Summary: Could have been alot better.
Review: The beach just didnt do Alex Garlands book justice, i know it's a hard thing to do getting everything right from a 5 star book but there was no real feeling in the film as there was in the book the story line did'nt develop no where near as well as it should have, the thing is this had the potential to be so much more than it became, i think that all the actors and actress's acted well but the main thing that lacked and seemed to lag in this was the over all development and character progression, i dont have a problem with Leonardo di caprio and his acting as the titanic which may have shown a few leaks in his acting profession was one of his only bad performances in my opinion, gangs of new york and catch me if you can are two great films with some good acting by Leo in so i would personally give this film a miss if i had a second chance or maybe get it as a rental or on VHS if your still intrigued.

Summary: Good soundtrack nevertheless
Review: I guess the main reason why this movie is quite okay for me is because I am a beach lover. And watching movies as such makes me realize what paradise I'm missing. Unfortunately, the only achievement of the movie is probably the art direction, cinematography,production design (something that will lead you to the beauty of the beach). I was quite disappointed with the story though because it really meant nothing. I did think that it had a good start but dragging you all the way for 2 hours is just not easy to take. Nevertheless, the soundtrack of the movie keeps you on. I haven't seen Trainspotting or Shallow Grave so I have no basis of comparison but I think Danny Boyle has a good vision in his direction. Almost everyone are disappointed with this Danny Boyle film. I will have to see Trainspotting why so.

Summary: Ok.
Review: I liked this film for it's absurdity, locations and ....something. DiCaprio, 27, plays a guy who's presumably 17 or so. To be honest, he doesn't do it all that well, but the other actors are fine, though none of them are very involving. It felt like some scenes were missing, a character asks DiCaprio why he all of a sudden went crazy and the audience never found out why either. The movie could have been directed in a deeper style, esp. for the end scenes. I could see it being a book, but they should have adapted it much better than this!

Summary: Unappreciated and Underrated Gem!
Review: Let me start by saying that The Beach has got to be one of the most underrated movies of 2000. Here and there people were saying "It was pointless" or "It was boring". The Beach first of all, is not a completely pointless movie. It actually displays kind of an interesting theme of the existence of paradise, one that many movies have never explored. And in terms of being boring, The Beach may not have tremendous explosions or boat chases, but if you watch it with an open mind, you will find it very captivating. Here's the story: Richard(Leonardo DiCaprio) is a young American traveler, seeking an adventure away from the beaten tourist path. Staying in Thailand, Richard meets joint-smoking, manic Daffy (Robert Caryle) who rattles on and on about a secret beach that is suppoedly flawless in all ways. The next morning, Richard finds that Daffy has killed himself, but left behind a map, showing the way to The Beach. After persuading Francoise(Virginie Ledoyen who is simply gorgeous) and her boyfriend Etienne(Guillaume Canet)to come along with him, the three embark ona journey to the island, where they find two different groups of people, flourish with one peacefully for weeks, and live life it's fullest. However, when Richard begins seeing Daffy everywhere he goes, he begins to discover that beyond the shores of paradise lies something darker and terrifying. The acting in the film is acceptable, but DiCaprio and Caryle steal the show as the unlikely duo of Richard and Daffy. The scenery is simply beautiful as well. As for mood, the film starts out as an adventure with occasional humor, but slowly transforms into a cross between a horror film and a thriller, growing darker, more disturbing, and much more violent. Many people say that the film cannot decide what it wants to be, but then again that fits with the theme of the story. Three travelers find what they believe is paradise and unexpectedly turn it into a living nightmare. Ignore all of the negative reviews and rent this movie. If it's made by the same team that did "Trainspotting" and "Shallow Grave", it can't be bad.

Summary: Pointless, Boring, and all Hype.
Review: Derivative, inconsistent plot meets with Generation X special effects (a "life as a video-game sequence, woo-hoo!). The result: A very long movie which leaves you feeling like you'll pay in the afterlife for having wasted two hours of your life on it. And it could have been worse! The deleted scenes in the DVD include a "Stomp"-like sequence, which shows how misguided this project truly was! If Di Caprio wanted to shed the teen-heart rob image by turning himself into the American version of Ewan McGregor's Renton, it is safe to say he failed miserably. "The Beach" is a far cry from "Trainspotting" - in fact, the former's so bad, it makes you wonder whether the same Danny Boyle was behind the two films! It's no wonder Mr. Boyle hasn't been heard from in awhile (he's been mostly relegated to TV duties). Heck, I was so disappointed and disgusted with "The Beach," I almost sold my "Trainspotting" DVD! We can only Boyle rebounds like Kevin Smith did after his dismal "Mallrats." Two words really describe this movie: Pig Vomit.

Summary: The Beach- a masterpiece in disguise
Review: I found the beach to be excellent viewing, when you hear many negative things about a film, you are inquisitive to find out for yourself. Whilst watching the film i noticed how the storyline became more and more interesting, i didn't, at any point want to stop watching the film. It mixes small traces of city life, with the reality of being on a desert island. Intelligent script writing and talented acting produced an excellent film, with depth, that i personally feel is very underrated.

Review: first of all, i give this movie 10 stars!!!! i thought it was great. i read some pretty bad reviews from rodger ebert. but, can we trust everything and old guy like him thinks about movies!!!! i loved it. it's a teenager movie!!!!!! i think that's why i liked it so much. i thought it was a great story and i really loved the ending. i thought that the casting was great too!!!!!! two thumbs way up!!!!! Leo is awsome!!!!!!

Review: This is an all-great movie !! First of all, it is set in Paradise, which is good. The images etc. are fabulous. Then the story is one of courage, trying to re-create a happy universe on a samll secluded island. The hardships and perils are greate, but fnally the conclusion is allright. (except the only ones who die are the ones that deserve it less

Summary: Trouble in paradise
Review: An appealing blend of disposable teen drama and a more serious examination of the perils of utopia-made-real. With the assistance of a mysterious map, typical teen hedonist Richard (Leonardo DiCaprio) and two French pals find their way to a secret island off the coast of Thailand. It turns out to be the fiercely defended home of two groups - a commune of recovering yuppies led by the charismatic Sal (Tilda Swinton), and a gang of well-organised pot farmers with a penchant for heavy side-arms. Tensions rise when the new arrivals threaten the balance between the groups, and violent trouble quickly ensues. Beneath the melodrama, "The Beach" is an interesting film. It shows that even in our urge for simplification, we cannot escape our humanity. Petty jealousies, the natural love of comfort, and our preference for the privileges of Western culture - such as good dental and medical care - ultimately ensure that a utopia-realised is very close to Hell. DiCaprio is good as the smarmy American, and earns his money in some particularly dramatic scenes. But Tilda Swinton steals the show at the climax when her Sal reveals the true extent she'll go to in order to preserve her way of life.

Review: Not bad, not bad, this movie would have been better had we seen more rock pools, or crabs, or ice-creams, or fat middle-aged women trying to squeeze into a bikini 4 sizes too small for them, or a seabird staggering around, covered in oil from a Spanish tanker, or some sewage, or a dog having a poo, or a sun burnt fat man.
