Description:

In the glory days of spy flicks and TV shows, I Spy was one of the most entertaining programs of the genre, thanks to the pairing of Robert Culp and Bill Cosby. As spies for the U.S. government, the duo bopped around the world, hiding in plain sight as carefree athletes following the "tennis circuit." Part of the appeal (OK, the gimmick) of the show was that the carefree and dashing agents were always facing death, and beautiful women, in exotic locations. In the four episodes on this DVD, the globetrotting spies find themselves in Mexico, where they do battle with agents for "the other side" and get into various romantic entanglements. Though the show was noteworthy at the time for casting an African American in a lead role, the plots are generally pure escapism. One episode employs a Heart of Darkness motif, with a Russian defector living among villagers as an embodiment of Quetzalcoatl, though the American spies stay at a luxurious hotel where they socialize poolside with a women's synchronized swimming team. A young Sally Kellerman turns up in another episode as a spy who has just had a baby. The implausibility just adds to the fun, and I Spy stands up as a great example of tongue-in-cheek '60s cool. --Robert J. McNamara
