Summary: One for the ages!
Review: I have always been an unabashed fan of this movie, and succumbed to its humble magic yet again during the 25th anniversary tribute on TV. Rocky, looking like the holy fool from world folklore in his comical all-black ensemble and gold neck cross, clashes with the godlike Apollo and emerges as a hero in spite of the judges' decision back on earth. The other reviewers are exactly right about the story's allegorical and archetypal qualities. When people watch a movie again and again and again you can bet that it has tapped into some universal human constants. None of the reviews I read mentioned the classic Thanksgiving vignette when Adrian and Paulie have a hysterical screaming match and the turkey gets pitched out the window (and caught behind the scenes since there was no room in the low budget for another!) There is passion aplenty in this grouping, which needs only to add self-discipline, commitment, and cooperation to "go the distance" together as an interdependent unit. One of the key moments comes when Rocky's nose is broken in the big fight. Once the last vestige of pride is gone he can at last give himself completely to the impossible battle half blind like only the bravest champions can. Rocky's experiences in the ring remind me of Nikos Kazantzakis' story about a man who fought with the Devil and hoped to win, then fought with God and hoped to lose! ... Let us not forget that the main function of the hero/servant is to inspire and empower, as when Rocky brings all the neighborhood kids up with him when he again ascends the City Hall steps in ROCKY II! Rocky turned the American Dream into a timeless myth that can still be realized if the Russian and Ukrainian immigrants I work with are to be believed. This film is a treasure.

Review: An 30 year old amateur Boxer (Sylvester Stallone) becomes a pro, when he's going to fight an Pro Boxer (Carl Weathers). It's becomes Rocky Dreams, one in a life time. But he's becoming in love with an slow witted woman (Talia Shire) but also he has to deal with his aging coach (Burgess Meredith) & His abused friend (Burt Young). DVD's has fine anamorphic Widescreen (1.85:1) transfer & An fine remastered Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound. Great Performances by Stallone, Shire, Young, Weathers and Meredith. Well done direction by John G. Avilden (The Karate Kid Trilogy). Sharply written by actor:Sylvester Stallone. Watch for actor in a small role:Joe Spinell (Best Known for Starring & Co-written:The Converisal underrated slasher film-1980's Maniac). Grade:A.

Summary: See Rocky again for the first time.
Review: Rocky is a club prize figter and his career is going nowhere. Then by virture of circumstance is basically chosen out of a hat to fight heavy weight Champion of the world.... Apollo Creed Rocky caually accepts the offer. Deciding to go along with this "exhibition" Mickey, an old hard nosed ex boxer who never payed Rocky much attention offers to Manger him and "pass on fifty years of Knowlege" there is much more, but see the movie for yourself. Try to put out of your mind later Stallone movies. for example: junk like Rambo, Judge Dread, Corba etc.... Rocky is an intimate, funny, honest and poignant film.

Summary: Stallone's best work and an excellent film...
Review: I don't think the film "Rocky" is as appreciated in todays society as it is deserved to be. It's an amazing film with a fine story and some amazing characters. The film has been ridiculed and made fun as the years went on, made into a cliche', except by those who remember its purity and substance when it was first released or those movie enthusiasts who appreciate fine theatrical work. Rocky, a down and out boxer from the streets of Philadelphia, surrounded by poverty and scorn, who falls in love with a local girl and finds himself in the fight of his life against the champion of the world. Seems like such a simple premise, yet so much was happening between all it's characters, that the film never got dull or over the top.
Stallone out did himself and surprised everyone, him included, when he delivered this outstanding performance. How could you not root for this guy and feel his despair and pain as his life was happening. His supporting cast was nothing short of excellent. A great mix of very different characters. A drunk, loud, jealous brother. An extremely shy yet very loving woman. An over the top glory hungry champ. An old disgruntled and still living his dream boxing trainer. I don't think people appreciate the very real fact that it only took Stallone a few days to write this script or how he had to fight the studios to let him play the lead. How different this film would have turned out if another actor played the lead. We are more fortunate for it. Will Stallone ever play a finer role than Rocky? Probably not. He was "Rocky" in every way possible and it was amazing for him to have let us, the viewers, experience that for ourselves.

Summary: Rocky: Not Just Another Boxing Movie
Review: For many, the title "Rocky" is synonymous with a bunch of muscular, sweaty, bonehead men beating each other up. I didn't expose myself to this film for a long time because of that stereotype. After my brother talked me into watching it, I discovered immediately that the stereotype was not "Rocky"! If anything, boxing is a subplot. This is a movie about the human spirit, personal pride, and success. Rocky, who's been through hard times and will continue to go through them, represents everyone in their struggle to prove to themselves that life is worth living and that they can do anything they put their minds to. It's a great movie that keeps us cheering for Rocky Balboa as he fights his way to success and happiness with his life.

Summary: This DVD is why DVD's are so great!
Review: Recommendation: High Review: The movie was such a great hit and I loved it when it came out; but when I revisited it years later, it seemed to have some slow moments that I had forgotten. Regardless, if you are a student or fan of film, or just want some insights into how a completely unknown actor could rocket to the top of the industry you have to buy this DVD. What drives this DVD is the actor's / director's commentary by John Avildson (director), Irwin Winkler and Robert Chartoff (producers) and actors Talia Shire and Burt Young. It also has great featurettes for "behind-the-scenes" and "never-before-seen-footage", and a video commentary by Stallone as well as other features. Stallone lived "Rocky" as an actor; he took his best shot and won. (So that you don't think I am just a "Rocky fight fanatic", I confess that I have not seen 3 of the 5 Rocky movies.)

Review: Wow!! Society encourages you to relegate this movie to mere Hollywood cliche. Yet upon every viewing it is as fresh and alive as the first: I still get the goosebumps!! MAN, DO I GET THE GOOSEBUMPS!! I love the audio commentary!! It is the most tight of any DVD I have seen with so many cast and crew taking part. Each jamming their own p.o.v. into the mix. It never lags for a second. And Stallone - in only a simple face to camera video commentary - takes you thru all the twists and turns, lows and highs that made his debut forever THE DEBUT!! I feel as if I have seen the movie all over again for the very first time - as a one man show in a mere 1/2 hour!?! Along with Fred Astaire; Sylvestor Stallone is still my favouite actor!! I'd watch him in anything - barring 'The Specialist'. Subsequent to this movie Sly could have been so much more; if only he had allowed himself - to once again - to become so much less.
A very talented man who puffed himself up so much he became peceived as less than he truly was. Yet an actor - who's films in the 1980's reeked of Ameican Plastic - can still inspire and send gooey shivers down another man's spine with just the warmth of his voice, the sensitivity of his arguement and the childlike wonder in his eyes. If actions speak louder than words then this is a very perceptive, warm, sensitive, mentally articulate human being!! He is the only actor/person I enjoy despite the obvious false humility and controlled pretention. He is truly likeable and still overwhelmingly inspiring. A most under appreciated star, actor, writer, director, editor and all around personality!!! America do not forget Sylvestor Stallone....

Review: One of the greater films ever done.Period.It's a touching and highly emotional little movie about determination, courage and the power of love.It gives important messages and lessons in every scene, and it also made every guy believe in their dreams and wishes.Rocky deservedly won an Oscar for Best Picture and despite what film snobs tend to say, it must be one of the most special movies ever brought to screen.It's impossible not to cry with the story of a simple minded boxer who gives his best to go the distance with the champion and finnally prove something to himself: that he isn't just another bum fro the neighboor.Buy this great DVD now!
