Summary: Stunning
Review: Wow. I'd seen the original American cut of this film 3 or 4 times since it was released in 1988. I just saw the director's cut on the big screen for the first time and it was amazing. It clocks in at almost an hour longer than the original version. Personally, I like the Eric Serra soundtrack included in this version over the Conti one that was released in the states. There's a synergy between the editing and the music that works for me. Serra & Besson have worked together on more than 6 films, so the relationship between the visuals and the music is just right.

Summary: The Most wonderfully Enchanting Movie Ever
Review: I fell in love with this beautiful movie the first time I ever saw it. A long movie? Never long enough. I have been searchig for this movie for a long time. It has always been SO hard to come by. If you buy 1 movie, buy this one. It will change your life.

Summary: A Great Story-But Not Entirely True!
Review: I have seen both versions of this film. Honestly, I like Conti's score better in the U.S. release, but the long version is best. When I saw the film, I already knew there was a person named Jacques Mayol and thought it was based on a true story. I loved the film so much I wanted to know more about the subject matter. Then recently I purchased Jacques Mayol's book, HOMO DELPHINUS-The Dolphin within Man, in it he describes his life and expresses his beliefs. It also has a section about the film in which he points out, only a few parts were somewhat accurate, the fact that he dove in a lake in the mountains of Peru to test altitude and how it affects his ability to slow his heartbeat, which he calls "apnea", is true. It is this phenomenon and other experiences with dolphins that truely drives Mayol. Mayol agreed to let his name be used in the film and Besson adapted some of Mayol's persona into the "story " which we all have enjoyed up to now. In my opinion, the long version of this film is a masterpiece, it has a special place in my heart. But if you really want to know more about the real Jacques Mayol and his story I suggest you buy his book. He shares all facets of his life and comments generously on the film. Maybe someday the real story will be told, because it is just as mystical and beautiful as the film. I can't wait to get my copy of this gorgeous, yet soulful film on DVD. Get it you won't be disappointed! It truely is a treasure from the deep!

Summary: The Big Blue Magic
Review: I'm a little bit lucky to have watched The Big Blue on the big screen twice - one long, the other "abridged", sort of. I just fell in love with it, and I love it more when I've seen the long one.

ONLY THE LONG VERSION TELLS THE WHOLE STORY !

The music and photography, of course, is beautiful. The story is sad and sweet and simple and ....simply magical and mesmerizing !

I came across with the LD once in Japan. That one was in French with subtitles only in Japanese. I did not buy it and I have been regretting for it since then.

Here comes my question, which I hope some of you might know the answer : In which language, French or English, was this movie made ? The Long Version I watched was definitely in English. But the shorter one I watched seemed to be in French. What confuses me more is the songs - all in English. So ... what should it be if it is not hallucination ! I hope somebody could help me. Definitely, the DVD would help.

Summary: At last the DVD is released!
Review: I saw this movie's LD in my friend's home. It's such a touching, moving story that I've tried to find its video to add to my own collection. I can never find one. I'm glad now I can buy the DVD version. This is definitely a movie suitable for being published as DVD because it has great picture quality and incredible music. I heard people said the US video vesion doesn't use the original Eric Serra's music. That's really ridiculous. Eric Serra's music perfectly matches the movie. So I hope the DVD version will contain Eric Serra's stuff, not anything else.

Summary: I feel bad for the americans!
Review: I first saw this movie in France and absolutely fell in love with it. I live in the states and when I rented it in the U.S. I could not understand why Eric Serra's soundtrak was not used and why they cut out so many scenes and changed the ending (what a bad call! ). I strongly recommend to all Americans who saw the American version to do yourselves a favor and buy the DVD Director's Cut(Version Longue). It's a completely different movie (so to speak). This is definitely my all time favorite movie, and am ecstatic to have it on DVD. Yeahhh! Thanks to Amazon the Americans will finally have their chance to own a phenominal movie!

Summary: Just give me the Serra version, please!
Review: I loved this movie when I first saw it. I more recently got it out at a video store here in Palau and couldn't work out why it was so completely flat to watch. I realised then that the Eric Serra soundtrack had been replaced by a Bill Conti one. Who would do such a stupid thing?

It was terrible and I turned it off. I've ordered this DVD (don't even have a player yet) but boy, it had better be the Eric Serra version or else it's going to be an expensive coaster.

Summary: The Big Blue is a romantic adventure FULL of passion
Review: I first saw this movie in the theaters in France in 1988. It is such a moving, passionate story of a man, lonely and yet so full of passion for the sea. Jean Marc Barr is so cute and his quiet nature and gentle spirit are so attractive. The French generally provide a lot of insight to the personalities of their characters, and in this movie, you really become involved in each person's feelings and predicaments. It is an awesome movie that "takes you in" and I would highly recommend it to anyone who loves LOVE and the complications therein! I am so excited it is coming out in the theaters again on July 14, 2000! Go and see it, then BUY the memory! I am so glad it has finally come out in DVD as I'll be able to see it in French and English! Enjoy - you really will!

Summary: The Big Blue
Review: Bring me the Frenchman ...! Why have we had to wait so long for what is undeniably one of the most visually and aurally intoxicating films of all times? This film which pays homage to the world-famous free diver, Enzo Majorca, deals with a subject matter that few could find scintillating. However, Serra's score is both haunting and beautiful while the photography is some of the best use of light and shadow in a colour film. Whilst this all sounds rather "arty", there is a considerable amount of humour and interaction between the main protagonists of Reno, Barr and Arquette (not to mention a dolphin or two!). Many will think that the Director's cut is too long but the short version leaves you unsatisfied. Best watched with ALL the lights turned off and the bigger the screen the better (irrespective of damage to one's eyes! ). Few films today can succeed without graphic sex or violence of which this film has none. The worst crime was releasing this film to the US market with a different ending which misses the whole point of the film. Thankfully the Director's cut stays true to the original version. A cult film it may be - but it stands at the number 1 position on my top films of the past twenty years. It appeals to both sexes and is a must for anyone's library. I have seen it more times than most people could stand, why? - because it does not depend on any one element to keep you hooked.

Summary: MUSCI TO YOUR EYES!!
Review: Undoubtedly a masteripiece of Luc Besson. Location sites, storyline, acting.....This film flows like a poem. The tableaux are magnificent.... Eric Serra outstood himself in The Big Blue. His music composition speaks volumes about his talent.... Don't miss this film....
