Summary: About Time!
Review: Let me admit right at the beginning that Superman: The Movie is my all-time favorite film. That said, the release of the Superman franchise on DVD is a long-awaited gift. Here's some trivia: Richard Donner was signed by Warner Brothers to shoot the first two Superman films back-to-back. About a quarter of the way through filming part two, Marlon Brando (who was contractually bound to do the sequel) quit over a salary disagreement and Richard Donner was fired. Filming halted and did not resume until almost a year later with Richard Lester at the helm. What the DVD for Superman II is missing is Donner's footage not included in the final cut; including a different opening rescue sequence with Lois Lane being "blown" onto a fruit stand after falling out of a window.

The moon landing, fight in the diner and slivers of the final showdown over Metropolis were all Donner's footage. When Lester picked up, a few things had changed, including Christopher Reeve's physique (he got bigger) and Margot Kidder's nose! The trained eye can spot the differences in footage within actual scenes.

I would argue that while the second film packs more action, it lacks the humanity or "superhumanity" felt in Donner's original. Themes like coping with the death of a parent, growing up "different" and even being a fish out of water found in Mario Puzo's script help to pad the bells and whistles associated with a flying superhero.

The Superman sequels of the mid-late eighties, including 1984's attempt at a second franchise, Supergirl fell far short of the magic of the first 2 films. These movies were steeped in their own kitsch, never more apparent than in a scene featuring Richard Pryor wearing a pink table cloth as a cape proclaiming "Superman's bad." Let's also not forget the "I can see the strings" NON-special effects of Superman IV. By this time, the movies weren't fun anymore, they were funny...and not on purpose.

For die hard Superman fans, those able to look beyond the obvious flaws of the later films this DVD Collection is just what we've been waiting for. Others may want to stick with the first two. Either way, your imagination will be challenged...and you may even believe for a split second that a man can fly.

Summary: So where's the Supergirl DVD in the package?
Review: Four out of the five Superman films are provided in the DVD set (that's why I'm giving it four stars, not five). I'm using the term Superman in the "Superman Comics" sense and realize that the he's only referred to in spirit in the movie Supergirl but it was part of that entire Superman world (a spin-off more than a sequel). Sure Supergirl was no classic but it was no worse than parts III and IV, and it was part of the series (the same producers gave it the same over-the-top style). I guess it's the Chris Reeves factor that's driving the DVD release but I always hate box sets that are incomplete.

Summary: The Four Stars Go to Part One and Two Only!
Review: Here's the scoop, Jimmy. Finally the Man of Steel is getting what he has longly deserved: the clear picture. The first two "Superman" films are wonderful. Many believe the first sequel to be the best. I disagree. The original film is the best because it is original (which is a great achievement in and of itself) and it doesn't have a mean streak in it. The sequel sent our hero into the gloom of depression with loosing his powers and so on. It's almost enough to cry over, which could have been the point but I still don't like those scenes. The rest of the film is good, but doesn't stack up to the first over all. Then the third and forth put the viewer in the gloom of depression. The third was mean spirited and desperate. The ending chapter (for now, let's hope) felt like it was trying to make up for the third one. It tried a little too hard. All in all, the first two get the four stars while the last two get nothing, which is exactly what they add up to when considering good entertainment.

Summary: Finally--Superman gets the visual respect it deserves!!!!
Review: Superman I+II were both classic films(basically it was one long movie broken into 2 parts).III was a comedy that went bad and IV had a global message to lay down your arms. With all that said, it is about time they released these movies on DVD. This is why I got a DVD player in the first place. Ever since I saw I+II in the theatres all those years ago, nothing has come close to the clarity and sound. Every tape was grainy and the TV did not do them justice. Until now!!! We get Superman in the visual quality it was meant to be seen in. The Superman DVD seems to have a bunch of extras to keep any fan occupied for hours. Shame the other 3 do not. I can never understand why the first movie of a series always gets all the extras, and there are less and less offered to us as the series goes on. Oh well.

Kryptonite won't keep me and shouldn't keep you from purchasing this most fantastic DVD set. Hopefully Star Wars and Indiana Jones won't be too far behind!!!!

Summary: UP UP and AWAY
Review: You can't go wrong with SupermanI-IV. Nothing beats these classic movies. Sure, the first two are the best movies of the series, but you have to admit that you liked the last two too. It is about time these movies were put on DVD. Now, they can be watched they way they should, in the best quality possible. With added features these movies are some of the best ever made for people of all ages.

Summary: Good Superman 4-pack but Superman 4 needs new effects
Review: I had a look at the first Superman DVD and it has eccellent extras, such as screen tests and documentaries. The four movies make an eccellent collection....except for Superman 4.I still remember sitting in the audience and hearing the groans at the second rate special effects in Superman 4(the one exception being when he tosses the nuclear weapons into the sun). With todays CGI effects,it could and should be improved. If the Star Trek:The Motion Picture DVD can have new special effects added to improve it,then why not Superman 4? It needs new special effects desperately.

Summary: SUPERMAN - fianlly arriving on DVD (and in style!)
Review: SUPERMAN is the greatest superhero of them all! And his movies are great, too - at least the first two. SUPERMAN: THE MOVIE and SUPERMAN II are two of the finest comic adaptions ever. Even after more than twenty years Superman's battle against three kryptonian supervillains does not look cheesy or cheap. This is how superheroes fight - they throw parts of building and cars at each other. And who didn't want to have flight capability after leaving the cinema? Sadly, SUPERMAN III and IV show the decline of a series that started really great. In SUPERMAN III you'll find yourself in a cheap Richard Pryor comedy, because Pryor is the movie's co-star. He is unbelievably annoying. SUPERMAN IV is slightly better, but is very clearly aimed at a very young audience. The strange thing in this fourth movie is, that SUPES has some power that can not be seen anywhere else: He stops falling people and falling debris just with a look. Since when does SUPERMAN have telecinetic power??? Anyway, all four movies in one box is a fine thing. The 1st and the 2nd movie are like one single movie. If you don't buy this box, buy at least these two. But I wanna have all four. And finally here they are in dvd-quality.

Summary: For Superhero diehard fans
Review: This complete set of the Superman series featuring a true real life Superman in the person of Christopher Reeve is very good. Superman The Movie, the first in the set sets the tone for the rest of the series. Superman The Movie is an excellent movie but not as good as Superman II. It is rare indeed that a sequel does better than the original, this was the exeption. Superman II was funny, action packed and better all around than the original which was ana exellent movie as well.

Superman III takes a lot of flack, but I didn't see it as a b ad movie. This time they went into a comedy, slapstick design with Richrad Pryor playing a bumlbing computer geek trying to make synthetic Kryponite which fails to do the job villian played by Robert Vaughn has in mind but has a strange affect on Superman. Now the man of steel has a lust for sex and could care less about saving the world. Superman III was no doubt the weakest in the series, but not as bad as some reviewers have noted.

Superman IV-The Quest for Peace, brings back the original cast in a movie directed by Reeve. This time, they also get back to the original theme of the movie and create a new rival for Superman known as Nuclear Man. This one was better than #3 but not as good as the first 2 Superman movies. Superman 3 & 4 were also better than ther last 2 Batman movies.

All in all, this is a good tape set for all diehard Superhero fans. Enjoy...........

Review: Very bad film.
They released Spiderman into the 21st century, why not Superman?
I've always found him to be the most appealing comic book character. He is sure for an amazing performance.
