Summary: The best movie of 2003!, truly a must see.
Review: The Italian Job gets it right on all fronts. One great cast featuring Mark Wahlberg as Charlie, "Transporter" Jason Statham as Rob, and other greats. It also marks the return of Edward Norton who let many people down, including me in "Death To Smoochy" as the villain, and boy is he ruthless. If the cast ain't one reason to see it, the action is incredible. The scene with the mini-coopers is fantastic. Also you get some great comedy along the way including Seth Green in a variety of funny moments. For great action this year, firget the Matrix Series, and see The Italian Job. It rules!

Summary: Stylish and slick modern caper flick
Review: Mark Wahlberg and Charlize Theron continue to cement themselves as great modern film stars in "The Italian Job," and are ably supported by a quality cast -- including Seth Green's best non-Buffy role to date -- in this remake.

Like all great caper flicks, the film puts an emphasis on cleverness, and the tricks and twists are all top-notch, with even the signature use of the new Mini Coopers being both incredibly plausible and, yes, very clever. When things go wrong, they go wrong because of human fallibility and bad luck, instead of cumbersome and artifical plot complications.

With the surprising exception of Donald Sutherland, the cast all are at the top of their respective games in this, and ego-driven scenery chewing is almost entirely absent, and even the hints of romance are nicely underplayed, taking a logical second place to the revenge-driven caper itself.

The film rates only 4 stars due to direction that sometimes fails to keep the film as tense and taught as it perhaps ought to, but it still ranks as one of the smartest and most charming action/adventure movies in years.

Strongly recommended for fans of "The Sting," "Ocean's 11" and fans of Seth Green.

Summary: Pop the popcorn and kill 90 minutes
Review: You'll enjoy "The Italian Job" if you take it for what it is: a summertime caper movie. It will entertain you for an hour and a half, but there's really nothing you'll take with you.

All the actors are fairly unique and fun to look at. Mark Wahlburg is the brains of the bunch, but he's sensitive too. Jason Statham stands out as "Handsome Rob" who is a wheelman as well as a ladies man. Charlize Theron holds a subdued beauty and confidence in this film.

However the characters are not larger than life like the characters in Snatch or Oceans Eleven, but they also don't try to be authentic like characters in The Score or Spy Game. This middle ground approach leaves the characters a little bland and forgettable.

The plot is fair, though it is a little predictable. There are heists and double-crosses. Much of it is a setup for the stunts, which are pulled off well and don't show any major flaws. The Mini Coopers are fun to watch.

However, the plot is also a setup for heavy product placement, including the Mini Coopers, several Napster references, and a prominent Pepsi truck used in one of the stunts.

I liked that this film did not rely heavily on profanity or violence. None of the protagonists used weapons, and I cannot recall any of them swearing. The biggest laugh of the film for me was when a 400 pound gangster called another character a "mother freaker." It has a PG-13 rating because Edward Norton whacks a couple guys with guns.

I recommend this movie if you're looking to kill 90 minutes, but don't expect a lot of brain work or redeeming value.

Pros:
-simple, straightforward, fun caper movie
-no profanity
-the heroes use no weapons (besides a fist)
-directing is clean; no major flaws

Cons:
-cliched and predictable
-heavy product placement
-won't leave you with any redeeming value beyond pure entertainment

Summary: Excellent
Review: The action never stops! Even more importantly, the filmmakers managed to avoid the blood &/or sex scenes normally associated with this type of movie.

Summary: The Italian Job- "It's Over When I Say It's Over"
Review: The Italian Job, is a clever and sophisticated caper. Nice cars, nice actors, nice settings, pretty much everything you'd like and want to see in a good movie. Mark Wahlberg stars as the main character, Charlie Croker, a pro at what he does: stealing. He's an excellent thief, and the main planner for a crew of theives including, Mos Def, Seth Green, Jason Statham, Edward Norton and Donald Sutherland. The opening of the film starts in Venice with a smart heist in process. When the thieves have gotten what they wanted: 35 million dollars in gold bars, one the theievs (Edward Norton) double-crosses them and makes it off with the gold and kills Sutherland's character in the process. Wahlberg soon recruits Charlize Theron (Sutherland's daugther) to help get revenge for their mentor and her father and to try and get possession of the gold back.
The film's premise is simple but cleverly done. I for one never knew being thief could require so much dedication and devotion. The main highlight of this film is the climax: the car chase involving those beloved mini-coopers. I don't think this film had the best car chase considering there were other films with a lot better chases including T3:Rise of the Machines, Bad Boys II and The Matrix Reloaded. Though it is pretty good and worthwhile. I luckily got to see this on the big screen and it actually is worth it. The DVD has some good features, including a lot of behind-the-scene featurettes.
The Italian Job is rated PG-13 for Violence and Some Language.
The violence includes bloodless gunplay and some fistfights. The language is occasional but not too strong. See it!

