Summary: it's a rental
Review: i work at a video store and am a huge anime fan with a fairly large personal collection. i pre-ordered this upon reading some reviews, then i got the chance to see it before it got released and shipped to me. i changed my mind about wanting to own a copy. this film is fast paced, with some nice fight sequences, but over-all the plot was lacking. i was hard-pressed to get involved with any characters, had no connection toward any of them at all. basically a no brainer.

Summary: A very fun action filled movie
Review: I don't know what people mean when they say this movie reminds them of a James Bond film. In my eyes it by no means resembles one. Its kind of like a weird Indiana Jones Terminator mystical ghost in the shell kind of thing (not really - -). Its a fun movie and I suggest you watch it. Its basically about Noah's arc being found and it turning out to be a thing that can change the worlds climate and stuff. There are some good fight scenes but there are definetely better animes out there. I like this film better then Ghost in the shell because it actually keeps you involved the whole movie, and you don't ever want to stop it or fast forward.

Try this one

Summary: No pretense
Review: Spriggan is an excellent work in the super soldier anime genre. Based off the manga by Takashige and Minagawa (who are now making the best selling manga "Arms"), Spriggan has some subtle themes but by no means is challenging. The story is pretty fast paced with a fight scene punctuating every 5-8 minutes of plot development. A nice touch is that the good guys aren't really all that good ^_^

The ending is a little hokey but the combat scenes are unparralleled! Highly detailed, incredibly articulated and dynamic animation. As some one who's worked at some US animation shops I can say this is some of the best stuff I've seen in the past few years (in terms of the motion)...think Cowboy Bebop level of quality.

The non-action stuff is also beautiful compositionally. Kawasaki, the director, keeps his pallette very desaturated so it has a slighlty melencholoy feel to it. The soundtrack is also worth mentioning as it is very, very good. Maybe one of the best action movie soundtracks I have ever heard. I saw this on the big screen in Japan when it came out and saw it a few times since at various festivals (subtitled). I have enjoyed every screening.

Summary: Action Action Action
Review: Not every great anime film has to be thought provoking and deeply metaphorical. As in live-action features, anime can be subdivided into a variety of different tiers: drama, mystery/suspense, horror, action; etc. To say a film isn't any good because it doesn't wholly encompass all these different genres is quite simply asking too much. Spriggan is the action movie that all action movies aspire to. Character designs are excellent, the animation is incredibly fluid, and the story, unless you're an infant, is quite easy to follow and is intriguing to boot. This movie is for those of you who like to shut your brain down for a time, and just enjoy the pure visceral thrill that a good action flick can create. Highly recommended.

Summary: Turn your brain off ...
Review: As it may help you to have more fun, if you think that 007 movies are the most unrealistic things you have ever seen, it's only because you never gave Spriggan a chance.

The plot is an excuse for some of the greatest action scenes ever seen on anime, it revolves around Noah's Ark and a black-ops to prevent it being stolen (note that there's nothing that suggests that the original researchers of the Ark where to put it to good use, anyway).

While watching it you may see lot's of action, but very few are made by the main character, who is Spriggan number one. Instead, another Spriggan, who doesn't even bother to tell his rank, does so much stuff that at some point you start to wonder on what the main character can actually do being number 1, what would open the path to a sequel so fans could wait for even better action (this movie is a small part of the original manga).

If you're in for action and don't care for the lack of a plot, Spriggan will be an amazing movie to watch, as it is very well done and has great sound.

Summary: even anime gods have their bad days
Review: Despite the hype, Spriggan is second rate, at best. Fantastic character design and animation, mind you, but ultimately the zero plot and lack of character developement drags it down. I saw it in NYC,and my expectations were no where near met. The music was good and the overall design of the film was fantastic, but pleeeeeeze hire a decent writer. Go buy Jin Roh, or Vampire Hunter D, but when this video comes out rent before purchase.

Summary: WOW!!!! It's finally out....in English
Review: ...

