Summary: Best. Pirate Movie. Ever
Review: Seriously, pirates are freakin' cool, and everyone knows it. The problem is, Hollywood keeps making crappy movies about them, either trying some lame treasure hunt story (Cuthroat Island) or just reamaking Treasure Island again and again. . .and again. Luckily, all bad things, as well as good things, must come to an end.

Now, thanks to Jerry Bruckheimmer, Gore Verbinski, and the irresistable Johnny Depp, the first Pirates of the Caribbean swashbucles its way into movie greatness. Truly, this is the new millenium's Princess Bride if ever there was one. Not since Mandy Patinkin's potrayel of Spaniad Inigo Montoya has a supporting character been so perfect and show-stopping as Captain Jack Sparrow. Depp chews up the flick's scenery with wonderful flamboyance that is balanced precariously just this side of overplayed, and provides some of the best laughs in the last year.

Compared to the genius that Depp infuses Sparrow with, you would think that relative newcomer Orlando Bloom would seem static and boring in comparison. Not so. Bloom's William Turner is the yin to Sparrow's yang, and is played with emotion and uncertainty, as befits a blacksmith clearly out of his element, and the romantic interest (Kiera Knightly) is equally well done, breaking into the mainstream magnificently, and both have their stunning moments. And let us not forget Geoffery Rush, who sparkles and snarls his way to villian perfection as Captain Barbossa. In addition, some of the smaller supporting characters are played with surprising depth, and Jonathan Price is just delightful.

The story could have easily been a standard rescue mission about pirates ransoming a governor's daughter, and the cat-and-dog-in-a-barrel team that must save her. However, Disney's film dips into the supernatural, and spins a dark tale of a curse from blood money that has befallen Barbossa and his crew. This in turn gives rise to the best darn living skeleton effects EVER, and some downright amazing action sequences.

And what would a pirate movie be without some swashes to buckle? Pirates rides with the best of them, with superb coreography (courtesy of Bob Anderson of The Princess Bride and The Lord of the Rings fame) and tight direction. There are one or two times where the action is shot a little too close, but for the most part, fights are brilliant, particularly Sparrow's and Barbossa's final duel.

As for the extras on the 2 disk DVD, it's stuffed, even including three full commentary tracks. Don't rent, don't hesitate, buy ASAP.

Summary: A pleasant surprise
Review: Haven't thought of pirates movie would be able make it back again in the modern days, especially when we are talking about we are in the age of Si-fi and fantasy movies that rely heaps on state-of-the-arts computer special effects. Nontheless Pirates of the Caribbean made a good return of the genre to the audience.

Frankly, judging from the dodgy and lengthy title, there was not much hope about it being either entertaining or creative. However, with Johnny Depp, Geoffrey Rush and Orlando Bloom as the leading cast, the attraction of the movie rocketed immediately. Johnny Depp, playing the weird ex-pirate head who got dumped on an isolated island in the middle of nowhere provided a lot of essential credits to the movie. His performance is stunning and spectacular and managed to turn this old jerk into a half-weighted hero. His gestures and all the small movements he created for the character did add a lot of spice to make the character jump out of the script. Johnny Depp once again proved that he could transform any roles into a real character that could last in people's mind.

Geoffrey Rush as the cursed power and wealth hungry pirate provided a lot of dynamics to the movie, especially when he was working with Johnny Depp and Keira Knightley. The whole movement of the story just came in and pushed the plot forward. Although working will strong actors like Johnny Depp and Geoffrey Rush, the two young cast members Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley were not worse off in performance. They showed great integrity in their characters and were able to match with their strong counterparts perfectly. Orlando Bloom still needs time to shake his Legolas image off, but everything needs to have a start and it seems that this is a good start for him. Keira Knightley showed huge difference when compared to her role in Bend it Like Beckam. Both of them should have good chance in the acting career should they be able to choose their roles carefully in the future.

The special effects of the movie concentrated on the transformation of the cursed sailor crew at different occasions and they were well done. It provides a creepy feeling in certain scenes and at other scenes created a haunting effect for the audience.

The story itself is a bit simple but in all is a very entertainment movie for just sit back and relax.

Summary: This is my very favorite movie!
Review: Until Pirates of the Caribbean, I had never seen the same movie more than twice in the theater. I went to Pirates 7 times. Johnny Depp is a great actor and is absolutely mesmorizing in this swashbuckling role. Keira Knightly does a wonderful job herself, I can hardly believe she is only 18. Orlando Bloom is quite convincing as the hero of this story and Geoffrey Rush delivers a solid and scary performance. I cannot wait for the dvd to come out because the features are going to be excellent. If you haven't seen this movie, find a theater somewhere that still has it. Or just prepurchase the dvd because I'm sure you won't regret it.

