Summary: Not Unflawed, But Still Superior To Most Action Films
Review: Despite a plot that strains credibility at times, AIR FORCE ONE is still a superior action film thanks to the always-reliable Harrison Ford and the steady hand of German director Wolfgang Petersen (DAS BOOT; IN THE LINE OF FIRE).Ford portrays President James Marshall, who has just given a speech decrying international terrorism and warning those that would use terrorism for political purpose, "Your day is over." But when a truly despicable Russian national (Gary Oldman) and his men forcibly take over the President's plane, holding not only his staff, but even more importantly his wife and daughter, as hostages, Ford is forced to take matters into his own hands. The result is not always plausible, and some of the special effects don't work quite as well as they should, but one cannot fault the film's pace or the tension and excitement inherent in the story. Ever since playing Han Solo in STAR WARS and Indiana Jones in RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK, Ford has developed into a leading man of the action genre--the thinking man's action hero. That aspect blossomed in PATRIOT GAMES, CLEAR AND PRESENT DANGER, and, especially THE FUGITIVE; and here in AIR FORCE ONE he gets to play the most important man in the world. He does it with considerable style. Glenn Close was also a cagey choice to play the first female vice-president, and she does this with incredible fortitude. William H. Macy and Dean Stockwell are equally fine in supporting roles as part of the President's staff. And Oldman, whose performance as Oswald in Oliver Stone's JFK was a miracle performance, is equally superlative as the villain, matching the Bruce Willis/Alan Rickman pairing in DIE HARD. Petersen's direction, despite some missteps, never allowed the film to sag; and Jerry Goldsmith's music score is appropriately patriotic without being sickeningly so, and always suspense-building. This is a film well worth watching. Don't miss it, especially if you're a fan of such situational thrillers.

Summary: a President you can respect
Review: Die Hard on a plane? No not exactly. What happens when Air Force One is taken over by terrorists? What happens when they threaten the First Lady and her daughter? Well you are Harrison Ford then you get mad and then you kick some terrorist butt. This is a slick, intelligent thriller. The cast is an incredibly talented pool of actors. Oldman is spectacular as always, the man was made to play bad guys. Fords performance is intense, torn between his presidental ideals and role as father and husband. The man seems to act and look presidental even when holding a machine gun. Wolfgang Petersen, who's latest film The Perfect Storm is killer, does a wonderful job of directing, keeping the action and the pace of the movie tight and keeping you on the edge of your seat. If you missed it at the theaters you owe it to yourself to see this film. If you are a fan of action flicks....well then you likely already own this.

Summary: Requires a suspension of disbelief
Review: Don't try to figure out just how many rounds of machine gun fire an aircraft can absorb without depressurizing and crashing. Just sit back and enjoy the story, for heaven's sake. We viewers are now always required to BELIEVE the stuff we're watching; most movies are made to entertain; few are made to educate. If you take Air Force One for what it is, a wholly impossible and improbably bit of acting and producing and directing, then you won't be disappointed. It's not trying to be Shakespeare, so don't try to judge it as such.
Harrison Ford plays a U.S. president who seems to have gotten his training in guerrilla warfare or at least as a member of the Green Berets. He single-handedly bests a band of Russian thugs who try to pull of a mid-flight takeover of Air Force One. Glenn Close is the VP who manages things from Washington. Stuff happens so fast in this action-thriller that you won't have time to wonder why the plane didn't crash within the first 20 minutes.
Top notch stuff, for what it's meant to be.

Summary: Ford's Best Work Since "Clear And Present Danger"
Review: Harrison Ford has certainly become the quintessential action hero. He started off in the mid - 1970s' as Han Solo in the "Star Wars" series. Then, his starpower went through the roof with the "Indiana Jones" trilogy. After a dry spell, he bounced back as CIA agent Jack Ryan in 1992's "Patriot Games" and its sequel "Clear And Present Danger". In the 1997 vehicle "Air Force One", he played an unlikely action hero - The President Of The United States". Ford is President James Marshall. He seems to be the embodyment of the American dream. He has a loving family, and seems to be the leader in the upcoming election now that he's captured a Russian general responsible for the death of millions. But that all changes when he announces that the United States will no longer negotiate with terrorists at a convention in Moscow. But that all changes on the flight back to Washington. A group of Russian terrorists led by Gary Oldman hijack Air Force One. When they threaten to kill, Ford is forced to choose between going against his policy or sacrifying lives of the passangers on board - including his wife and daughter. Nonstop action combines with convincing acting, especially by Ford, Oldman and Glenn Close as the vice president. In fact, Ford is so convincing, it makes you wish he was really president. Great film.

