Summary: Complete & Satisfying
Review: George Lucas produced something other than Star Wars? The younger crowd may not be aware of this, but anyone like me growing up in the 70's -80's would. The answer: Absolutely! (We can forget & forgive his mid-80's mistake "Howard the Duck.")

This collaborative effort from Steven Spielberg & George Lucas brought new life into the action genre. It is equally important to remember that the films also propelled Harrison Ford from Star Wars's loveable "scoundrel" to a silver screen staple. Here is my take on the series so far (barring Indiana Jones 4 which is on & off...hopefully off due to Ford's age and the closure in "Last Crusade.")

Raiders of the Lost Ark:
From the intro Paramount logo shifting into a real mountain, to the mishaps in recovering the golden idol from the temple, "Raiders" pretty much set a tone for what was to come -action. What it brought in after the opening sequence is something not often seen in action movies -story. Not just story, mind you, but intelligent story (dispelling the myth that audiences are stupid.) It is an awkward sight to see Jones transformed from the adventurer to the lecturer, until he is told of The Ark of the Covenant -supposedly holding The Ten Commandments and a source of ultimate power -and chases after it. The rest & former are long embedded in film history. The Nazi's are after it as well and Jones has the fight of his life.

Interesting points:
The beautiful Karen Allen (Starman) portrays Marion (who I personally would like to have seen resurface in later films) and the rolling boulder (reminiscent of the asteroid thundering through a starship in 1979's B-movie "The Black Hole.")

Indiana Jones & the Temple of Doom:
For me, this was the oddball movie. Jones saves child-slaves from an evil cult. That's about as well as I can sum it up. It fails its predecessor and succumbs to mediocre "sequel fever." I don't expect everyone to share my view, nor do I want you to. All-in-all, it's a high action flick and will pass some time well, even with the miscast future Mrs. Spielberg -Kate Capshaw (Space Camp).

Interesting points:
The chase through the mine is an exciting thrill-ride and the tension of bridge scene afterwards makes up for the lower points of this movie.

Indiana Jones & the Last Crusade:
To place this movie alongside the first would be justice served. Here is the return of the intelligent story and type of action/drama mix that resurged the Jones Saga. It opens with young Indiana Jones (River Phoenix, "The Mosquito Coast") stealing a lost artifact from a band of robbers. Ultimately, he is too young to thwart them; however it reveals the character of Jones from an early age and introduces his father, Henry (Sean Connery). Now, fast forward to the Jones we have come to know and Jones is trying to find his father who went searching for the Holy Grail. The movie is a whirlwind trip through Biblical History and pure adrenaline pumped action. The chemistry between Ford & Connery shines throughout the exotic locations and explosions providing comic relief as much as back-story. I can't say enough about this film, so I will stop here.

Interesting points:
So much is revealed in this movie, from the origin of the name "Indiana," to the deepest parts of each character (something rarely seen in films -character depth.)

DVD Extras:
Fortunate enough to have seen it (and I admit I'm not that much of a fan of these DVD revelations on the making's of the movie because it oftentimes destroys the fantasy of it all) I have to bend and tell you it is worth it. The original trailers are laughable (they weren't at the time the movie came out and I mean that in no disrespectful way) and a trip down Nostalgia Lane. One thing that sets this apart is that the documentary is not boring. Most are in DVD Extra-discs (probably because new movies have no real history -save maybe for The Matrix.)

Final Note:
For the cost, quality (remastered, et al.,) this is one box set that I am happy to comment on and also, one that I believe was done right and released right. (Check out other trilogy box-sets, which I won't name here, and you'll find so many versions and "Director's Cuts" that you'll be baffled at what to buy. This set is complete...plain & simple. Enjoy

Summary: Let The Adventure Begin
Review: A tale of heroes and adventure finally on DVD. Indiana Jones was created by Steven Spielberg and George Lucas. It is an homage to the great cliff hangers of early cinema. Many scenes from these films come right out of Dick Tracey and other serials.
Harrison Ford plays Dr. Jones an archeologist and adventurer who seeks to place precious relics in museum hands and out of the reach of scoundrels who use the antiquities for their own gains, and in the Nazis case their own agenda. To find out more about the film and why it is such a great adventure and a classic series I suggest viewing this set.
I carry very fond memories of this series and I have enjoyed all the adventures of Indiana Jones. The box comes with 4 disc. The picture is sharp and the sound is in THX for those who have a certified system. The menus are nice here too and feature changing picture clips and music from the film. One of the drawbacks of this set for me however was the absence of a director commentary on each disc and there are no German subtitles nor German language options. Those of you who have seen this series know that two of the three films featured the use of sparse German dialog and it would be nice to read what was said. The extra features have been saved to the fourth disc which includes a making of and other behind the scenes you would come to expect. I would however liked to have seen more from Lucas and Spielberg about their films and get some answers on what we can expect to see in the next film. Over all I was very pleased with the box set and look forward to seeing the Lucas Star Wars Trilogy come to DVD in a similar fashion.

Summary: Indy=Classic
Review: There really is no way you can go wrong with the Indiana Jones series. It has everything you would ever need in a film- Action, mystery, thrills, chills, spills, a little romance. Basically it's pure Cinema fun.
There's not much more to it than that. The Indy films don't need any explanation and the DVD should be a essential part of anyone's collection. Of course if you don't love movies, than you won't love Indy...

