Summary: Solid action entertainment, pulling patriotic heartstrings
Review: An airman (Owen Wilson)Lt. Burnett, has just put in his request to leave the service, because he is bored doing routine flights over Bosnia Serbia. On his next flight he makes a wrong turn and ends ups capturing some digital camera footage that the bad guys don't want seen. So they fire heat seeking missiles at his jet and he ejects before it crashes. That's pretty much what you get from the trailers.

Gene Hackman plays an Admiral who is a Battle Group Commander of an aircraft carrier. He has to deal with a yo-yo higher up admiral who is willing to sacrifice Burnett for the sake of the fragile treaty. But the bad guys, who are trying to hunt Burnett down are lying through their teeth to the peace keepers, mercilessly kill his copilot and start chasing the surviving downed airman..

The story keeps a steady pace that maintains interest throughout the film(...)There are a few yards of experimental footage, where the camera shots are really jagged and bouncing. We didn't like it. It didn't seem to do anything except pull you out of the story and that's usually not a good thing. Of course it may have been that we arrived at the theater just in time and had to take a seat in the third row. That was not a bad sign, since the theater was filled.

My 95 year old Dad said he was going to see either this film or Spy Games. I suggested this one. I liked Spy Games better. It was smarter and a bit more complex. But this one, with it's more direct plot, without the flashbacks of Spy games, will be easier to follow. This film is also better for kids. Although there is enough war-oriented violence, it has no momentary flashes of nudity, which ruin some otherwise good films for kids (in my opinion as a parent of an 11 year old.)

Throughout the movie I was also reminded of the airman who got caught behind enemy lines for about a week, a few years ago. Apparently, this is not his story, but it added an interesting dimension to think about how there must have been some similarities between his experience and this movie. I had greater respect for him.

This was an enjoyable movie-- a good evening out-- but it was not a masterpiece. That's why I give it 4 stars.

Summary: THE MOVIE WAS GREAT!
Review: It was one of the best films I've seen in a very long time. Well actually, last weekend I was saying the same thing about Spy Game - it, too, was a great movie. I just got home from seeing Behind Enemy Lines and I feel it was one of the greatest films released. I don't want to give anything away about the film (...). If you like exciting movies with lots of action - this is the movie for you. It kept me on my toes throughout. I was surprised, however, because I think it's a lot (I mean very close) like Spy Game - almost identical plot just more action.

Summary: A Must see!

Summary: Not really Scott O'Brady
Review: If you like War movies , you'll like this. It has it's rather large share of action. Some is silly, like the lame speech by Gene Hackman. Some is quite gruesome. This is a very action packed thriller, and is a good first War film.

Gene Hackman is an OK General, but the best role is by Wilson as the hero. He is funny, witty, very physically fit, and an all around good actor. His nose though, he broke thrice on the set before shooting. I don't know who it is, but I like whoever played Stackhouse. Hero+Stackhouse=Witty Partners! The villains are very haunting.

Overall, when this film comes out on DVD this April, buy it.

Review: Movie was great. A bit of a far fetched ending, but still a great movie.

Summary: Doesn't strive to be more than mediocre
Review: In these times of war on terrorism, I have to admit its refreshing to see action films. Not that its superficially patriotic or anything.
The commercial makes the plot quite obvious. Owen Wilson (the goofy guy from shanghai noon and numerous other slapstick comedies) is now a pilot defending the U.S. from evil forces. Or so he wishes. It's around Christmas (as all war flicks) and Wilson and his co-pilot are bored out of their minds. They are in the adriatic on simple surveillance missions w/NATO forces to help keep the peace in the Balkans. It seems there is a peace process which NATO is eager to see through and the pilots are not to engage in combat. Of course this will all change. As Wilson and his pilot are on a routine mission, they spot some activity. The area is out of their jurisdiction but of course they check it out and take pictures too. Little do they know, they witness the infamous ethnic cleansing by the Serb army. They get shot down in the process, and Wilson must use his wits to survive.
News buffs will know this is loosely, and I mean loosely, based on the USAF pilot O'grady who was shot down over Bosnia and somehow managed to get out. I'm sure O'grady came close to death, but this movie is all out Jerry Bruckheimer, with Wilson dodging about 20 soldiers firing at him (not to mention tank shells). Of course the situations he gets into are rather implausible, and the movies filled with the dreaded action movie cliche, the one dimensional characters. Theres what i believe to be Christopher Lambert(or a look alike) as the NATO commander. NATO of course is supposed to be the U.S.'s ally, but in this movie, there the hardass gestapo who are just getting in our way b/c of their protocols/rules. This just takes the movie from semi-patriotic to the "America is right, the rest of the world is wrong" attitude. The script too is weak. They just stick with lines like "I think he hates us" "No, just you." and the usual "stand down or you'll be relieved!" Of course we also get the obligatory shootout and bodycount at the end. What could have been a smart film about what downed pilots go through, is just another music video. On the other, some of the Serb villains/Croatians were interesting. The sniper/hitman guy who follows Wilson (the type in movies who don't need a trail to know where they're going b/c they're inhuman) and the Westernized rebels are rather fun to watch.

Summary: how do they miss?
Review: typical hackman hash, with wilson serving as good foil. but with
firepower ranging from tanks to ak's to mines to missiles and more, how the heck does wilson escape with only a minor collar-bone wound? i realize that with the lead character dead there's hardly anyone left to take up the slack, but geez, the booby-trapped factory should have killed him three times at least, and the finale in reality would have found him swiss-cheesed with over a thousand rounds in his body.
a good noisy waker-upper on a friday afternoon.

Summary: Simply incredible!
Review: "Behind Enemy Lines" is a fast-paced thrillride, starring Owen Wilson and Gene Hackman. The nonstop action will pump up your adrenaline, and the special effects will leave your jaw hanging. If you liked "Saving Private Ryan" and like James Bond (one-man army sort of thing), you'll love this mixture of the two.

In short: You'll pay for the whole seat... but you'll only need the edge of it.

Summary: Gutsy, inspired perfomrances and sharp editing
Review: When I saw this movie, I was hesitant about its potential for flag-waving getting in the way of a good movie and the money it cost. However, this was gripping, the story was well done, the actors played their characters well, and the accuracy of the military system and hardware they use was pretty accurate.

Owen Wilson's character, a Navy F/A-18F backseater, intends at the movie to leave the service for something different. He questions America's role in monitoring a tense Bosnia- Herzegovina, and how it related to his training for war. On Christmas Day, he ordered to fly a mission with his pilot to oversee the cease-fire zone, and in the process finds evidence of civilian atrocities. He does this after straying into forbidden territory, and for his efforts he is shot down into hostile territory.

After seeing his pilot killed, he tries to outrun his pursuers, determined to kill him and destroy the evidence/ knowledge he has of what they were photographed doing. NATO politics and European political instabilty cause his rescuers, lead by Gene Hackman's well-played character of a US Navy admiral in charge of the carrier group, to have to call off his rescue. Wilson's desperation increases as a sniper robotically tries to find and kill him, resulting in Hackman's in-the-trailer decision to go in and save him whatever cost to his career may result.

Filmed before the Sept. 11 attacks, this is a really good depiction of America's military, and reaffirms why it is we sometimes take on difficult tasks to achieve world stability. The action sequences are very well done, and there were few flaws that could be spotted. This was very well done, and worth the cost of admission, the hot dog, the popcorn, and soda...
