Review: All I can say is, thank heaven this movie is being re-released, and on DVD as well! My old VHS copy of the American version is nearly worn out. I've seen this movie more times than I can count. I've also encouraged (forced?) many of my friends to see it, and judging from their reactions, I can make the following prediction: when you see "The Big Blue" for the first time, either it will immediately grip you and become part of your soul, or you just won't get it. Obviously, I belong to the first category of viewers. Perhaps it's the achingly beautiful score; perhaps it's the stunning cinematography; or perhaps it's the deceptively simple story of a man struggling to determine who he is and where he belongs. I can't explain exactly why this movie affected me so deeply; I can only say that I would rather own this movie than any other movie I've ever seen.

Review: Luc besson is without a doubt one of the best directors and screenwriters the world has to offer. His vision for all his films are outstanding. He uses all his actors/actresses to the best of their ability ( jean reno-leon,godzilla) is superb at the man with the big lungs, Jean marc barr as the quiet layed back person looking for his place in this world. There are funny moments aswell as sad pieces in this film. The camera work is stunning and set locations are heaven.This movie will stay with you long after it has finised. Thank you luc for this film and lets have the man in hollywood for all action films being produced.

Review: Luc besson is one of the best directors in the film business today. He has given us some of the best action films aswell as introducing us to the excellent actor'Jean Reno'. His action sequences are second to none. We can give examples of these, Niketa(french) is a non stop action film from start to finish with some of the best camera work you are ever likely to see. He has also written the majority of the films he directs so we know he can tell the story with his vision and flare. He gave us the excellent Leon with jean reno, Gary oldman. As you will see from the film he has given gary oldman an excellent and powerful part to play, a piece that will stay with you long after the film has finised. Check out all of luc bessons films on amazon and I can tell you, You will convert. Happy viewing.

Summary: If you are a (free) diver it's a must!
Review: I am probably biased because I'm a scuba diver. However, this movie has an excellent photography and goes through some technical stuff associated with diving so if you are into this don't hesitate to get it. This movie is based on a true story and takes you to the early days of free diving. I haven't seen it on DVD so I don't know how the quality of sound and video are.

Review: "The Big Blue" is a splendid film that tells a story of love, desire and the endurance of the human spirit. The story line is simple enough. A young man, Jacques has a strange affiliation with the ocean. He grows up to love the sea and all her teaming life, and like his father before him he becomes a professional diver. However he is drawn into the competitive world of deep sea diving, a world where men go as deep as they can without the aid of oxygen. Jacques is able to go deeper than most men and it this ability that sets off a chain of events that will lead to tragedy, heartbreak and finally redemption. Jacques childhood friend Enzo is also his rival, where as Jacques dives for the love of the sea, Enzo dives because it will bring him glory and power. This film is about their friendship/rivalry, as they use the ocean to fulfil their respective dreams. Jacques falls in love with an American girl Joanne (played by Rosanna Arquette) who realizes that the man she loves has a destiny beneath the waves, for Jacques is more dolphin than he is man; more at home in the sea than on land. This is a dream of film, the music score is glorious, the filming slow and languid. The characters are wonderful, even the minor ones, Enzo's mother is a treat as she watches proudly over her sons and feeds them mountains of spaghetti. This is a very eclectic film with something for everyone. There are many haunting moments too, one taking place in Jacques bedroom when he dreams that the sea is above him and he can reach up and touch it. "THE BIG BLUE - VERSION LONGUE" is the best buy if you can get it as it includes many scenes that were deleted from the shorter version on offer. Hopefully the DVD version will include these as a bonus. Well worth including in your video/dvd library for future reference.

Review: I was in love with the choppy American cut of this film, but to see the original cut just blows me away. It's about time they released it, so we don't have to kill eachother to win auctions for the PAL tapes. WOO_HOO! Jean Marc Barr is remarkable, as well as Reno. If you buy it and don't love it, send it to me.

Review: If you have American version of "the big blue", get rid of it! and buy this long version. The directer's cut makes a lot of difference,the music, character, etc.....It is totally different movie, and probably the best movie of Besson. It'll make you cry.

Review: One of the early films by filmmaker Luc Besson (the Fifth Element, The Professional (a.k.a. Leon), Subway, La Femme Nikita, Joan D'Arc, producer of Taxi and Taxi 2, etc.). Who likes Luc Besson's Style will ove this movie starring Jean Reno. It's the story of two free divers (without equipment) and reaching their limits, becoming one with nature. Magnific underwater pictures. A must to be seen!

Summary: Please put the Original US Version on DVD!!!
Review: Like many others who discovered this well overlooked film many years ago, I was greatly disappointed in the Director's Cut. For starters, the US Version's Music Score surpasses the European Score by leapyears and this Director's Cut uses that cheesy synthesizery European Score. :-( Secondly, the additional footage simply adds a little more pointless skin in the form of nudity, but adds little or nothing to the overall story except about 50 minutes of your time. It feels like it's dragging compared to the original US Version and often gives you more information than you wanted - sometimes it's best to not tell the audience everything and let them fill in the blanks themselves. The original US Version is one of my favorite films of all times, but this updated Director's Version doesn't make my cut because the extra stuff is pointless and long and the European Soundtrack is horrible!!!