Summary: I have to protest!
Review: Raiders of the Lost Ark is a true classic, a great movie in every way, worth watching again and again. I can't say enough in praise of it; Spielberg, Lucas and Ford have the magic touch. I saw it 20 times in the theater when it came out, many more times on video and love it to this day. It gets 5 stars in my book. But I have to protest the decision to force me to buy 2 inferior sequels in order to get Raiders. I can't stand Temple of Doom - the whiny woman who is no match for tough minded Marion, the annoying kid, the sordid not-so-fun slave scenes - clearly Lucas and Spielberg lost the perfect touch and their senses of humor on this dreary movie. The Last Crusade is a pretty good movie and a return to form, with a tougher and not whiny female co-star, no kid, funny scenes with Sean Connery and even if it is an imitation of Raiders, I can't complain, it's fun and so much better than Temple of Doom. I don't want Temple of Doom to sit on my shelf, and I suspect they know a lot of people feel that way, which is why they are forcing us to buy all 3 and won't sell them separately. I'll take my time in deciding to get this; right now I am so unhappy with being forced to get a boxed set that I'm not going to get this. I just know that the same greed that is driving a box set will eventually lead to the movies coming out separately. So I'll wait another couple of years and see if they do.

Summary: This IS the return of the Great Adventure...
Review: Indiana Jones. The name conjures up exotic locals, mystical objects, and edge of your seat excitement. No other movie series other than Star Wars has been wanted by the fans on DVD. Well, the wait is FINALLY over. Yes, they're packaged together, but with a solid disc of 4 hours of extras, you get 10 hours of entertainment! Raiders set the standard. Temple was the roller coaster ride of fun. Crusade was the icing on the cake. Temple of Doom always gets bad reviews which is sad. It has some of the best "Indy" scenes of the 3.... the Elephants, the Rope Bridge, the Card game with Short Round....
Enjoy all of them as the Popcorn movies they were intended to be! Enjoy!

Summary: Desperately Seeking Indy
Review: Based on Movie and TV serials from the 1930s-50s these films are made with love and imagination. Anytime you put Steven Spielberg and George Lucas together on a project you can expect great things. Add the music of John Williams and the wonderful cast including Harrison Ford and you have three magical movies. To me these and the original Star Wars became instant family classics.

This DVD set is INCREDIBLE. The making of documentaries are fascintating. Little tidbits of additional information like the R2D2 and C3PO hieroglyphs, the glass separating the cobras from the actors, and Harrison Ford hurting himself being ran over by the plane in Raiders makes it very special. The stars, directors, and others that help make the movies tell about how it all came together in a fascinating story. Thats just the making of extras, I can't begin to list everything else. And by the way the picture and sound quality of the DVDs is incredibly sharp and clear.

When I first viewed the first Indiana Jones movie I was captivated. I couldn't wait to see the live cast Indiana Jones show at DisneyWorld. It was incredible with all the stunts and even a plane and the fight scene with the German as the plane rotates with propellers threatening just like the movie.

The Adventures of Indiana Jones set will gather little dust on anyones shelf. The whole family and visiting friends will get hours of entertainment out of them. With all the additional features this set offers it will take either some intense non-stop marathon viewing for a day or several partial days of fun.

Raiders of the Lost Ark broke the mold of adventure movies as Star Wars did for SciFi movies. There had not been anything like the scope it offered and there has not been since. We all have other movies we enjoy in the same genre, but most would agree that this Trilogy offers the best of all others.

It is like taking a dash of Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman in Casablanca, a sprinkle of Steve McQueen in Great Escape, and a couple of cups of all the wonderful adventure movies of the past and baking the best apple pie movie you have ever tasted with your eyes and ears.

I pre-ordered my set as soon as they were advertised and my wife and I are practically drooling in anticipation. Look around at prices of sets of movies and you will see this is by far the best set for the money even without all the wonderful extras they are including. Not sure what a family member, friend, or even your boss might like for Christmas? Buy this set for them and you will be remembered warmly forever.

Summary: FINALLY, INDY'S BACK (ON DVD)
Review: After a very, very, very long wait, Indiana Jones (Harrison Ford), that most beloved action adventure movie hero, finally arrives in a four disc collection, THE ADVENTURES OF INDIANA JONES (Paramount). This eagerly anticipated set offers more than 10 hours of entertainment and includes over three hours of extras you'll actually want to watch.

In may of 1977 George Lucas and Steven Spielberg joined forces to create a daring hero that danced between the sacred and profane, the natural and supernatural. The adventures of the intrepid archeologist from the 1930s tapped into a mythological, universal mind-set that is as old as Gilgamesh and Homer and effectively changed the cinematic landscape forever.

In RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK, Indy battles Hitler's attempt to hijack the Ark of the Covenant to not only create an invincible army but also prove himself to be the return of the true messiah. One of the all time great movie plots works on every level of story-telling and film-making.

THE TEMPLE OF DOOM is a much darker tale that Lucas blamed on a bad mood because of his divorce. In the wilds of India, Jones fights an evil Thugee cult that's enslaved children in a fortress-like mine.

The Christian promise of eternal life is at the heart of THE LAST CRUSADE as Indy and his father (Sean Connery) -- the world's leading authority on the legendary Cup of Christ -- fight the Nazis and their attempt to seize the Holy Grail.

The Bonus Material disc features new documentaries made exclusively for this DVD collection. Expanded "making of" features track Indy's three adventures from concept through production. Four all-new featurettes focus on sound, music, special effects and stunts. Also included are the original teasers and trailers of all three titles. The bonus disc enables exclusive access to the Indiana Jones DVD web site.

Restored frame-by-frame by Lowry Digital Images, the films have been remastered by THX and boast a new Dolby Digital immersive 5.1 soundtrack. The set is available in either widescreen or full-screen format. Highest recommendation.
