Summary: Steven Spielberg never made a movie this good.
Review: OK, so I liked the Indiana Jones movies, but there was something about their attempt to provide a more modern version of the Saturday afternoon adventure serials and B movies that always proved false.
_The Rocketeer_, based upon Dave Stevens fantastic comic book of the same name is the true heir to these serials. In turn campy and sly, being faithful to the tradition of the B movies and serials whilst gently and lovingly mocking them is the true heir to these serial The Rocketeer manages to upgrade the serials with better looking heroines, badder bad guys, better good guys and of course Dolby sound and color. The score is one of James Horner's best and the soundtrack is as good as the movie, with the score and such classics as "When you're alone" and "Begin the Beguine". Check out the movie and the soundtrack, you won't be sorry.

Summary: Great movie
Review: Really enjoy this movie, reminds me of some of the old serial movies. The DVD in widescreen is very good , just wish they would have used 5.1 sound. The surrounds effects would have been much better. Did not see any deleted scenes as opposed to VHS version, as one earlier reviewer had noted. This is a good movie to just sit back relax and enjoy . Good family movie with no offensive language.

Summary: It's a bird, it's a plane...it's the Rocketeer
Review: Bill Campbell plays the clean-cut, aw-shucks pilot and Jennifer Connelly is his sweet, star-struck girlfriend in this comic strip tale of good vs. evil. It is set in the pre-WWII era, and only our stalwart hero can save America from Hitler; with a little spit and chewing gum applied to his rocket pack, Campbell destroys the Nazis! This is clean-cut fun told in a simpler style. The whole family can enjoy this move together!

Summary: Fun and Exciting!
Review: This is an exceptionally well-made movie. The sets, costumes, and music give it a sense of authenticity. The casting is excellent. There's no question about who's the good guy and who's the bad guy - and the bad guy is very, very bad!

Bill Campbell plays Cliff Secord, an amateur aviator who is up to his ears in debt and going nowhere in his career. Neville Sinclair (Timothy Dalton), a swashbuckling movie star and secret Nazi agent, overhears Cliff telling his girlfriend, Jenny Blake (Jennifer Connelly) about having found a rocket pack that will help to jump-start his career. Cliff uses the rocket pack at an airshow and the flying man - "The Rocketeer" - becomes the talk of the town, but the rocket pack is a Nazi invention and the Nazis want it back. When Sinclair kidnaps Jenny and holds her for the rocket pack, it's up to Cliff Secord to save his girl AND the world!

Alan Arkin turns in a fine performance as Secord's mentor. Watch for cameo appearances by actors playing Howard Hughes, Clark Gable, and W.C. Fields!

It's great entertainment with little objectionable language or material.

Summary: Correction
Review: ...Pretty good sound mix. The picture could be much better. It is shaky in some places. But Jennifer Connelly still looks great.

The movie feels like an old time serial that you used to see on Sat. mornings. It's clear who the good and bad guys are...Exciting, funny, romantic...Definitely a great movie!! I highly recommend it!!

Summary: This movie was a blast (no pun intended)
Review: In pure Disney fashion, The Rocketeer is a hearken back to traditional heroes of the old days. Based on a comic book with classic retro styling, it about a regular guy who is burdened with an extraordinary piece of equipment that gives him the ability to fly. Luckily he's a pilot. The story is solid, if not clichéd. In the late 1930's, a young pilot who is a winning hopeful for a plane race gets his hopes shot down when his plane is damaged. He and his top mechanic stumble on a jetpack. From there, things get going. Everyone seems to want this thing. The pilot soon finds himself, as well as everyone around him, in danger. Throw in The Nazis, a charming but snake like actor/villain, a large speechless bruiser, the mob and Howard Hughes (not the real man, just an actor playing him) and you have a busy movie that keeps a pace and riddles you with adventure. Joe Johnson is a great director, recently doing the 3rd Jurassic Park movie and making it a hit as well. His handling of this movie is well balanced. Bill Cambell, who plays the young pilot, is perfect as the hero in all his square jawed leather jacket glory. Jennifer Connelly, in one of her first screen appearances, is gorgeous and smart as his actress girlfriend. Alan Arkin plays his wise and brilliant mechanic. And of course you have to have a villain, in this case, it is James Bond...I mean Timothy Dalton, the former James Bond by the time this movie was made. He does a very good job of playing the villain in the traditional sense. No stretching of talent in this film, all actors are not required to strain themselves. The movie is fun to watch and never dull, good special effects lend to this as well. I recommend it although there isn't much on the DVD, but I doubt this will ever become a special edition 2 disc set, so go ahead and get it now.

Summary: Fantastic!
Review: "The Rocketeer" is one of my favourite films because it packs adventure, romance, history AND comedy, and does so masterfully. The plot is not one that would draw me in if simply written on paper, but it is so interesting and funny as a film. I especially enjoyed Timothy Dalton's role as an undercover Nazi (this is set in the 1930's) living in California as a famous movie star! It's a great film for all ages and all interests--it keeps you rooting for the good guys!

Summary: The EDITED Rocketeer
Review: I saw this movie in the theater and bought the VHS version as soon as it became available. In the meantime I had made substantial improvements to my home theater so when the DVD became available I ordered it with HIGH expectations!
WHAT I SAW WAS EDITED TO THE POINT WHERE ENTIRE KEY SCENES WERE ELIMINATED! If your home theater can play both VHS & DVD, then GET the VHS version. It's much more entertaining!!!!!!!

Summary: A huge letdown.
Review: I grew up with the various "Rocketman" serials that this movie tries to copy. I cannot put my finger on what is wrong with The Rocketeer--except that its not very exciting--but somehow the whole is less than the parts. It also falls far short of the comic book, a very clever & sexy re-tread of those streamlined days. Is it too camp or too dumb? I just don't know.

Not to say that shameless copying can't work. After all, Star Wars is nothing but Flash Gordon + Buck Rogers + lots of money. Despite what the other reviewers say, The Rocketeer is not only completely predictable, its just dull--and that's why, after spending a ton of money on it, Disney dropped the idea of a sequel.

On the plus side the effects are of the multi-million dollar variety, the movie had a truly beautiful advance poster and Jennifer Connelly's chest is breathtaking.

Summary: Rocketeer
Review: An excellent film, I saw it at my local cinema many years ago and the DVD format has brought it back to life! A lack of extras as always with good films, but it is made up by superb sound and visual quality. Jennifer Connoly looks as stunning as i remebered her from my teenage crush and ex-bond Tim Dalton again makes no mistakes in his performance! In other words he steals the show!! Oh an what happened to William Campbell?? He looked as if he had a great future ahead of him, maybe not such a smart move to give that rocket pack back!!
