Summary: A wonderful movie!
Review: I enjoyed this movie very much! Some things were different in the movie than what the book had. But, for the most part the movie was an exciting yet sad action packed film. The actors did a great job portraying the charcters! I reccomend this movie to anyone that has read the novel or heard about it!

Review: While not as true to the book as it could be, (Hollywood has a knack for ruining perfectly good books) this movie does portray some scenes extremely well. Although it still leaves something to be desired, it's good to see if you've read the book or seen the original black-and-white version, which follows the story line much more clearly.

Review: This is the 1990 version of Golding's Nobel Prizewinning novel. See also the 1960's black and white movie, which is more faithful to the novel.Filmed at Frenchman's Cove on the island of Jamaica, this scenic movie tells the story of a group of American schoolboys marooned on a desert island during a war. Balthazar Getty, who is the grandson of the mega-tycoon J Paul Getty, plays Ralph. He's the sensible boy who tries to organize a society based on the school' rules so that they can set signals and be rescued. His nemesis is Jack, the pretty blond played by Chris Furrh, who forms a group of hunters. These boys want to have fun hunting, and don't want to be rescued. The boys rapidly descend into savagery. What little civilization they have goes away. At the climax, the hunters kill Simon (Badgett Dale) in a horrific accident. Simon represents the man in the wrong place at the wrong time, or innocence destroyed. The boys also set the island on fire, destroying their home in the process. Lots of boys running through beautiful scenery wearing only torn Jockey shorts and war paint. More action than the 1960 version, but less plot. Still, if you have to study the novel at school (and many schools use it for literature class), this movie will help you understand the novel. Not that this novel is easy to understand, what with all its themes: good and evil, friendship and betrayal, anarchy and organization, the thin line between civilization and chaos. END

Review: Ralph is sooooo hot! i love him. he really made the character good. i love him. he is my favorite character!! i would love to be stranded on an island with him!! and the movie was the best i've ever seen. BUY IT!!!

Summary: Mixed results
Review: A group of boys, ages seven or so to thirteen or so, from an American military school, are stranded on a tropical island, during the outbreak of some kind of war, when their plane crashes. They have food, water, a moderately benign climate (except for an occasional, blow-everything-down storm), and they have each other for company. What will they do? Have an extended vacation? Do what they can to get themselves rescued? Degenerate into savages and make war on each other? The answer is both fascinating and chilling.
I have now read the book, seen the 1963 movie, and seen the 1990 movie, in that order. The 1963 movie is a Black-and-White, low-budget-looking piece with some notable omissions from the book, but is generally a faithful adaptation of William Goldings novel. It is ominous, depressing, dark, and sad.
This 1990 version is an attempt to update the story. The boys are from an American military school instead of a British private school. The slang is somewhat updated, but already becoming obsolete, as are the popular culture references made by the boys (e.g., griping about not being to watch "Alf" on television. There are some deviations from the Golding novel: one adult survives the crash -- the pilot; Jack and Ralph are friends at first; all the boys are cadets here, whereas the boys are in two separate groups, right from the start, in the novel and older film.
Balthazar Getty plays Ralph, the more mature, civilized, prosocial leader in this gfilm, but James Aubrey's Ralph, in the older film, was stronger and more charismatic. But, Chris Furrh's Jack (1990) was better than Tom Chapin's Jack (1963).
This version would be better identified as "loosely based on" the Golding novel, although it became more faithful, toward the end. The setting and cinematography are very good, though.

Summary: Enjoyed very much both editions of Lord of the Flies.
Review: This new edition is in color and takes place on a beautiful island. Mr. Getty's performance as Ralph is excellent. If you have enjoyed the original movie you'll like this version. It's all there, same plot, only this time they are American boy's from a military academy. Where as the original movie had boy nudity in it, this version has them down to wet underwear, with expected results. There is a lot of eye candy here, and I think this version is a little easier to get into than the black and white version of the 60's. If you are studying Lord of the Flies, I would suggest sticking with the book. Both movies simplify the book. If you read the book then watch the movies, you will understand the meaning of several scenes you probably missed. There is a lot of emplied sexuality in both the book and the movies.

Summary: Lord of the Flies
Review: I bought this DVD the other day and watched it. It's very beastly, and the words those boys say are foul. I wouldn't recommend this for children under 14. It's a good movie, but definately for adults only. It's about boys being stranded on an island by themselves, only with one adult who's ill after their arriving there. Later one of the children accidentally kill the adult thinking he's the 'monster' in the cave. Now the children are left alone to fend totally for themselves. Jack, being the leader of the whole group, except for Piggy and Ralph, becomes evil and steals Piggy's glasses while they are tired and sleepy. Only so that he can make fire with the glasses, and feed his group of boys. Piggy gets killed by Jack's group of boys, and Ralph is left totally alone. The next morning Ralph wakes up to the smell of smoke, the jungle is on fire, set by Jack's group, to 'hunt Jack out of the jungle'. Jack runs for his life, with music blasting, only to get you on the edge of your seat, then he falls at the feet of the U.S. Marines. Rescued, just in the nick of time! This movie was good, but very hurried, it got too involved to quickly, even before you knew all the character's names. This is definately not a 'kids night' movie. Full of cursing, killing, and evil, you would have to watch it to know what I mean.
