Summary: A classic pirate movie!
Review: Although I don't yet have the DVD, I saw this movie when it was new and it has always been one of my favorites.
Robert Shaw is incomparable as Ned Lynch and Peter Boyle is a great villian as always. And Genevieve Bujold(when she was just a lass)is a smashing leading lady.
I recommend it to all!

Summary: If you like "Pirates of the Carribean", you'll love this!
Review: Caught this film on HBO in the late 70s and have loved it ever since. The tree of the plot is your typical pirate script, but it is leafed out by twists of humor and wit - subtle and otherwise, excellent acting and wonderful photography. There's even a bit of mysterious kinkiness, mostly focused on a small part very well done by a pre-Oscar Anjelica Huston.
Robert Shaw is handsome, sexy and funny as "Red" Ned Lynch. Genevieve Bujold is marvellous as a beautiful, gutsy, spirited woman who, though she needs Lynch's help, is every bit a match for him. Other memorable contributions are made by James Earl Jones (sexy and fit) and Geoffrey Holder (notable as the voodoo Baron in Live and Let Die and as long-time pitchman on the 7-Up ads). The booming baritone voices of these two could rattle windows. Beau Bridges, Peter Boyle, Kip Niven and the aforementioned Huston ably fill out a high-quality cast.
If you want a movie that will entertain, amuse and delight both men and women and isn't the 'same old same old', this is definitely a pirate's "treasure."

Summary: A Piece of Fluff Sure to Take you Away From it All
Review: For a piece of video that will surely make you forget your problems for at least the length of it, this 1976 release of the action-packed, stunt-riddled, SWASHBUCKLER will foot the bill! While Robert Shaw is best remembered for his performance in JAWS, this movie is in no danger of being classed as one of his best. Reminiscent of his earlier days in THE PIRATES in Great Britain, Robert Shaw is clearly the hero in this film. James Earl Jones, Geoffrey Holder, Beau Bridges, Peter Boyle and Genevieve Bujold fill out the cast nicely. Anjelica Huston makes her first appearance in a movie and utters not one word! Who would believe from this introduction she would go on to win an Academy Award! Set in Jamaica, the film is lavishly photographed and just seeing The Golden Hind skimming the waves of the Caribbean is a sight unto itself. While the film does have some semblance of a plot, it seems the writer forgot to fill it in a bit more. The finish comes far too soon and ends much too abruptly. It made me wish for more.

Summary: It's a farce dummy! And amusing too.
Review: Great and fun farce of pirate spectaculars. Dry humor, beautiful scenary, and a very handsome young James Earl Jones. Also a "girl" with guts, only one, but that's more than most adventure flicks offer. We watch this one every couple of months it so charming.

Summary: A huge waste of time & talent!
Review: Have you ever really looked forward to seeing a movie and then been terribly disappointed after actually seeing it? That's how I'd describe "Swashbuckler". I hated everything about this one. The good guys weren't funny, and the bad guys were simply creepy. I know garbage when I see it, and this movie was garbage!

Summary: Still one of the best times I've ever had at a movie!
Review: I also first saw this movie back in 1976 when it was first released in the theatres. I bought the VHS tape as soon as it was available (paid $100 for it, too!) and now intend to add the DVD to my collection. Robert Shaw was one of the best and most versatile actors in the business, and here he added yet another memorable character to his repertoire - that of Captain "Red" Ned Lynch, a dashing, swashbuckling, lusty pirate, trying to free the people from the evil tyrant Lord Durant (played by the wonderful Peter Boyle). Together with his friend Nick Debrett (superbly played by James Earl Jones), they take us through an exciting and adventurous tale that has everything - action, romance, lots of very subtle humour (don't miss Beau Bridges as Major Folly, one of the best characters in the movie), and a magical score that will take you back in time. I've lost track of how many times I've watched this movie over the years, but it's one you can watch again and again. It's just as great today as it was 27 years ago. Don't look for any brilliant stories or hidden messages - this movie is pure escapist fun! Sit back and enjoy it!

Summary: Good Rainy Day Movie
Review: I first saw this film as a kid on a double-bill with "The Hindenburg" and enjoyed it immensely. Revisting it for the first time since then, it's still a good film but lightweight fodder. Director James Goldstone is going for the rollicking and high-spirited and he succeeds for the most part. I thought that Robert Shaw and Genevieve Bujold, for the most part, were just phoning in their performances. On the other hand, Peter Boyle as the evil Lord Durant relishes his chance to play villainy. The always dependable James Earl Jones gives a high-spirited rendering of Nick, Shaw's Red Ned Lynch's co-hort. This is the kind of film you don't so much as seek out but stumble upon. I will say this much, though. I enjoyed this old-fashioned homage to high-seas fare more than the CGI dominated "Pirates of the Caribbean".

Summary: Saw it at 6, saw it at 25- loved it both times
Review: I first saw this film in 1980, on TV in Scotland, whilst the babysitter was busy. I was 6 years old. I absolutely loved every second of it, and remembered it enough to search through the Web for "The Scarlet Buccaneer" as I remembered it being titled. I finally found it, ordered it... and adored it. I giggled as much as I did back then, and appreciated it in a whole different way. I agree, the plot is silly, the characters ridiculous- but it's still a great film, and great fun for an evening in with friends and a few bottles of wine...

Summary: This Is A Keeper
Review: I first saw this movie on HBO back in 1980 or so, and managed to tape it and was so happy to finally find it for sale. This is one of my favorite movies. It's something you can watch just for fun and entertainment. Robert Shaw and James Earl Jones were the best team....I loved the whole cast....until I saw this movie, I would never have envisioned Robert Shaw as a romantic lead, (much less as a pirate!) but I can't imagine anyone else as Ned Lynch! Treat yourself...watch this movie..and enjoy!

Summary: Swashbuckling fan for 24 years!
Review: I saw this movie in 1976 at the theatre when it was first released. It went to see it twice. It had action, great actors with amazing voices, humor, romance and a wonderful score. What more do you want from a movie. For many years I forgot about it until I saw it at the video store and shared it with my teenage daughter. She loved it and has asked me to order it, which is why I am doing this review now. After 24 years, it's still a fun film that can be watched over and over again.
