie swallowed big time! There's so much inconsistancy and obvious, predictable scenes in this movie. It was over before it began!

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: Brilliant, simply brilliant
Review: First of all to that guy from Sacramento California, USA ,it doesn't look like you've seen Superman IV because there no person named " Lucy " in it. I've watched it a million times over and over and theres no "Lucy". Secondly you do not make sense when you say they used unused orignal footage from the earlier film in Superman true. In all of Reeves and HAckmans scenes they look the same so please dont make statements that haven't been researched. Lois is known to open up to Clark about Superman dont u know ???

Rating: 3 stars
Summary: A Definite Improvement Over the Last One
Review: To say the very least, I injoyed this film a lot more than I did Superman III. But still, it was no where near as close as the first two. It was enjoyable to see Gene Hackman reprise his role as Lex Luthor, and see Lois Lane become a dominate character again. And it's always been worth while to see Christopher Reeve's performance as Superman/Clark Kent. But the film rips off too much stuff from the first two Superman movies. And the special effects are out dated to say the least. One also has to wonder why they jumbled all the plot twists into this one story. But anyone who still loves Superman will probably like this film, which does mean well.
