Summary: Ocean, 1 - Man, zero
Review: I liked the score and I don't think there is anything wrong with this movie--except that they made it. Everybody's brave; everybody's stoic; everybody dies. If you wanna be depressed--really depressed--this is for you.

Summary: The Perfect Bore
Review: Is there some rule in Hollywood that states that all ocean disaster epics have to have sophmoric scripts? They would have been better off calling this film "Titantic II" because of the simply awful "Cameronesque" dialog. The special effects aren't that impressive either, because after a while the endless scenes of massive waves become so commonplace it gets boring looking at them. I can't believe that the man who directed the great "Das Boot" twenty years ago has managed to sink so low. Read the book instead and avoid turning your mind into jello by watching this perfectly awful excuse for a movie.

Summary: Just not possible
Review: I didn't see this film until it was released on DVD. Thinking I would be in for a treat, I sat down for an evenings film fun. Unfortunately, this movie happens to be one of the worst I have seen this year. The reasons I hate this film:

1. The story (what story) doesn't seem to be there. Looks like an add on, so that the film makers can show off some SFX.

2. The SFX are not as good as they should be. Now you have a film with no story and limited SFX.

3. The worst part of the whole film has to be that the stuff the men aboard survive is just so unbelievable, its like watching a comic book translation of what should have been a good film.

The sound is fabulous and the picture is great. I also like the features, such as the commentaries and the HBO special. Summary: Fantastic Special Effects!!!
Review: The Perfect Storm has some really great special-effects. The movie starts out a little slow describing all the characters and their relationships but then moves along at a breathless pace. You get so caught up with the crew in the middle of this greatest storm in recorded history that you can't take your eyes away from the screen. This storm occurred in the Atlantic Ocean in October 1991, a true story. You feel like your on the ocean with the crew it is so realistic. It even made me feel seasick at times. George Clooney & Mark Wahlberg did a wonderful job as the two main characters. There are a lot of surprises in this film. You get a good feel for the life & people involved in this tough fishing port of Gloucester, Massachusetts.

I only had one problem with this movie, and it was the soundtrack. I felt the music was really appropriate and well-done, but it should have been toned down a little. It overpowered the actors words to the point where you couldn't tell what they were saying. At least during the storm it would have been better to have no music at all and just the natural sounds. Other than that it's a great movie that I will definitely watch again. The special features & documentaries are great on this DVD version, that explain how the film was made. Really quite interesting

Summary: Nice special effects
Review: This movie showed such great promise when it was released. I never got the chance to see it the theater, and after wacthing the DVD I'm glad I didn't. The story drags for most of the movie, however the ending was a little shocking. The special effects were wonderful, but its too bad that they weren't used to enhance the acting. A touching story, just not told very well. Most likely would have been better with smaller actors, and as a made for TV movie. Rent it before you buy it, I did and I am glad. I heard that the book was better, so I would stick to that.

Summary: Exciting and action-packed; a worthy summer flick!
Review: In one of the most enthusiastic and enthralling historical pieces since Titanic, "The Perfect Storm" hits the waves and hits them hard, soaking audiences the world over with a slam-bang ensemble of stunning visual effects and an explosive sound design that accompanies a heartfelt true story as told in the best-selling novel by Sebastian Junger. It's one of those movies that, after you see it, you find that you had so much fun during the experience that you want to relive it all over again.

The plot tells the story of the Andrea Gail, which is shown in the beginning moments as coming in from a trip at sea, carrying with it a load of fish that is less than satisfying to the owner of the boat. This puts the boat's captain, Billy Tyne, under the added pressure of making a better catch the next trip. He is soon given an ultimatum: he must leave on a trip the following day and bring back a bigger catch if he wants to keep his position as captain. So it's off to sea again for the crew, but not before we are given a warming glance at each one's life on land. Their luck looks like it's running out, so they venture further out into the Atlantic to increase their find. While they are at sea, three storm systems, one of which is a hurricane, begin to move towards one another, and will soon collide directly in the path of the Andrea Gail's return back to port. Tyne gives his crew a choice: they can run away from the storm, or head right into it and attempt to make it back home.

Now, we all know that it wouldn't be a true summer movie if they decided to tuck tail and run, so you guessed it right; they decide to head for port. This is where the action of the film will pick up the pace and never stop moving. As the men battle for their lives at sea, one disaster solved is another brought about, and it's non-stop action up until the gut-wrenching, breathtakingly climactic ending that comes too soon for those deeply involved in its plot.

It has been said that special effects should not be allowed to dominate a story unless it is crucial to the telling of the tale. This movie is an example of how costly special effects can create the setting for the movie's intense action sequences, as most of them would be impossible to film in an actual storm of this magnitude. They work with the film, not dominating it or causing people to pay more attention to the handy work than to the story.

A special comment must be made on the sound design of this film, which is totally superb. The musical score is well-defined, with chords of heavy bass and strings that wrap well into the surround channels. When the storm hits, there is a constant rumbling from the .1 LFE channel that delivers room-shaking bass, as well as surround sound that is sure to please.

The cast works incredibly well with the story, bringing genuine life to each character. George Clooney is fantastic in his role as captain Billy Tyne, the man who nevers gives up when the chances are slim and the luck is down. Mark Wahlberg gives one of his best performances as Bobby Shatford, who is in love with Christina Cotter, played by Diane Lane. These two lovers are the main core for the emotion of the audience, along with the other crew members and their families and how the final fate of the Andrea Gail affects them all. Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio is also present, portraying the only female swordfishing captain in Gloucester who has a crush on Billy Tyne and wants to look out for his well being.

Under the superb direction of Wolfgang Peterson, the Perfect Storm is a brilliant piece of filmmaking that sets a new standard for special effects storytelling as well as bringing to life a group of people who never gave up, even in the most extreme situation imaginable.

Summary: boring
Review: second movie i have called boring from this summer, after MI 2. while i know that the subplot with the second boat was in the book and it actually happened, but the time could have been better spent in developing the characters of the andrea gail better. the Wave was excellent, which is why i give it two stars, as was the attempt at the accents. but we needed to feel more for the characters on the boat.

Summary: There's Nothing But Dark Clouds Hanging Over This Movie!
Review: I'm not going to try and pretend I'm some sort of movie critic. I'm not Roger Ebert, or Leonard Maltin, or anyone else for that matter. So, I'm just going to tell you why, to put bluntly, I hated this movie! The very beginging of this movie had me going along with it. I was interesting in all the characters headed by Capt. Billy Tyne (George Clooney). But not only his characters caught my attention, also Christina Cotter (Diane Lane), Linda Greenlaw (Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio), and Bobby Shatford. But, as soon as the storm started, believe it or not, but the movie got boring! Once the storm starts we're subjected to see the same scenes over and over again. First we see a ferocious splash of water makes its way on the boat. Then, the camera pans back, and we see the boat shift back and forth, and after we see the boat, guess what we see next? We see the water splash back on the boat, then we see the boat shift back and forth. We see the same things happen for about an hour! That's one hour of film wasted. This could of been a good movie. I could of actually liked this movie, but there was such a lack of story. Maybe if they would of showed the men on the boat caught in fear. And, yes, I know there were a FEW scenes where this was shown. Like in the last scene. But, mostly what we see is that boat swaying back and forth, how exciting! It had a good start and went down hill from there. ** 1\2 out of *****
