Summary: Great Sci-Fantasy film,
Review: This Movie finally gets what it deserves, a DVD release. Now I never liked the video game or its characters, but this movie is a sure fire hoot. meaning its funny -- a comedy, it has action -- an action movie, and it is loosely science fiction. The exact three genres I particularly like in movies. One point that should be mentioned, it has a romantic flavor to it; Luigi and Princess Daisy start to develop a relationship that would have continued if Disney/ Hollywood Pictures would have developed a sequel to this great picture. The video game would have been much, much, much more interesting if the plot and design would have been like the movie.

Summary: Where Are The Special Features?
Review: Buyer Beware: When purchasing a cheap DVD, don't bother looking for the access to special features on the DVD menu. You won't have any luck finding them anywhere. I was about to give this DVD a one star rating, but due to the fact that Super Mario Bros. has to be my all-time video game-based movie, I didn't have the heart to give it one star. But, at least the movie is in Widescreen format that's one good thing about it. There are many viewers that might have disagree with me, but that is only because they might believe that the movie plot was not what they would expect. But I can understand why at the beginning this movie didn't work for Mario fans due to the fact that it wasn't true to the video games. But as time passed, people grew to understand the movie a little better. Basically, the movie is about a parallel universe where dinosaurs have seemed to evolve into a more primal species, like us, mostly. And then we meet Mario and Luigi, Brooklyn's all time famous plumbers who are on a quest to save a princess from a reptile lizard king, known as King Koopa. The soundtrack to Super Mario Bros. is great, the special effect it great, and the movie has left us wondering where do they go from here? But you wanna know why there hasn't been a sequal since '93? Because the filmmakers are afraid since the movie bombed in the past, that viewers won't come to appreciate the sequal enough. So they figured it would be best to stick with the first one. But you never know, it could come back anytime soon. Look at the Terminator movies: they had waited about ten years later to do third sequal, so cross your fingers, and hope for the best that someone might have the guts to write the sequal that could sweep the nationwide with moviegoers everywhere.

Review: I'm not going to lie to you: Super Mario Bros. is a VERY bad movie. Then again, I'm not going to display my arcane knowledge of geekdom by throwing a bunch of dissimilarities between the movie and the games at you or go into a long spiel about what a waste of a film reel this box office bomb was, either. It can generally be agreed upon by the majority of tasteful movie-going audiences that this isn't worth viewing even from a distance of several thousand feet. The Mario Bros. should be left to the likes of Nintendo and Captain Lou Albano. Why is that? Judge for yourself.The movie follows Bob Hoskins and John Leguizamo (as Mario and Luigi, respectively) as the latter chases the girl of his dreams into an alternate dimension only to find that she is the princess of this parallel world in which man evolved from dinosaurs instead of apes. Don't leave yet, it gets better. I said I wouldn't point out the discrepancies, and I won't, but as a fan of the old-school games, the lack of even a vestige of what makes the games classics brings this movie down. I doubt if anyone has the creative chutzpah to turn the NES platform games into an effective movie; certainly Buena Vista did not. Names of heroes and enemies alike are stolen and manhandled by the worst form of creative license. Establishments are named after locales in the games with only the names - and none of the spirit - intact. Sure, they play the music from the first Super Mario Bros. at the beginning as the story is explained, but does that mean the creators know any of the material they're working with? Not at all. Dennis Hopper, Bob Hoskins, Samantha Mathis, and Fisher Stevens are all fools for taking serious dramatic roles in this bomb - only John Leguizamo seems to have made a full recovery from this temporary (for him) setback. The point is that it is based on a video game, and it is not so wrong to expect something that at least resembles the game in some aspects. As it is, SMB turns the whimsy and creative flights of fancy of the video games and compresses them into a macabre vision of a dystopian parallel universe that has no place in the confines of the revolutionary platformers' legacy. Not worth watching in the slightest, even if you have been under a rock since 1985 and have no clue what Super Mario Bros. is at its core.

Summary: Actually not that bad...
Review: Well, to start this off, I confess that I am a bad movie officionado. Watching bad movies is my beloved hobby. So when I heard that the Mario Bros. live-action movie had come to DVD, I decided to give it a shot. I bought a copy, popped it into my DVD player and sat back.
My first impression was that this Movie would be painful. VERY painful. However, as the film progressed, I realized that the acting was good, the special effects were convincing enough, and the storyline was.....fun. It ain't Braveheart, but there are far worse films, and worse Live-action Video game conversions. At worst, it's watchable. At best, it'll have you laughing.