Summary: Pretty darn good, great cast
Review: A group of con-men steal a safe containing 35 million dollars worth of gold bricks (pretty elaborately) but when one of their own (Edward Norton) turn on them and takes the gold for himself, they fake their deaths and vow to track him down and get their gold back. Not the first time this story has been written, but who cares? It's funny, it's intelligent, it's fast-paced, and has a great cast (Mark Wahlberg, Edward Norton, Charlize Theron, Seth Green, Donald Sutherland, and more)- Along the same lines as Ocean's Eleven. I'm gonna add this one to my collection.

Summary: Remake that's not a Remake
Review: The 2003 Italian Job is every bit as good as the original, combining great action, a good cast and some really witty lines. That said this is not a remake, the story is totally different and the italian connection is shakey, more a distant excuse to use the same name.

The similarity is in the genre, the style of humor which is the spirit of the movie and the real stars of the film - thirty four Mini Coopers which are glorious.

The action scenes which are excellent, are made even better somehow by the fact the cast performed the vast majority of the stunts themselves. The scenes featuring the Mini Coopers (the modern version of the cars used in the original movie)and the armoured car were incredible. As an aside there were also a couple of scenes featuring an original mini cooper as used in the original movie, the contrast in the modern and classic versions is quite striking.

The cast are all very good, my particular favorites being Seth Green for being brilliantly funny, Jason Statham for pure cool and Edward Norton the villan for being the best actor by far. Oh and don't forget Charlize Theron for being many things and all of them great.

Overall this is a fun exciting action movie with a lot of laughs thrown in, overall for most people including me that is a pretty attractive package.

I would also recommend watching the original 1969 version, it still stands up as a movie well worth watching.

Summary: Great action movie with excellent cast
Review: The Italian Job is an excellent action movie that never slows down from beginning to end. A team of thieves rob $35 million in gold from a house in Venice and attempt to make their way to safety. Along the way, one of the team doublecrosses the others, taking the gold and leaving them for dead. A year later, the surviving team members have reunited to take down their ex-partner who is now living in a swanky house in Los Angeles. From there on, the movie follows their efforts to get the gold back as well as exact revenge on the traitor. This was a great summer movie with plenty of action. It's refreshing to see a stunt done in a movie without any computer generated images. The chase at the end with the Mini-Coopers is great as is the original heist in Venice. This is a very exciting movie with an excellent cast that is a thrill ride throughout.

The cast for the movie is very good. Mark Wahlberg stars as Charlie Kroker, the team leader trying to get the gold back. He basically plays himself, but he is cool doing it, so who cares? Charlize Theron is beautiful as always, while also turning in a fine performance as the daughter of one of the team members who must now work alongside them to recover the gold. Edward Norton is also very good as Steve, the traitor who turns on the group for all the gold. The team of thieves include Seth Green as "Napster", the computer genius, Jason Statham as Handsome Rob, the driver, Mos Def as Left Ear, the demolitions expert, and Franky G as Wrench, the mechanic. Donald Sutherland also makes a brief appearance as the mastermind behind the robbery and is very good. The DVD offers the widescreen presentation, several TV spots, plenty of making of featurettes, and six deleted scenes. The Italian Job is a great movie with a very good cast that should not be missed. Go check out The Italian Job!

Summary: Good Action!
Review: The Italian job is another antihero bank robbing gang movie. But this one does it very well. The short and sweet of it is you have a group of guys that are planning to rob a safe out of someone's house in Italy. After they successfully pull the job off, one of them turns on the rest of the group, steals all the money and gold and ends up shooting the senior most "this is my last job and I'm retiring" member played by the veteran Donald Sutherland. The rest of the movie is spent trying to chase down the member who stole everything and get there gold back along with a little payback. The acting is good, the action and dialogue is smartly done and keeps me very interested. I definitely liked this movie and I think if you're an action and or crime/bank job drama fan you will enjoy this DVD. Go pick it up!