Review: It's going to take more than political scandals to turn President Harrison Ford yellow in the thrilling actioner "Air Force One". When Air Force One is hijacked by a team of Russian neo-nationalists, a courageous US President (Harrison Ford) will face his greatest decision: sacrifice his family and staff onboard or give in to the terrorist demands. "Air Force One" is an entertaining, action-packed thrill ride. Director Wolfgang Petersen combines red-blooded heroics and gripping suspense in this edge-of-your-seat thriller. Harrison Ford delivers a fine performance as a steadfast US President and Gary Oldman is astonishing as the terrorist leader. The cast also includes Glenn Close, Dean Stockwell and William H. Macy. The fast-paced storyline, stunning action scenes and special effects cover the holes within the movie's plot. "Air Force One" was one of the earliest DVD releases for Columbia. The film is presented in both 2.35:1 anamorphic widescreen and full screen formats. The DVD contains a surprisingly detailed video transfer with fine sharpness. The 5.1 Dolby Digital sound is spectacular and adds much energy to the film's score. Its supplemental material contains the theatrical trailer and audio commentary by director Wolfgang Petersen. Overall, "Air Force One" scores a "B".

Summary: Vote Early-Vote Often For This One
Review: Harrison Ford is the dream President. Playing the leader of the free world in Air Force One, he is as principled as Lincoln, as plain talking as Truman, as easy on the eyes as Kennedy and, as a former Medal of Honor winner in Vietnam, as ready to bash heads as any villain. Who wouldn't vote for this guy? Air Force One, a rousing thriller directed with exemplary proficiency by Wolfgang Petersen (Das Boot and In the Line of Fire), hits cruising speed with its first scene and never slows down. The movie pits Ford against a renegade Kazakhstan terrorist (Oldman, convincingly wild-eyed) who hijacks the presidential plane and holds a gun to the head of the First Lady (Wendy Crewson) and the 12-year-old First Daughter (Liesel Matthews). It is up to Ford, secreted down in the bowels of the jet when Oldman and his band of terrorists first take over, to outfox the hijackers and save his family and the other hostages onboard. Among those ably supporting him on the ground are Glenn Close, as the flinty Veep, and Dean Stockwell, who adds a touch of vinegar as an Al Haig-like ("I'm in charge here," he says) Secretary of Defense. But AF1 belongs to Ford. With his aw-shucks demeanor and air of unflinching moral rectitude, he is as close as we come in today's Hollywood to Gary Cooper.

Summary: Sky-high entretainment
Review: "Air Force One" is an intelligent and hugely entertaining film, perfectly paced and with some rivetting action sequences. Harrison Ford has the neccessary screen presence to play the US President with conviction, and if I lived in America I'd want to vote for this guy! And while it's a shame Gary Oldman always seems to end up playing the nasty villain, his character here is deeper than most movie bad-guys, and he is an exceptionally good actor - anyone who's seen "Leon" will know what I'm talking about. There are some dodgy bits, like the special effects at the end and the willful abandon of basic scientific laws, as mentioned by other reviewers, but on the whole this gets 5 stars for being a cracking two-hour thrill ride that never lets up. Serious issues are raised, characters who you thought might survive are unexpectedly executed (showing the brutality of terrorism) and there are some impressively long tracking shots which must have been very difficult to pull off. Watch this instead of "Con Air".

Review: This movie is in the Top list of the most STUPID movies of all time. Is tied with Independence Day, The Patriot an others. If you are givng 5 stars, think about it for a second PLEASE. The president saves the world with his hands. I'm anti commuist but I don't like the Anti communist messages that seem they re made for a Captain American Comic. Seriously. This movie is STUPID. Hollywood always convince peole with non-realistic stories (A movie can be far from the Truth but not THIS far!!!).1997 is too late to be still showing the communist Russias as the danger. But anyway, it worked. I didn't see it at the movies but in my mind I can see and listen the people cheering when Ford says "Get off my plane". Glenn Close and useles looks so funny here. The opposite to Cheney that is the one that controls the States today. I felt sick of the "daddy", "mr president",etc. I felt sick when I saw the way the terrorists got into the plain. And I felt sick when I saw the good old General (Like if we haven't had enough of those in movies related to any scene with a riffle assault) that knows that his boy can fight because of his experience in Vietnam (surprise, surprise...First time we see a Vietnam veteran in a movie fighting against communist forces). Please avoid this stupidity. The reason is simple. I said it before and I'll say again. This movie is Stupid
