Summary: an awesome superhero movie (the best, too)
Review: i've never seen a better superhero movie like this one for a long time. he goes to the museum with his classmates, he gets bitten by a spider that excaped from it's container, and bites him on the hand. later on he goes home and faints. then he wakes up the next morning and he is way stronger than he was and that he didn't need to wear his glasses. then he meets his best friend's dad who turns out to be the evil nemesis, the green goblin. i just love the story line. i don't know why some people hate this movie. what is there to hate? the only thing to hate is some of the actors they put in. like that guy who does the newspaper pics. they could've gotten somebody better.

Summary: DON'T BUY THIS if you already have the original disc!
Review: This disc does NOT include the teaser trailer to the original Spider-man movie, as was stated elsewhere. It is merely the teaser trailer for Spider-man 2.

This is the most shameless "make you buy a dvd you already have again" scheme I have seen yet. Sony doesn't even PRETEND that they're not ripping you off; they flagrantly flaunt that fact. All of the additional features are on a whole extra disc, which has its own regular bulky dvd case, included in a slipcase with the EXACT SAME dvd you already have, in the EXACT SAME packaging! It's a real middle finger to the fans. If they had included this bonus disc packaged with the new Superbit version, then at least you'd be getting something new, not re-buying what you already have. But no. They don't even try to disguise the fact that they're re-selling you the same disc you bought a year and a half ago.
Furthermore, the bonus features on the third disc are meagre and not worth it. The "sneak preview" of Spider-man 2 doesn't include any film footage you haven't already seen in the trailers.

My one-star rating reflects this shameless new DVD re-packaging, not the movie itself, which is excellent and would receive five stars on its own.

AVOID THIS DVD AT ALL COSTS IF YOU ALREADY HAVE THE ORIGINAL RELEASE!

Summary: Got Milk Money?
Review: While Spider-Man recieves high marks for being an almost perfect "comic book" movie, its third DVD incarnation is, nothing more than Columbia trying to milk more cash from a lucrative cow. The new bonus material for the three disc set amounts to nothing more than padded pre release material for Spider Man 2.

Average High School student, Peter Parker, (Tobey Maguire) gets bitten by a genetically altered spider, while on a field trip. Soon after, he develops powers and abilities like a spider.... The film is very faithful to its comic book story, with only minor differences, that don't matter much. Maguire is very good as Peter/Spiermam. He is able to balance the geeky dorkdom of Parker, early in the film, and the daring-do of our hero, quite effectively. The rest of the cast is good too (with one notable exception, more on that in a moment) Kirsten Dunst as love interest, Mary Jane Watson, gives her the proper amount of spunky-cuteness, (as she is in the comic book) without overkill. James Franko as Harry Osborne, Peter's pal, puts his best foot forward. Now for that notable casting exception, I thought the worst performance in the film was given by actor Willem DaFoe. As wealthy businessman and Spidey's arch enemy, Norman Osborne/Green Goblin, he was just doing his best to win an award for the person who could sound most like DeNiro from Taxi Driver. Now, I know the character is supposed to have a split personality, but I just didn't buy him in the role. It didn't help matters that the goblin costume looked like something out of the TRANSFOMERS. It looked and sounded better as described in the "making of the movie" book, than it did on film . A few bits of casting trivia. There is a fun cameo by actor Bruce Campbell in the film. Eagle eyed viewers will also spot Stan Lee, Spiderman's creator and actor Ted Raimi (The Director's Brother) in the film

Directed by Sam Raimi, the film is perfectly paced. As the first film in the series, there is a lot of ground to cover. and yet the film zips along at a good clip. As for the CGI and effects John Dykstra and his crew do some pretty cool stuff to make the "webhead " come alive. The action is nicely staged. Still the final battle could have had a bit more punch to it.

All of the extras on discs one and two are lifted from the initial DVD release in November 2002. "New" on disc 3 is either all the throw away stuff that didn't fit on the first two releses, or promo fluff for the second film. Most of it is repetative and boring. There are six featurettes that concern the first film. Subjects range from production design, how certain key scenes came together, how to wrangle spiders, to costume design, all of which, as I said earlier are discussed elsewhere at some point. "An Exclusive Sneak Peek at Spider-Man 2" is nothing more than a extra long "commercial" for the second chapter--nothing really is talked about with any depth. You would have to have been under a rock not to know what is discussed here. The Spider-Man 2 theatrical teaser trailer speaks for itself. Gamers may enjoy seeing the teaser trailer for the Activision Spider-Man 2 adventure for PlayStation 2. Those with DVD-ROM access can even play multiple levels from the upcoming game if they choose to do so. I will say this-the game looks like it's a lot of fun.

I was surprised that the powers that be didn't include the audio commentary from star Tobey Maguire, originally recorded "live" as an internet exclusive, now part of the second DVD Superbit release. I would have felt better about the Deluxe version, had that track been part of the proceedings. Buy this from those money hungry folks at Columbia--only IF you don't already own Spider Man on DVD--in any other form.