Summary: A pleasant surprise of the highest order
Review: My expectations for this movie - or its score, for that matter - were not too high. In fact, let's face it: I expected it to suck very, very hard. Fortunately I was pleasantly surprised, nay blown away even. I haven't had this much fun at an action/adventure film since The Mummy. From the astoundingly lush sets and costumes to the beautiful cinematography, to the satisfyingly quotable dialogue, this movie had everything the blusteringly swashbuckling connoisseur could hope for. But what really makes it such a tremendously enjoyable experience is the fantastic acting. Johnny Depp's performance as Jack Sparrow once again proves that he is one of the finest actors of our generation - boastful, swaggering and deliciously over the top he is never boring to watch. Geoffrey Rush is no less excellent as the dreadful undead pirate Captain LeChuck, who kidnaps the beautiful governor's daughter Elaine Marley (Bend it Like Beckham's Keira Knightley) to undo the curse he and his shipmates suffer from. Also great: Orlando Bloom as Elaine's childhood friend Guybrush Threepwood, a dashing (as opposed to merely runny) blacksmith turned pirate. It's all very much The Mummy meets Cutthroat Island, though done with a lot more skill and panache. My second favorite film of the year so far (after Finding Nemo). Too bad Wild Wild West II: The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen didn't turn out to be equally superb.

As for the score, Klaus Badelt (and six other composers, amongst them Jimmy Doodle and Steve Jabalabomsky) once again proves that while he may not be a very original composer, he is superb at filtering other people's work. He distilled the best of Gladiator and Muppet Treasure Island, filtered out all of the annoying Lisa Gerrard whining and cheap synthesizers, added a bit of K-19, Drop Zone and Goblin (the cue accompanying the initial appearance of the Black Pearl was quite reminiscent of their wonderful work for Argento's Suspiria) and mixed it all up, resulting in a marvelous little film music stew. It's all the MV nutrients without the fats! I might even get the CD, if only for that re-orchestrated version of the Drop Zone trailer music.

Satisfying? Yes. But since this is one of the finest adventure films I've seen in ages, I still cannot help but lament that Silvestri didn't write this score. Or Goldsmith. Or Shearmur. Or Debney. Or Doyle. ANYONE!

Summary: But, but...why did it end?
Review: This film was fantastic! I went into the film (the first time) not expecting anything amazing as I'd only gone to see it because I was an Orlando Bloom fan but I stepped out of the cinema at the end of it only to turn round and go back in to the next showing. (I got kicked out after I'd seen it 5 times...so I went across the road to the other cinema!).
Needless to say this film is amazing. Orlando Bloom was fantastic as Will and Johnny Depp had me crying as Jack Sparrow. The CGI was wicked on the skeleton/zombie/shipmates and the scene after the credit paves the way for a sequel, which I'm VERY excited about!
Ahoy me hearties and away!!!

Summary: WOW!
Review: Back in the summer when this came to theatres, I didn't even want to see it for two reasons. 1) Disney. 2) Pirates. Don't get me wrong, as much as I LOVE Disney and the nostalgia that goes with it, a Disney Pirate movie...? I mean come on, right? I've never been more wrong. Pirates of the Carribean is the best movie I've seen in a LONG time. I was dissapointed with matrix 2, xmen 2, etc and this was the show stopper of the summer, I was shocked! I can't WAIT for this to come out, I am not even pre-ordering because I plan to be at the store asap the morning this goes to DVD! Get this, I swear you won't be dissapointed!

Summary: What a Great Time You'll Have!!!
Review: I don't care who you are, or how old you may be -- this movie will thrill and delight you! Magnificent performances by everyone involved! I know everyone has been raving about Depp's portrayal of Jack Sparrow -- and rightly so! -- but the villainous pirate Barbosa is so incredibly well-done by Geoffrey Rush, it's as though he was born to play it! I think it's the only time I've ever heard a pirate on-screen actually say, "Arrr!" without it sounding trite or cliche. You definitely get the sense that the cast enjoyed making this film, and put a great deal of effort into their work. Absolutely CANNOT wait to hold the DVD in my hands!! Avast! Back off from me copy, ye scurvy dog!!

Summary: THEY JUST DONT MAKE MOVIES LIKE THIS ANYMORE
Review: that was what kept saying as we left the theater! The scale of this movie is HUGE. Everything is real, the costumes, the makeup. I only wish on the DVD you could go on the Pirates of the Carribean ride from disney world. Depp is amazing. He has always been an amazing charature actor, and he rocks! Bloom knows how to fence!! The Lord of the Ring really taught him that! This movie just keeps you going!! YOU WILL LOVE IT!!
