Summary: Pitch Black
Review: The special effects were cool, especially with the sky and the planets. Riddick's eyes were cool. The acting was average/poor. The events were too convinient to be taken seriously. For example, they just HAPPENED to crash on the planet when it was going to get dark. And that happened once every 20-some years? It was also convinient that one of the characters could see in the dark. This movie had some good parts. I especially liked how Riddick did that shoulder-out-of-joint trick to get free of that pole. But overall this movie was a waste of time. I recommend this movie to anyone lacking a better imagination.

Summary: Unfulfilled potential...
Review: I had great hopes for this movie. An interesting and exciting premise, a multi-cultural cast, great cinematography and decent special effects.

So what went wrong? The cast, while multi-cultural, were quite weak and didn't quiet have the edge as Sig. Weaver in Alien. The plot at times was confusing, and at times boring, as a bizzare side plot concerning the escaped prisoner unfolded. The Aliens weren't frightening as much as frustrating. Lacking the killer touch of Gigers' 'Alien' trilogy Aliens. Although the 'Only-come-out-when-it's-dark' touch held interest for a little while.

Could have been better, but there are much worse.

Summary: This could have been a great movie...
Review: This movie plays on a universal human fear: The fear of the dark, and what is hiding in it. I am not talking about your average nighttime dark, I am talking about complete and utter blackness. For this reason alone, the movie should have been far more gripping and frightening than it was. A major flaw was, in my opinion, the handling of the plot. I found the characters underdevelopped, and a few plot twists where introduced and then abandoned. This left me unsatisfied and wanting more. The plot also failed to build up the tension to a suitable pitch. I kept waiting for the story to take off, but it just seemed to linger and then end abruptly, never quite managing to carry me along with it. All in all, an unsatisfying experience which was a pity as I think this film had the potential of having the impact that The Matrix had (in a different way). Visually speaking, this movie presented something new to me, namely the scenery, and the light as it would appear on a planet with three suns. The eclipse is equally stunning, and the creatures are truly creepy. For these reasons alone, I recommend seeing this movie, but rent it first. It might not be something you want to own.

Summary: Lacks Imagination
Review: It might be a good alien rip-off, but why not just watch aliens? The action and special effects are good, but the plot has so many holes... for example, what do these aliens eat over the years when there is sunlight? Pretty massive population of these creatures when there are no other discernable sources of food except for the little glow bugs, who make a surprise appearance when the characters need them most. And the night happens only once every ten years! Why would these types of creatures evolve on a planet where they usually can't hunt? Seems a little forced...

Summary: FIRST-RATE ALL THE WAY
Review: I avoided seeing this movie for quite a while because the scenes I saw made it look like just another horror thriller, which generally don't appeal to me. Upon renting this disc, I was immediately pleasantly surprised by the opening scenes, which are among the most tense and exciting scenes I've seen in years. Listening to the commentary tracks (there are two separate commentary tracks), the director talks about trying to keep things easy to follow for the audience, which was difficult. While the resulting film is fairly self-explanatory, you will likely want to see it a second or even a third time to fully understand exactly what is going on. And listening to the commentary afterward is almost a requirement, since it fleshes out the film's intentions and meanings.

DVD quality is great. The movie itelf is fascinating and much more rich and complex than I thought it would be. They used a special film-bleaching procedure for the daytime planet shots, which works exceedingly well for creating an alien look. The occasional glimpses of a huge nearby planet with dual rings are a wonder to behold. The alien beings are well-rendered, and while they may evoke memories of the creatures in the Alien films, these are wholly original creations. The scenes where they are overwhelmed by vast numbers of creatures are well-done and clear.

I've never heard of any of these actors before, but I expect we will hear from them again, as they all deliver top-notch performances. A lot of work went into making this, by the director, actors, and crewmembers, and it shows. This is more of a sci-fi movie than a horror movie, which to me at least was a good thing. If you like sci-fi, this has all the makings to be a classic.

Summary: A Cut Above The Norm For Sci-Fi Thrillers!
Review: Looking at the premise alone, Pitch Black is basically Alien in the desert. However, the execution is surprisingly solid. The characterization is usually two-dimensional in pictures like this, but just about everyone in this movie has an ample supply of virtues and flaws. The heroes certainly aren't perfect (one makes a decision to save herself that nearly kills everyone else, while another is a drug addict), and neither is the villain. Diesel's Riddick turns out to have a certain amount of nobility to him, while staying true to his own evil nature. The darker side of the characters' human nature contributes just as much to the tension in the film as the albino monsters flying over their heads, which goes a long way toward making this more enjoyable than expected.

As far as the DVD extras are concerned, the 3 minutes of footage added to the unrated version will probably go unnoticed by anyone who watched the movie in the theater (I only figured out what they were by listening to the Twohy/Diesel commentary). The "Pitch Black" premier dance party footage is a waste of both time and space, but the "making of" documentary is fairly good, and it includes the movie trailers, which I always like to see in a DVD.

Summary: Great start...terrible finish
Review: The movie does have nice visuals and the crash of the space ship is done very well. In fact, the visuals on the planet surface almost make you feel warm. Unfortunately, all of the tension and action builds to an absolutely absurd and anticlimactic finish. Too bad even to be categorized as predictable. I will probably purchase it just so that I can have access to the nice bits but it is lightyears away from much better horror/scifi such as Event Horizon or Alien.

Summary: Pitch Black
Review: Pitch Black was an excellent Sci-fi action flick. It had awesome special affects with an ending that no one saw coming. It was definitely an original idea for a movie. I'd recomend it to anyone who wants to see an incredible movie.

Summary: Rent it then you decide
Review: Good things: Sounds is good, special effects are excellent and video quality is good also. Bad things: The beginning is boring. I even slept for 15 minutes and didn't miss a thing. Nothing spectacular about the alien creatures, and not even the way they kill.

My recomendation: Rent it and be the judge.

Summary: 5 STAR SLEEPER
Review: I was able to sleep soundly 15 minutes into the movie... Only felt the desire to freeze frame or slow mow, once, and that was not anything spectacular...Glad I only rented this, and that I can still take it back and find a descent movie before the rental store closes..