Summary: SONY LETDOWN
Review: I AM FED UP WITH COMPANIES DOUBLE AND TRIPLE DIPPING CONSUMERS INTO BUYING DVDS THAT ARE DIFFERENT VERSIONS OF THE ORIGINAL. IN THIS CASE WE GET NOTHING THAT WE REALLY WANT. SUCH AS THE "FREAKIN ORIGINAL TEASER TRAILER!!!" I WAS TRICKED AGAIN INTO WASTING MY MONEY INTO BUYING SOMETHING I THOUGHT WAS "SPECIAL" OR "DELUXE" BUT THERE ISN'T ANYTHING DELUXE ABOUT THIS 3 DISC SET. IF YOU HAVE THE ORIGINAL SET SAVE YOUR MONEY. THOSE COWARDS AT SONY STILL DON'T HAVE THE BALLS TO GIVE US WHAT WE WANT LIKE DELETED SCENES WITH THE WORLD TRADE CENTER OR AT LEAST THE TEASER TRAILER.

Summary: Best Price at Best Buy
Review: Subject: Your Amazon.com Order From: orders@amazon.com Just saw this today (6/1/04) during lunch at the local Best Buy store for only [...]. Most on-line places are charging a lot more, and just to make sure I wasn't mistaken, it is also at www.bestbuy.com for this price!en Goblin,is awsome in his role, but coudn't they Let him develop amnesia, like in the comics, before they Killed him off?James Franco, the Goblin's son,is stunningly similar looking to Dafoe.Kirsten Dunst is fine in her role, but that red hair is so fake looking. All in all this is a great movie For people of all ages.I am looking foward to the sequel.night rental is the best I can give the movie.

The DVD - Well, first things first, the video and the sound are top notch. I won't knock it on the A/V quality. The picture has a 3d look to it and it's very vibrant and the soundfield comes alive in many places of the movie. However, the extras are lacking. This whole DVD (much like the actual movie) feels very rushed. You get some fluff material and some music videos, but nothing of real value.

Overall, I'd only reccomend a buy on this if you're a die hard comic book fan or spiderman fan. Other than that, it makes a great rental, but not a great buy.ade Center towers. Personally, I would have liked to have seen this in the movie, as kind of a memory or tribute to the WTC.

Summary: best superhero movie ever
Review: The cast was fantastic bringing human emotion to what could have been a dumb effects-driven piece of fluff (anyone remember the last batman movie?) This movie had great pacing and detailed characterizations. the special effects were very dynamic if at times a bit cartoonish. the spirit of stan lee and steve ditko's creation of some 40 years ago remains intact with a minimum of updating to be contemporary. the bonus features are worthwhile and this is a must own for fans of the character, the genre, or general fans of action films. highest recommendation.

Summary: Ask Yourself......Is This Double Dip Really Worth It???
Review: As many of you know, this dvd was released back in November 2002. It sold a whole lotta copies and we were happy with it. Personally, I bought the boxed collection with the Kevin Smith/Stan Lee dvd and all the other Spidey-Goodness. Now this "Deluxe" dvd release is on the horizon. And it's release is just in time for Spider-Man 2's AMC/Cinemark/any movie theatre chain domination.

Now about the dvd. IT HAS THE THEATRICAL TEASER!!!!! Back in July 2001, an awesome teaser to rival ID4 was shown in theaters and on-line. It was soon pulled from all media forms due to world events. It was basically done out of respect. Now the complete trailer is included on a THIRD DISC. This is the same dvd you bought in 2002. It is packed now with a pretty cool outer-sleeve to hold the WIDESCREEN version of the movie and the supplemental disc. This third disc is just some extra things to get your Spider-Man 2 fix 4 weeks early. You even get a movie ticket to see the flick on June 30th. That and you get all the video game demos and press kit vids to keep you happy.

So if you want that TEASER (Like me. I Thought it was the best trailer for a movie in the past 5 years), then get it. Plus, you get a movie pass. It balances out in the end IMHO. I just hope we don't get the "Extra Crispy" V.I.P. Edition anytime soon that includes a blindfold, tassells, and the alternate ending with Hayden Christensen next to Peter at the cemetary!

Summary: Impressive Film and Impressive Kiss
Review: Creative outlook on a superhero with a few changes. All the characters in this movie had great on-creen chemistry. A great cast, a great script and a good directort are all very important to making a good story. This movie has heart, charm, and warmth as well as gracefully sweeping aciton and hi-fi explosions.

Peter Parker was perfectly cast by Tobey Maguire who was able to show the angst a reserved high-school kid felt trying to fit in as a regular high schooler as well as learnign to adapt to his new powers. Like his uncle Ben stated, "With Great Power comes Great Responsibility." Most people doubted his casting as he doesn't seem like the "superhero" type, but once he committed to buffing up for the part, many of us (us girls anyway) took notice and changed our minds.

I was at first doubtful of Kirsten Dunst's ability to pull off Mary Jane after watching her in that puffy cheerleader flick "Bring it On", but she was able to bring a sweet vulnerability to a Mary Jane infatuated with Spiderman without making her seem too sappy. A kiss is everything, and who thought of the idea of an upside down kiss in the rain? Classic and original.

Wilem Defoe was a pleasant surprise as the green Goblin and switched quite easily from mangeable to madness. Very convincing and menacing.

I loved Aunt May and Uncle Ben. They suited each other quite well. The on-screen chemistry all around just worked. That's what made this a great film.
