Summary: "Veja Du" - something you wish never did happen!
Review: I recently met a couple of friends for dinner and somehow we all found ourselves discussing movies. Best movie of all times, worst movie of all times and so on and so forth. Then I said: "here's the most misunderstood movie of all times: Hudson Hawk". One of the other guys immediately replied with: "Yeah! You definitely misunderstood it if you still call it a movie" and then continued to mention that it was, in his opinion, one of the worst movies ever made.

Well, I think it is a great movie. It is one of the best action-adventure spoofs ever made, parodying and messing up virtually every convention ever established in this genre... or story telling in general. The relatively insignificant mess of a plot is only a place-holder for the incredibly witty script and slapstic comedy. If you look at it for what it is, there's really not a lot to dislike about Hudson Hawk. It's a very funny, superbly directed and very well acted piece of... well... nonsense.

The DVD contains a very nice, tounge in cheek, commentary track by director Michael Lehman who seems to have handled all the criticism and bad publicitly rather well. He definitely acknowledges the fact that this movie was a badly marketed and grossly misunderstood joke... yet "it was very successful in Europe" (what can I say, the Europeans obviously know better).

The bottom line is this: if you like action scenes, witty dialogs and cool special effects all wrapped up in a completely non-sensical plot, this movie is definitely for you!

Summary: Funny, Surreal, Unpretentious, Clever?
Review: An original flim that aspires to be just a silly story is a rare thing. Bruce Willis and Danny Aiello are the wonderfully un-real cat-burglars whose best way to make sure they keep to time on a robbery is by singing "Swinging on a Star!" They're up against a wicked mega-corporation run by Richard E Grant and Sandra Bernhard in a race with the CIA (in the guise of James Cockburn and lackeys) to build a mythical "machina del oro" - or "Gold Machine" for those at home. The action is as surreal as you can get outside a cartoon; the characters are painted in glorious primaries yet remain original - all have witty dialog, and the players deliver tremendous performances. Don't See this film to be artistically challenged, but if you want to be entertained and to have a rye simle at what people might look like in a simpler universe, give "Hudson Hawk" a try ;-)

Summary: GOOD Grins
Review: OK, so it's not high drama. But the critics need to get a clue. This is a fun flick. The music is great, and it fits. It borders on slapsitck from time to time, but manages to to miss it by a hair. The music as a timing device is very clever, and makes it all work.

Summary: If I hated it so much then why do I keep watching it?
Review: The first time I watched this movie I left the theatre angry and wondering what the hell was that. Then I saw it again on cable, then again and finally I bought the DVD and have watched it over and over. It is a silly action comedy that has a force of evil that will make you addicted to the movie. Is that so bad? Well at least I never went for the candy bar nicknaming of my friends but I did watch Bunny fly out a window over and over again. Is it a great movie, no but if you do not take it seriously it can be a fun one. I have to give credit to a movie that uses sounds from "In Like Flint" and has Sylvestor Stallone's brother. "The man knows, the man knows."

Summary: Skipping rocks
Review: So what I'm seeing here is this: the "professional" critics hated this movie-- berated and slandered it to the masses and to this day chuckle at its mere mention. It is categorically rated as one of the worst movies of all times. But the actual PEOPLE who watch it? They LOVE it!

I used to watch this over and over again on VHS, back when it first came out. That was years ago, but I can still remember every scene. The music was terrific, the style was incredible... this was a classic, and it got reamed. Why? Because the critics are paid to look at a movie, determine whether it fits the "formula" and bash or praise it.

I think that Bruce Willis himself summed it up best. When faced with the overwhelming criticism of the film, he replied, "Hey, I've made enough money that I could sit by a lake and skip rocks for the rest of my life and still be happy." As for me, "Hudson Hawk" was one of the biggest influences on my own writing. Great job, Bruce! You have a fan for life.

Summary: Hudson Hawk is a lite hearted romantic spy spoof.
Review: Bruce Willis and Danny Aiello lead a excellent cast in a very enjoyable "It Takes a Thief" / "James Bond" spoof with witty dialog , romance and "Mission Impossible" gadgetry. James Coburn also throws in some excellent "Our Man Flint" character. You don't have to think hard, no one try's to force thier political or social agenda down your throat, just sit back and enjoy a fun movie highlited by some beutiful Italian sites. The movie has some very minor language and is otherwise fit for all family members.

Summary: THANK YOU!
Review: For years, I thought I was the only person who liked this movie. The fact is, people were (and still are) brainwashed by critics. Don't follow the herd, people! Give it a try.

That's not to say the movie is perfect. People call it a "vanity project" for Willis, and bemoaned the performance by Aiello, but they were, without a doubt, the most convinving "buddy" pairing on-screen in years. The fatal flaw that almost makes the movie bog down is Andie McDowell. She was terribly un-funny (the scene where she "talks to the dolphins" is painful to watch). However, the rest of the cast more than makes up for it. And it was great to see James Coburn back in a comedic setting!

Also, the music in this movie was great! I played MP3's of Willis and Aiello doing "Side by Side" and "Swing on a Star" for some friends recently, and they were dying to know who recorded them so they could get the album. Imagine their surprise when I told them the artists.

All in all, this movie is far better than the Hollywood establishment would lead you to believe. If you went in expecting a "Die Hard"-like experience, you were in for a sizable surprise. But, if you went in expecting screwball, zany comedy, this movie definitely served up the cappucino!

Summary: This is the reason I respect Bruce Willis
Review: Don't you dare believe the hype! "Hudson Hawk" stands as one of the most truly humorous films of the early '90s.

Keep in mind that the movie isn't about thwarting world domination (it's got it though) or finding romance (it's there too!); "Hudson Hawk" is really a tale focused on Hawk's quest for a cappucino (no really!!). If you keep this one detail in mind while viewing the whole movie makes a lot more sense.

"Hawk" also features one of the most blatantly Deus ex Machina endings I've ever seen to hilarious effect: "Can you ****ing believe it?!" "Yeah, I can believe it."

Summary: Oh, get over yourselves
Review: I hate stupid movies. Mel Brooks annoys the hell out of me. But I like, nay, LOVE Hudson Hawk. One of the few movies not directed by David Lynch that constantly leaves you thinking "What the f___?" in the same way that "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas" leaves you thinking "What the f___?" It's an acid-soaked Catholic caper with snappy dialogue and great Bond-esque one-liners. You just have to let go of sanity and roll with it. As for the all-knowing movie gods who panned this scategorical masterpiece, what do they call you, Ig and Ook?

Review: I cannot believe there are actually people out there who like this movie. It would be the worst film I have watch in decades.
