Summary: James Cameron should have done it...
Review: Despite the hype and financial sucess, Spiderman was in fact one of the biggest disappointment among the Summer Blockbusters. Indeed, the action sequences and the special effects rank at the top (for people who complained that the CGI looks cartoon-ish, please refer to the "article" the film was based on.) At time it even seem far too graphic for younger viewers, though audiences would not expect anything less from the director of "Evil Dead". For just any pop-corn movie, I would've shrouded mu shoulders and say, "It was a good ride while it lasted". But this is a film which was suppose to define the vision of the original superhero. With it's history, a more engrossing or engaging characters development should shine as bright as the actions. the problem is, they don't. When Spiderman is walking around without his mask on or nor revealing his super power, the film comes to a stall. We see wooden boxes stacked together being blown around by wind instead of actors. Maguire is dull, and Dunst is just awkward. Their love scene together not only generate no chemistry or heat, the lines are equally laughable, if not put most of the audience to sleep. The infamous spider-kiss (where Spiderman was hanging upside-down tounging Mary-Jane) is anything but sexy, instead, it looked dirty, even disturbing. In fact, the only person in the film who actually deliver an adequate performance is Willem Dafoe's menancing overacting. Production-wise, it surely deserve more stars. But as a movie of whole, with a story that is already fully-developed, this Spider-Man fails on so many levels.

Summary: The start of something better
Review: Aiming squarely at the teen audience was clearly the right choice in terms of the box-office (where it left even "Episode II" in the dust), but I can't help feeling some depth has been lost in the pursuit of digital delight. And in the end, the effects don't look as real as they should (nor give us anything we didn't see in the trailers). Fortunately, "Spider-Man" is saved from being just another big-budget Hollywood blowout by the guileless performance of Tobey Maguire and the lightly humorous touch of Sam Raimi and his writers. A darker tone and a more complex story might have made this more interesting, but they can wait for any one of the numerous sequels which are undoubtedly well on their way. It isn't a great film, but it's an entertaining start to what should be a highly entertaining franchise.

Review: MUSTSEEMUSTSEEMUSTSEE! You must see this movie! It is one of the best action movies i've ever seen. Spider-Man for about 7 years now has been my favorite superhero. I use to watch the cartoon and wish I could do what he does. ^_^ I recommend this to anyone who loves Spider-Man or just loves good wholesome family oriented films. Ps: Toby Maguire is hot! i don't care who knows it! ^¿^

Review: The considerable promise for the comic book feel that former horror director Sam (Evil Dead) Raimi showed with his gonzo action thriller Darkman comes to fruition in what can be considered the best comic book movie adaptation since Superman, The Movie way back in 1978. Tobey Maguire's acting talents are more than capable of putting real humanity into Peter Parker as he goes from lowly nerd to your friendly neighborhood Spiderman, battling the Green Goblin along the way. Columbia/Tri-Star has packed the DVD with more goodies than one simple disc can hold, you get commentary, trailers, documentaries and lots, lots more. An essential for any Webhead, young or old.

The comic strip is the most popular in the world and now the films are hitting the big screen. It holds many records at the box office and made a huge $117 million in its opening weekend. There are now Spider-Man comic books, Films, Cartoon Films, Console games, merchandise and much more! This is now a franchise and nothing can stand in its way! The sequal Spider-Man II will hit the cinemas in 2004.

Summary: who am i? spider-BOY!
Review: it always amazes me how a movie studio can spend millions of dollars on a film and miss on so many levels. despite the hype and box office sucess of this film, it falls far short in terms of an artistic statement. it is obviously packaged for general audiences and like so many other productions of our time, this movie caters to the whims of our children at the expense of adults. this is NOT spiderman but spider-BOY. tobey maguire is much too short and boyish to portray a superhero MAN. he is barely taller than his co-star kirstin dunst and if anyone should get an oscar, it's her for pretending to love him. he is like every spoiled yuppie geek u might come across during business hours or catch playing hackysack at some state college campus. i cant believe that HE was the best one for the role. NO WAY JOSE! on top of that his acting is dull and stoic. there is barely a vibe of adrenaline to be found anywhere in this film. i didnt feel inspired to get behind one of my favorite comic book heroes whom i've loved for years. and as a fan of the serial, i feel jipped. the spider bite scene, which is supposed to be the turning point in the life of this character is passe and forgetful. i have other issues as well with this film. i think with better casting(notably maguire), and a more inspiring directorial vision, this story could've been a five star movie, instead, it's just another cgi moneygrabber.

Summary: A skeptic of comic-based movies surrenders...
Review: After being married to a comic book-crazy husband for just over 2 years, I had to surrender and admit that "Spiderman" was a great film. The story line was impeccable, and so were the special effects. There was just enough romance to keep the interest of my completely female brain. I was glad to see that the movie kept the moral aspect of "Spiderman" instead of turning it into a pop culture nightmare like some producers do. If you are a woman (or not) and are skeptical about watching/buying/renting this movie, I would recommend giving it a chance. At the very least, it will entertain you for a while.

Summary: OK, but could've been much better...
Review: Casting Tobey Maguire is the best thing about this movie; casting Kirsten Dunst is definitely the worst, ... just zero charisma, and her red hair is so blatantly fake it's not even funny. Uncle Ben and Aunt May are also played by underwhelming actors...after Maguire, only William Dafoe pulls his own weight here. The special effects were also second rate, especially compared with for example "Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon"---you often feel that you're watching a video game because they're so choppy and cartoonish-looking. The fight choreography is also lame...c'mon, in this day and age you could probably find better combat scenes in any 3rd rate B-movie with a fraction of this film's production budget! One nice thing about this movie is the political subtext: at the film's ending, we see Spidey swinging by an American flag atop a skyscraper while Maguire's voiceover recalls his Uncle's last lecture: "With great power comes great responsibility." A nice counterpoint to the post-9/11 Bush jingoistic warmongering, but probably will be missed by most viewers.

Review: There was plenty to enjoy in this film. The action sequences were good, and I felt that the character was treated fairly well. However, the CGI could have used a little more work, and the dialogue was actually quite bad. It wasn't a bad film. But it didn't really break any new ground. Better than the live-action Batman films by a mile, worse than the first Superman film. Also not as good as X-Men.

Review: The most popular film of 2002 is now on DVD. Spider-Man, which earned over $400 million at the box office, is now shattering records on DVD. Why? That's because it is an awesome movie. I liked the acting in it, and the special effects were cool, except for the computer generated blood, if you know what I'm talking about. I found this to be an extremely entertaining movie, and you can watch it over and over. It also comes with cool extras, including two music videos.
