Summary: For those who buy VHS
Review: Well I watched this tape (VHS) last night after it arrived from Amazon (only just released in the UK) and I can confirm that it is excellent. The quality could not be better on DVD I am convinced of that. I bought the VHS because my nephews (Who were not permitted to watch it in cinemas here) will want to see it. I have set them the task of READING THE HOBBIT first as I think this excellent introduction will make them more prepared for the movie release which can be quite frightening I think. So we shall see how they cope with THE HOBBIT and take it from there. Anyway folks...for those 10 people States Side who still buy VHS, It's absolutely excellent and of course save for the extras that so often are the selling point of the DVD medium...you are missing nothing. Cheerio.

Summary: Good visuals, but misses the mark
Review: Peter Jackson has directed a visually stunning, but empty movie. The scenery and costumes are worthy of the book, but the script is lame and the characters have no depth. Choppy editing takes viewers on a roller coaster ride, hurrying from action scene to action scene, depriving audiences of the opportunity to gradually immerse themselves into what should have been a rich fantasy.

The actors are competent but seem shallow, disposable, not unlike what has happened in recent Star Wars films. The lone exception being Sir Ian McKellen, who imbues the Gandalf character with lived-in warmth and wit.

All in all, this film is a must-see for Tolkien fans, since the story is brought to life here with lavish attention to detail. However, it is a triumph of form over substance. Let's hope that the sequels offer better character development, stronger scripts, and less frantic editing.

Summary: What movie did you watch?
Review: Now I simply loved Lord of the Rings when I saw it on Feb. 24th, a few months after it came out. It was incredibly enjoyable and spectacular. Before I had watched it, I read The Hobbit, which I also enjoyed, and I am reading The Two Towers now, which is very fun to read.

I read through the 57 5-star reviews with a few friends just to get a few laughs (and I got a lot actually) cuz people were complaining about the stupidest things. "It doesn't have DTS 5.1 sound", "Frodo's height changes", "the detail was too much", "I fell asleep", "I walked out 3 minutes into the movie" - on and on these people complain about a very good movie...

You wanna whine about the special effects? They were incredible, and they made the movie move along nicely. One review even mentioned the movie didn't have any of the songs/poems of the book. Hello? It's a three hour long movie. They aren't going to throw in some song so we can watch a guy sing for 10 minutes on the screen. You want a guy running around in a costume the same size as everyone else pretending to be some giant monster so you can say it's not only good cuz of the special effects?

Please, you have nothing to use against this movie. It is superb. While it isn't one of my favorites (Braveheart and Waterworld are), I enjoyed it immensely. You think you can do better? Go grab a video-recorder, find some cliff with a river, pick up some buddies of yers, sit around and read the book to each other, and make sure you catch every line on tape so you can say you made the movie how it should have been, so it 'follows' along correctly.

Summary: Timeless and Universal
Review: So many other reviewers have addressed the plot and course of the film, I thought I would concentrate on some of the more human elements. Mr. Jackson has captured the ageless themes of humanity in the Lord of the Rings in a way that has taken my breath away. I've read the trilogy many times in over 20 years, and this has driven me back to it, not to complain, but to compare and to contemplate. Anything that helps us to think about things like honor, and loyalty, and love, and courage, especially in these dark times, is worth whatever time it takes. Mr. Jackson has managed to create a world that is as real as our own for the time we are there, and given us images of truth. Anyone who has suffered a calamitous loss will recognize himself in Aragorn's reaction to Gandalf's fall--time slows, sounds fade, things become surreal. It is so clear that the delightful, free, innocent life of Hobbiton is worth risking exile and death to preserve. And frankly, I hope to die as Boromir did--absolved by the one with the power in my life to do so, aware of my failings but free of them at last, and at peace.
Something that will draw people out of themselves, help them see the best in humanity and give them a desire to preserve it, and give them a brilliant entertainment as well (the best swordfights I ever expect to see) is worth owning, worth watching again and again, and well worth sharing with any children in one's life. It was impossible for me to watch this film and not think of the hatred that was behind the September 11 attacks, especially in Boromir's description of Mordor--"There is evil there that does not sleep." There is so much we can learn from Tolkien's vision of Middle Earth, about what it means to be truly human, about what hate and evil and a desire for power and control can lead to. The books are certainly well known, but the films will make his vision truly worldwide.

Summary: Great artwork.....lacking dramatic feel
Review: I must admit that the ambience and the artwork involved in this movie is very fine indeed. I was quite convinced of the various sets and locations that they work conherently to present the narrative more real and believable. What I find rather lacking is the dramatic feel and force of the book. Take the bridge scene in the mine of Moria, for instance. In the book, the excitement builds up to the final showdown on the bridge. Here, it's another Hollywood hanging-from-the-edge-of-whatever scene that took away most of the gusto from the final scene. The departure of Boromir also went completely astray from the book, and I much prefer the way the novel presents the scene. Well, you can't make them all happy, and I commend the staff for great work they have put in. But I won't be buying this DVD. If you liked the movie in the theatre, however, you will be very pleased with this DVD. If you are a hardcore fan, then go for the extended version.

Summary: What's all the fuss about?
Review: This movie wasn't that great! It was way too long... I almost fell asleep at parts. The acting wasn't the greatest but wasn't bad! The Special Effects were pretty good, but that's not what makes a movie! I give a star for some fine performances, strong plot, and nice settings. But lose stars for mumbling at points, and overlength movie. 3 movies 3 hours long, for each, that is fregon long! I had a hard time sitting through one, imagine 3, good god! Too long for me! Maybe if you got nothing better to do for 3 hours at night, you could watch this. But if you don't, which most people don't, don't watch this! Plus, if you don't like fantasy, it's nothing special, save your money! Rent it, sure, but don't buy it! It's not bad but way over rated! Maybe when I was 10, I would have liked this, but I'm not! So, do yourself a favour and save 3 hours! It should be possible that one person wouldn't care too much about this movie!

Summary: Excellent Movie, but JRRT it ain't
Review: I'd read the books who knows how many times since I discovered them in the early '70s. I still go back to them when I get a whiff of Mordor in this world's winds. But, I knew the movie wouldn't ever measure up to my mental and emotional vision of Middle Earth. So I went, just to see a movie. On that ground, it was superb. I enjoyed the movie and so did my 7 kids. And even though I had read the Trilogy to them some years back, two have turned to read them on their own.
