Summary: It was the creature movment that facinated me.
Review: It wasn't the writing that was so bad; a young career woman has to choose between success in an evil Patriarchy (against an evil boss) and true (yuk)love. That's not a bad plot idea. I mean, godzilla has to happen somewhere and to some people who are busy in some kind of lives. The film started great with the exposition overlays, then got cutsie with Broderick singing "Singing in the Rain." Who thought that the girl's facial gestures were interesting, the director? They alone sank the film. How does the director let the crying on the bed scene go into the film. It was horrible acting at it's worst. What was great was the movement of the big creature and the babies. How to take creatures built around the shape of Humans, and give them lizard movements that reflect back to the descendants of reptiles that we are, and still keep the integrity of the creature? This spoke of a facinating involvmentof some FX geeks. The raptors were great in J Park, but this was more interesting. The mind of the creature, acted in the gestures and movement was brilliantly choreoographed and portrayed. Watch the movie for this, and laugh at the rest. This could be a cult movie for bad Human acting and great creature acting. I loved it.

Summary: Great Disc, Terrible Movie.
Review: Another in a line of bad films done well on DVD. Rewind to May of 1998. I'm in class trying to get out, psyched up to see nothing other than "Godzilla." School's out and I run across the entire Chicago loop in somewhere around 15-20 minutes. I sit down in my seat at the temple of cinema, McClurg Court, the best theater in Chicago. And as the two hours pass, I just got angry and more angry. It's simply a horrid film, with a terrible script and bad acting(with the exception of Jean Reno).

And the most interesting thing is that, on video, like a lot of other things, it's not quite as bad. It's up from the level of "Made Me Angry" to "Well, It's Sort Of Harmless". The story revolves around the badly miscast Matt Broderick as a scientist plucked from his work to investigate and study what turns out to be "Godzilla". He's joined by a French Army guy(Jean Reno), his ex-girlfriend(Maria Pitillo in the year's worst female performance) and Hank Azaria(who's always somewhat funny). Those are the characters who are chased throughout by Godzilla. That's the plot.

The problems are many: Godzilla, although sort of an ok special effect, doesn't become a character. No plot. Really poor acting. The film goes on 30 minutes or so too long. There are some positively done scenes during the chases that are effective, but they're few and far between.

The DVD is done really, really well by Columbia/Tristar. The transfer is excellent and, for some reason, the dark scenes look clearer and better on the DVD than they did in the theater. But there are no artifacts and the DVD boasts a really fantastic transfer, with crisp colors in the day scenes especially.

The sound is another matter. If you like your neighbors, keep it low.If you're trying to drive your neighbors away, this is perfect....

Summary: Entertaining & exciting, but not very deep
Review: I enjoyed the movie a lot when I recently rented it. If you don't expect drama or a deep plot, you can be very satisfied with this film. Really, I don't think people should expect the "monster movie" genre to be very intellectual in general. Godzilla is a fast-paced, modern edition of that type of movie and I suggest it to all that enjoy action & adventure films.

Summary: A "OK" movie
Review: I have read some of the customers reviews and I must agree, the movie has SPECTACULAR graphics. But why dident the cab explode like the heli's? And wasent that convenient that there was a HUGE power line right there for him to stick it into Godzilla's gum? Not to mention that if that monster is BIGGER than a sky scrapper, shouldent the ENTIRE city tummble down around it self, from the several hundreds of thousands of tons walking around? And the chase scene, if Godzillas legs are that long he should be able to get around quite effectivly, like a sigle bound = 1-2 miles? I give this movie a four because I liked the special effects alot. And the monster looked cool too. I only seen him breath green fire once, how odd. :-)

Summary: Crap.
Review: I often enjoy big, brainless action-fests (I even liked Double Team). I'm a fan of many (but not all) of the old Godzilla movies. However, neither of the mitigating factors above could keep me from detesting this "film". It just sucked. The filmmakers apparently saw The Lost World about thirty times, and copied all of it in a New York setting (along with rip-offs from King Kong and other classics). Tell me, just how does a 400 foot lizard stay hidden in the middle of a city? And did you notice that, every time Godzilla MIGHT have been wounded by something, everyone thought he was dead and started cheering? (And the monster is constantly referred to as "he", but with anything that big it shouldn't be hard to tell what gender it is.) By the way, even the special effects were bad. It was always obvious that Godzilla never existed anywhere except inside a computer. And the movie was an hour too long. And it didn't even look like Godzilla. And... sigh.

Summary: Writing Counts! It takes more than killer FX to make a movie
Review: I feel bad for the wonderful Digital FX crew at Centropolis who put in the hours and the talent only to be let down by Director Roland Emerich and whoever wrote this totally flawed script. This was NOT written by a real screenwriter as every stupid mistake possible was made. Worst is the outright disrespect for the viewer's intelligence. For example in one scene an old man drops a fishing line off a dock into the east river and suddenly he hooks Godzilla who is at least a mile out to sea. Also this massive Creature simply disappears in midtown manhattan -- give me a break. This movie was annoying beyond belief. The DVD is worth getting only for the visual FX supervisor's comentary as the movie progresses.

Summary: What did you expect? Shakesphere?
Review: I for one, think that the movie was fine. Sure, the humans in the film were a bit thin on character, but the film was about Godzilla more than them. If you came into this with realistic expectations (basically entertaining eye candy) then you got what you paid for.

Summary: A DVD to avoid
Review: This DVD has good sound but has a huge shortage of plot. If you like the original Godzilla don't go near this turkey.

Summary: Cool But needs more score tracks
Review: I liked this CD Puff Daddy was the best of the songs. I loved the movie and I really hope Sony releases a Score Album for it. I loved the background music in the film. I was quite upset when only two score tracks were on the CD. I'll be first in line for the Score Album.

Summary: Not as bad as I had heard
Review: I, too, was afraid to waste my money, but I really like action shows. I was pleasantly surprised. I wish casting directors would forget Mathew Broderick (I will NEVER forgive them for casting him in Ladyhawke).

Also, I can glady suspend belief and enjoy a ridiculous tale about giant lizards. I can't accept a smart scientist loving a dumb blonde no matter what bad things she does. How can special effects be so wonderful, and the characters suck so badly? Is it THAT hard to do a decent job with the 14 minutes these people are around?