Anime, Japanese Animation, Japanimation shouldn't be called cartoons, especially after seeing this amazing movie. It's action eyecandy! Cartoons are meant to be funny and are kept from dealing with serious issues. Thanks to Spriggan, there's like CAR CHASES, Foreign locales like Turkey, which actually look like Turkey, Crowds actually move. Glass and tiles shatter from gunshots. Jungle Warfare in the beginning. Watch a building explode realistically. The gunfights, down to the detail of a gun, and watching the tracer fire from bullets. Japanese characters actually look Japanese, Turkish people actually look Turkish down to the clothing.

However, the story is sort of anti-American and anti-WESTERN. The Americans or, rather a group of Mercenary Americans are trying to Conquer the world with NOAH'S ARK, "Who ever controls it is GOD". Some of the enemies are even code named after the Atomic bombs that were used on Japan. It controls the Earth's temperature, weather, and animals (it can make Floods anywhere on Earth for example). It has all the animals that ever existed, and can give them life, like the dinosaurs. All in all, it's a great movie.

Summary: ...What?
Review: In a word... "bizarre". Don't get me wrong, the film has its redeeming qualities, but none of said qualities have anything to do with plot. First, the good stuff: The character animation is astounding. Subtle nuances in pose, body language, and the occasional bio-mechanical prosthetic limb rival those in any other animated film to date. The visuals are fantastic, the sound production top-notch... but then it all falls apart. The plot (or lack of) revolves around a high schooler who is also a covert-ops soldier for an organization charged with the protection of historical artifacts. Apparently brainwashed at an ealry age, our hero proceeds to drive around, shoot stuff, get really strong, kill half of the characters in the movie, and duke it out to the death with Papa Smurf's evil twin brother, who is imbued with amazimg psychic powers (not unlike those kids from "Akira", but with less personality). Some self-serving psycho babble about Noah's Ark, and some very odd dinosaur chase sequences serve not to clarify just what the hell is supposed to be going on, but rather to give the audience further reason to scratch their heads and wonder why, exactly, they paid as much for tickets as they did. If you can find it on video, it's worth a rental for the skill of the animation, but if one is attempting to find a paragon of quality foreign film-making, I'd suggest running in the other direction and buying a Kurosawa flick.

Summary: Good action anime
Review: Well, first let me start off by saying I haven't seen THIS DVD as it hasn't come out yet, so I can't commment on quality of picture and sound. However, I have seen the original version in japanese cinema, and it's a great movie.

It is apparent that it had a big budget, and as I understand it was meant to be "the movie of the year" back in -98 when it came out in japan. (hence the big budget)
For some reason, the hoopla about the movie vanished. But don't get fooled by this and think it's a bad movie, becous it's not.

I won't mention anything about what this movie is about since it's allready written in the editorial review, but... animation and soundtrack is great.

Oh, and eventhough(?) it's about the ark and aincient artifacts, this is an action flick, much in the same style as Akira. No, it's not exactly like Akira, and the fact that the maker of Akira was involved in making this film, it's unfair to say that it's "his" movie. This one is quite able to stand on it's own legs!

Maybe I should mention that this is a animated version of a manga with the same name, and this movie deals with the first part of the manga... So if you've read the manga, you know what to expect, and if you haven't, you'll know where to look for more answers to events happening in the movie, as the manga is much longer. (obviosly)

I gave this movie 4 stars becous I leave it to the other buyers to raise it to 5 ;)

So, buy it, see it, like it!

Summary: An average anime action movie
Review: Well what can I say,it has animation done by the folks behind anime classics like Metropolis,Akira, and Ghost in the shell, has well staged action sequences and superb soundtrack. Knowing that you might be expecting something the next Akira, but you might end up a bit dissapointed. Unlike other big budget animes that are more plot oriented, all Spriggan has going for it is nice animation and lots of action.

The animation in the film is some of the best I've seen and the action sequences are some of the most intense i've in any other anime or live action film. There are a lot of elements like the pyscic child that seem to be ripped right out if akira, but hey that what happens when the creators of akira worked on this movie. The movie has lots of promise at first but then turns into a simple action movie. It's like your expecting something big like 2001:a space oddesy but end up seeing another James bond type action movie.

All in all Spriggan isn't the best anime ever made,it's actually pretty average, but it's still worth to see once just for fun. I enjoyed the movie and plan to buy the dvd. Spriggan may not be as geat as akira or ghost in the shell, it's still up there on my list.
