Review: If this is what the first 3 movies are going to look like, then I hope Lucasfilm is busy working on them. Clarity is outstanding. Better than the theatre version in that you can jump over the slow scenes.

Review: If you appreciate the StarWars saga and want to see these films on DVD, then make your voice heard. The DVD is/was purposely held back for this film as well as all the other StarWars movies. Why? Greed. Instead of making this film available on DVD like hundreds of thousands of other films, those of us with DVD players are being manipulated into buying BOTH the VHS and DVD versions (assuming a DVD does inevitably come to market). LucasFilm is also paranoid about illegal duplication and is making YOU AND I pay for their paranoia. I can think of no better candidate for beautiful digital reproduction than this film, and it's unlikely any of us will be able to view all that glory for quite some time - if ever.Shame on you George Lucas. I will not buy this film on VHS, and if you have any sense of community and own a DVD player you can only make your voice heard by following suit. Look at all the films we are NOT seeing on DVD because those of you could be "voting" for what you want are staying away from the polls. I have purchased many many DVDs from Amazon. They are kind enough to keep a list of everyone who asks to be notified if/when a film makes it to DVD. They have even stated they will send a count (pettition) to the studios withholding DVD versions, as evidence of demand. I for one would NEVER have shelled out all this money for VHS titles, simply because the shelf-life of VHS is as limited as the sound and video quality. DO NOT BUY THIS FILM ON VHS IF YOU OWN A DVD PLAYER.

Summary: Great DVD, Lots of Easter Eggs
Review: If you are a fequent patron of the "DVD" Easter Egg web sites, this disc will amuse and entertain. Plus, it's the only DVD I own that has true interactivity in your computer - it has a "special" web site attached to it that for a while, was exclusive in content to DVD owners... a great idea by the LucasCronies.

Review: If you are a Star Wars fan this is DVD is a must. Episode I may not have lived up to the hype for some people, but you have to remember that the hype for Episode I was huge. A great fun adventure movie, but an incredible DVD. The special features DVD is worth purchasing alone. Lucas really gives you a treat with the deleted scences. The making of the film is also really worth watching more than once.

Summary: Star Wars is Back!!!
Review: If you are a Star Wars fan, then you know that this is the first Star Wars movie to be released on DVD, which is a big deal. The movie is just ok, George Lucas seems to be a little bit rusty after a long hiatus of adding to the Star Wars universe. This is the first Star Wars movie, and introduces many of the character that millions have come to know and love such as C3-PO and R2-D2. The film follows the early childhood of Anakin Skywalker, the soon to be Darth Vader that we see in the original three films. The story moves along at a medium pace and includes all the usually Lucas fanfare of special effects and aliens. The pod racing scene is especially memorable. For anyone that liked the original Star Wars films than this movie will be enjoyable. It's key in understanding much of the Star Wars universe. A good film to say the least!

Summary: NEAT EFFECTS! Choppy-weak story. Still Worth It.
Review: If you are familiar with the first 3, this one lacks a compelling story, and fails to maintain any suspense. [We already know what will happen with most of the characters--we've already been told the ending in the 1st 3 films. None of the rest of the Star Wars series yet to be made will be able to maintain much suspense either, for the same reason.] Still, as an exercise in Star Wars stuff, it is moderately entertaining, and the special effects are really neat. Chaulk one up for ever improving computer technology. However, the effects may lose something in the translation to the smaller TV screen. The letterbox edition should be better than the cropped version.

Summary: I don't care what universe you're from, that's gotta hurt!
Review: If you are judging this movie based on all the other movies out there, this is definitely near the top of the heap. However, Star Wars films will always be judged by a higher standard. "The Phantom Menace" doesn't quite make it up to the level of the first three. This isn't just nostalgia for the old films that's causing me to say this. All in all, "Phantom Menace" was just a bit weaker than the others. For example, the characters weren't quirky enough for you to really get to love them. The two Jedi's were both quite serious, the queen wasn't all that interesting, and the bad guys really didn't terrify me the same way Darth Vader could. There needed to be someone like Han to liven things up (though I do have to say that Anakin was a strength of this movie). I know that was supposed to be JarJar's role, but please...I couldn't laugh at him because he got so annoying by the middle of the movie. Add that to the fact that it was very difficult to understand him, and one wonders if Lucas is having any second thoughts about the huge role JarJar got. However, much so ink has already been spilled about JarJar that I won't belabor the point. The big battle scene at the end kept reminding me of the strikingly similar scene in "Jedi." The feeling of dejavu was so strong that it left me wondering if the writers could have made this one a little fresher. All that said, the special effects and animation was excellent. The plot, while not too deep, kept me interested. Overall it's not a bad movie, but Star Wars fans are hoping for something a little better with Episode II.

Summary: Lucas does it again!
Review: If you are looking for a movie filled with drugs, violence, sex, foul language or the break down of the american family then you need to keep looking, but if a movie where the clash good & evil is an every day occurance and the fate of the galaxy hangs in the balance as one young boy learns of his true potential then this video is for you. Lucas has outdone himself with just the right mixture of action, intrigue, special effects, music, and character development as well as setting the stage for the events to come. I found myself looking for every possible plot twist or hidden meaning that was expounded upon or left us hanging (Was Darth Vader really Luke's father?). Though critics may scoff and belittle this movie, I for one feel it was worth the wait. No I didn't stand in line 3 weeks, but did catch it the first day it opened nationally. Most of us realize movies are simply a form of entertainment that allow us a moment of reprieve from our otherwise hectic lives. I admit Jar Jar may not be my farvorite, but my young son perks right up everytime he's on. To each his own.

Summary: The greatest Saga begins
Review: If you are not a true Star Wars fan (not the freaks that dress up) you might have a hard time understanding the meaning behind this movie. Episode I gives great background to help build a strong foundation for the up coming movies. The quality of this DVD is well...a DVD. But the extras are what makes this DVD stand out of the crowd. The documentary of the deleted scenes and the making could be a stand alone title. I would recommend that non-Star Wars fans watch the original trilogy again, then come back and watch Episode I. You will then relieze the importance of this movie in the great Star Wars Saga. I still feel that Lucas should have release the original movies before this one.
