Summary: nice 1/2 movie
Review: Great book, average movie only because in reading a book the pace is up to you...
For a three hour movie relatively nothing happens during the first 90 min.! Fine that it follows the book, but a great book doesn't always make for a great movie. Although the movie was made fantastically, there is very little character development and, more importantly for me, very few of my emotions were titilated except for a little fear and anticipation by the 2 hour mark.
Sorry, but Harry Potter translates (or is made) better into a movie than this one- the HP 3 hour roller coaster was by far more exhillerating than this 3 hour 'argonaut' version.

Review: Great cinemaphotography, lush scenery, and great action scenes cannot and do not make up for the grevious deviations from the fundamentals of the story, plot and especially characterization. One reviewer noted that Peter Jackson did not show slavish devotion to the text and that is certainly true and understably so when taking such an epic and putting it onscreen, however at least trying to be somewhat true to the text would have been appreciated. Would it have killed the director to make the Council of Elrond a little more true and cerebral rather than a first grade shouting match. Aragorn is not the tortured soul in exile Jackson supposes him to be and what is the problem with him carrying the shards of Narsil? And the ridiculous stunts Saruman gets up to....words defy me and what was Galadriel on? And Arwen, a playful elf? Please! I agree that by movie making standards it is a great movie. I am pleased that it did not win best picture however, because although Peter Jackson has come closer than anyone else in putting Tolkien's epic on-screen he should have paid a bit more attention to the text, especially when it came to characterization, but then again getting characters right has never been his strong point.

Review: Great DVD! For hard core fans you will notice small changes in the story line, but that's to be expected! The cinematography is nothing short of gorgeous and I enjoyed the special features. The characters are well developed and consistent with the books. For those not familiar with the epic tale, be warned that this is only 1/3 of the story! But take heart, the producers and directors shot all the film for the final two parts over a two year period and the second installment is due out this winter. If you enjoy fantasy (elves, wizards, etc.) I recomend you purchase the books (boxed set). Remember, this is mythology with all the good and bad that that implies.

Summary: Great DVD set, but why is there no Full Screen Version
Review: Great DVD. Loved the extra scenes. However a full screen version would have made people with smaller TV sets a lot happier.

Summary: Great Movie - even if Eurocentric/lacking racial diversity
Review: Great Movie based on an enjoyable series of books.
Loved the Movie. Obviously lots of work and effort went into it.
Disappointed that in a diverse fantasy world they couldn't have any of the races with black/brown or 'yellow' complected people.
They could cut verbiage and do all sorts of things but wanted to remain true to the racial characteristics interpreted.

Go see it! too short for me - wanted to see longer version.

Hopefully dvd will include longer footage and next movie will have more racial diversity and musical diversity... not totally Gaelic sounding music.

Summary: Ultimate Edition??
Review: Great movie, great first DVD, great second DVD, but I'm just wondering why all the wonderful special features from the first version of the DVD release are not on this one????? No Enya video, no sneak peak of the game, or of the next movie... There are a few things that should've been on this 4 disc set. You can't say that there wasn't enough room on the discs. No need to make 5 discs, just add them to the two special features DVDs. Oh well, guess i'm asking for too much.

Summary: Clearly one of the most overrated movies of our generation
Review: Great respect for Jackson for undertaking this but lets face it, this movie lacks an editor and is prone to long, agonizingly boring spurts. Same goes for the rest in the trilogy as well.
