Summary: Cinematic art...
Review: The 1st part in the beatiful Rocky series is perhaps the best. Starring Sylvester Stallone as Rocky Balboa and Talia Shire(The Godfather parts I-III) as his girlfriend Adrian. The movie was loved by everybody. It recieved three Academy awards for best picture best director John G Avildsen and best editing. It spawned four blockbuster sequals from 1979 until 1990. Stallone,Shire and Burt Young starred in all five movies. Carl Weathers who played Apollo Creed in 4 of them. Burgess Meredith's carachter Mickey died in Rocky III but came back in Balboa's mind in the fifth movie. The movie's about a underdog fighter from Philadelphia who all of a sudden gets a shot at the heavyweight title with Apollo Creed after the real challenger suffered from an broken hand. Rocky trains really hard for 5 weeks and goes the distance with Creed, thats something that no one has ever done before. I am a true fanatic of the Rockymovies and I love all of them for it's feeling. The acting in this movie is superb. Stallone,Shire,Young and Meredith all got a Academy award nomination each. It's too bad they didn't win!
I have also written a review for Rocky IV.

Summary: I know I wasn't just another bum from the neiborhood.
Review: Years after seeing this movie, the above line just popped up to my consciousness. It may be the most significant - meaningful line of the entire film. It reminds me to keep on trying no matter what-any other choice could bring me to wind up a no man or a street bum. It is what this film is all about: A man's struggle to achieve something very hard he would be proud of in his life, or in the movie's words - 'going the distance'. Rocky will forever seize my imagination as an example of a man who had fought his fight and won it.

Summary: A Great Inspirational Story
Review: This Oscar-winning look at the rags-to-riches motif still holds up today. This story is parallel to Stallone's: The first film was the start of a long and profitable career, the Rocky movies got cornier and cornier (II was OK, III had Mr. T. Enough said. IV had that big Russian guy, a corny ending, and was all-around sappy. V was embarassing. Let's hope VI never gets out of the gate), just like Stallone's movies, and although both series did well at the box office, both were fading artistically and critically. But anyway, this movie is teriffic. Stallone is Rocky Balboa, Carl Weathers is his nemesis, Apollo Creed, and they must face off, because only one can be the champion. Rocky never gives up, even when the odds are a million to one, and the energy from this picture is truly incredible. As some have said, its impossible not to like, and with good reason. Worth buying, but ignore the contrived sequels.

Summary: Great entertainment
Review: A major movie of the 70's. One of the best actually. Stallone puts in a great performance as well as the supporting cast around him. Fell good and heart warming. An all time great gets a superb DVD transfer as well. I've never seen this movie look so good.

Summary: Too cute!
Review: I recentley saw this movie for the first time, and I thought it was simply wonderful. I personally thought Rocky was a sweet, touching character. Some points of this film even made me cry. The script was well written and fresh, and the characters are more like real people and not blatant actors trying too hard to be memorable. I thought this movie was simply touching, and it sends out a good moral; if you never give up, you'll never be a loser. : ) I have yet to see the sequels, but all I can say is that its Oscar was well deserved and it's one of the best films of the '70s.

Summary: 25th Anniversary Edition...Why the change in dialogue?
Review: I have an original VHS of the movie RockyI from 1986. I recently bought the 25th Anniversary edition. Having seen Rocky I over 100 times I have the dialogue almost memorized The dialogue in the 25th anniversary edition has been doctored. In the opening scene after the fight with Spider Reko in the locker room Spider Reko says "You were lucky tonight" in the original version he makes mention of Rocky's hard punches. On the dock when Rocky collects from some loser named Bob in the original Bob stutters about taping up the thumb to make it look like Rocky broke it as Rocky had been ordered to do. In the 25th anniversary edition he does not stutter and the words "No one will be the wiser " have been added. For the first part of the movie I got the impression that it was the TBS version. The rest of the movie is like the original

Summary: Original And Exhilarating.
Review: "Rocky" is one of the great classic films that stands the test of time. This is an original, entertaining and captivating movie. Instead of using large, complex brushstrokes, it makes a great story out of ordinary people. Sylvester Stallone gives a great performance as Rocky, he's not some brute tough-guy, he's just a nice guy who is suddenly given a big chance at his sport. The screenplay by Stallone is an authentic and intriguing journey into the world of boxing, and the side storylines do not interrupt the film's structure but flow along with it. There is also sweet, uplifting romance with the story of Rocky and Adrian (played by Talia Shire, sister of legendary director Francis Ford Coppola). The boxing scenes are exhilarating and exciting, especially the final boxing climax at the end. Overall, "Rocky" is an inspiring movie because it gives hope that people can get a chance at big things, that we can strive for more, and if we work hard and use our minds, we can excell. "Rocky" seems simple, but has strong things to say at its core. It is one of the great sports films, but also a great drama and romance. It is classic filmmaking done with style, focus and energy.

Summary: It speaks to us
Review: I have to say that this is one of the greatest films I have seen. It speaks to us! It's about love, passion, honor, courage, dignity, failure, old age and plain old heart wrenching hard work! The story of Rocky is universal and we have seen it many times in other films but Sylvester Stallone works an incredible magic into this movie. Incidently he was in a very similar situation as Rocky when he made this movie.

Rocky is basically a man who let the years go by and found himself a clubfighter and muscle to a loanshark at about age 30. He is basically a bum and a failure in life. No one treats him with respect because I suspect people could sense the greatness that could have been. Even Mickey the trainer sais this. The woman he loves is incredibly shy and he is going nowhere fast. The heavy weight champion of the world, Apollo Creed picks his name by chance out of a book and Rocky is picked to fight him.

I love ordinary people in extraordinary circumstances and Rocky is suddenly given an incredible chance to prove himself one last time. He knows that he can not beat Apollo but if he can only survive the fight he will know that he was not just another bum. It is really a battle of the human spirit. A battle against ourselves. The fight is incredible. The mucial score by Bill Conti is breath taking. Rocky is beaten (badly) and in the final two rounds he falls down but (ignoring his trainers pleas to stay down) he agonizingly gets to his feet. This is a moment in the film that will make your heart stir. I always tear up at this sceen. You see, Rocky had been down his whole life. This was his last chance to prove to himself that he wasn't a bum. When they are announcing that Apollo Creed is the winner it is insignificant because Rocky won the greater battle. The battle of the human spirit. The last scene of the couple hugging is a beatiful scene of friendship and love. As you can see I love Rocky.