Summary: An Adventure 65 Million Years In The Making
Review: On a remote island called "Dinohatten", a wealthy entrepreneur (King Koopa) and his team of scientists develop a means of bringing dinosaurs to life using DNA, taken from dinosaur blood which has been preserved inside insects encased in amber.
King Koopa secretly creates a theme park showcasing these dinosaurs (Koopa Troopas), with dreams of making millions from curious spectators. Before opening the attraction to the public, King Koopa invites two plumbers, Mario and Luigi (the Super Mario Bros.!), and their friend Princess Daisy to experience the park. Hoping to calm anxious investors, King Koopa gives the group full-access to the island.
However, their visit to the park is anything but tranquil, as the park's security system breaks down, King Koopa and the Koopa Troopas break out and take Princess Daisy hostage. It's up to Mario and Luigi to save her and the Mushroom Kingdom from this tyrant. Fortunately for Mario and Luigi, before they went off to battle the Koopa Troopas, they used the secret code that gave them both 99 lives. And they'll need every one of them to defeat the mightiest Koopa Troopa of them all -- Bowser! First-class special effects, a solid script, and a talented cast help bring the excitement of the video game to life. "The Super Mario Bros." movie is one of the best movies based on a video game -- second only to "Double Dragon". If you've ever wanted to know the whole story behind the Mario Bros. Summary: Brooklyn Boys Rule
Review: Like Brooklyn guido-hero Tony Manero of Fever, Mario & Luigi give you something to cheer for in this goofy but fun movie. When I first saw this flick in 1993, I was a little dissapointed considering I was 11 and was sitting there constantly looking for video game comparisons (like why doesn't Luigi have a mustache and why is Koopa a human) instead of enjoying the movie for what it was: a good time. Now, ten years later I relived this film for the second time and now I love it! Let me tell you why. First of all, Hoskins ("Eddie Valiant" in Roger Rabbit) and Leguizamo ("Benny Blanco from the Bronx" in Carlito's Way) are absolutely perfect casting choices. Lou Albano and the other guy that played Mario and Luigi in the old live action TV show were good too but Hoskins and Leguizamo are far better. The special effects were cutting edge for ten years ago and I'm surprised it didn't do too well at the box office. The dinosaur characters were probably so apparant due to the Jurassic Park craze of the 90's and a lot of the dino creatures in Mario Bros look like they could have been in a Jurassic sequel. But nevertheless, the film was funny, easy to watch and enjoyable for a Wednesday night. The early scene when the bros and Daisy and Daniella (hotties!) are in the Brooklyn Italian restaurant chowing down on spaghetti, meatballs and garlic bread would make any goomba hungry. Great scenes include the waterslide-like pipe ride (which looks like a ball!) and the disco dance scene. Koopa's castle is an eerie Twin Towers recreation that is more appreciated now than when the film came out. It's the World Trade buildings with half of one tower demolished. I hope the DVD version offers a lot of extras.

Summary: The Super Mario Brothers movie is one of my favorite movies.
Review: The Super Mario Brothers movie is not only one of my favorite movies but I could watch it over and over and it would never get boring. If you are a Mario fan, this movie will not dissapoint you, in fact, this movie is very enlightning. This movie explains how the entire Mario adventures came to be. Not only a great cast, but one of the best movie origin movies ever made. I would say it ranks up there with Mortal Kombat. Anyone that says this movie isn't good, needs to watch it again. Everything from yoshi to toad is touched on in this movie. In my opionion, this movie should be re-released into the movie theaters and they should never stop showing it.

Summary: Ok - alternate universe. So?
Review: Why people are absolutely clobbering this movie, I don't know. As a guess, I would say that the title makes you think of the video games, but this is aboslutely *nothing* like the video games, be warned of that from the outset. However if (unlike many others) you can get around the fact that it is completely out of the ordinary for the mario universe, you'll be rewarded to find a great movie with a quite interesting story. I only dock this a star because of the expectations issue. This has no business having "Mario Bros." in the title, but otherwise highly recommended :)

Summary: Aaaagggghhhh! The pain! Oh the pain!
Review: The Mario games have always been a very sentimental piece of my life. Hopping and bopping through the mushroom kingdom, collecting coins, and so-on. Needless to say, when I saw this film I was apalled. How it ever made it onto DVD, I will never know. If the screensaver quality prologue at the start of the film isn't enough to scare you away from the movie, you'll soon notice that the film has very little in common with Sherigu Miyamoto's video game classic that it is named after. There are too many continuity issues to list in this short review, so I won't bother. But basically to sum up the film, if you drained Water World, filled it with weird half lizard-half human creatures and put two badly dressed italian americans in the middle of it you'd have Mario Brothers. If you are a die hard Mario fan, this film will deeply offend you. I wouldn't say it should be completely avoided, as it does offer a few un-intentional giggles, but the film itself it [not good]. It's worse than Double Dragon, Mortal Kombat, Street Fighter, Wing Commander, Resident Evil and Tomb Raider combined. Mario Brothers is the un-disputed king of live acted Video game movies gone terribly wrong.
