Summary: Excellent Film
Review: I laughed, I cried, I was touched in many ways by this film. Any movie that can make me feel so many emotions is a great movie in my opinion. The little known actors in this movie did such a good job. The scenery was beautiful and it really gives you insight into the Tongan culture.

Summary: A movie about faith, without denominational overtones
Review: Sure, this movie is about a Mormon missionary. That fact, for some reason, is enough in-and-of-itself to scare many people away (and I can see why, after watching the abominable movie "God's Army," which stuffs, rams, and forces Mormonism down your throat by trying to make the missionaries seem like just 'one of the guys'). In this film, however, it is not young Elder Groberg's religion which is important--rather it is his selfless service and message of hope and love which make this film what it is. In fact, Disney does a great job of keeping references to Mormonism to a minimum, instead keeping the message one which all Christians should be able to relate to.

Groberg has some interesting experiences in his three years in Tonga--death, disease, natural disasters, and many other events mold not only him but the community at large. He struggles with the language and has both difficulties and triumphs in his work. At times, it seems he must take on the whole world, but each time he meets the challenge head-on with a fierce determination and a courage which are extremely admirable.

Above all, this is a message about faith. It doesn't matter your religion, this movie will move and inspire you if you let it. It doesn't push Mormonism on anyone, and that is perhaps what makes it so powerful. The impact would be the same if the missionary were from any other faith. I cannot praise this movie enough, nor recommend it sufficiently to anyone who wants of be uplifted and enlightened by a courageous story of faith.

Summary: A wonderful movie. . .
Review: Our family likes this movie very much. Yes, we are mormon, but I don't think one has to be a mormom to appreciate it. It's an inspiring story of determination, faith, friendship, and love, which can be enjoyed by the whole family. The movie does not show all the experiences Elder Grohberg had on his mission that he wrote about in his book (which I enjoyed reading very much),but it still gives a very good impression of what he went through. It is really an uplifting movie that I would like to highly recommend.

Summary: A Nice Story
Review: If you are interested in missionary work this is the movie for you. It provides great insight into the missionary field. I believe the film does a fairly good job not to affiliate with any one religion (only one strong reference to the Mormon Faith). The movie was entertaining and kept my interest.

My wife was a missionary for 3 years and she truly enjoyed it, making her reminisce of her younger years.

Summary: Where were the Tongans?
Review: Being married to a Tongan, I watched this movie already having a good insight into the Tongan people and culture. The only reason many Tongan people I know didn't enjoy it as much is because most of the actors/actresses in the film are not Tongan--they are Cook Islanders (where the movie was filmed). Of course, the actor I liked the most was Kolipoki's Tongan companion--a real Tongan. But I did enjoy all the performances--Polynesians are natural actors. And my husband's favorite part, which is becoming mine too, is when Kolipoki mistakenly says "outhouse," and a Tongan woman knocks over another Tongan woman for laughing. Those are the Tongans I know and love! ...Malo e lelei!

Summary: GREAT!
Review: I really loved this movie!! It is a great movie about faith and love. Although I am not Mormon, I am a Christian and I think this movie shows the love of God and commitment to others that exemplify Christianity in general and missionarys in particular.
I loved the fact that I did not feel like I had just been assaulted by filth and violence like I do with so many other movies and I felt uplifted long after the movie ended. I highly recommend this movie to everyone!

Summary: Not Just a "Mormon" movie
Review: With the recent release of many "mormon culture" films, this is one that is really different and that people mormon and non-mormon can all relate to. It is a story of faith, love and triumph over adversity. I've read some of the other reviews of this movie saying that it is insulting to the people of Tonga, but it was not meant to be. I felt that it was handled very well. I saw in this movie a beautiful people who have good values and are filled with love. This movie and the book, which I also highly recommend, inspire me and in a world filled with so much filth, it is something I can watch and feel uplifted. The only reason I gave it 4 out of 5 stars is because of Anne Hathaway. I'm just not a big fan of her as an actress and felt that someone else could have played her part in the movie less annoyingly.

Summary: It was a breath of CLEAN fresh air!
Review: I thought this movie was done in perfect taste, and very true to the book, which I have read. It started out a little slow, and maybe even a little cheesy at first, but it was refreshing to know it was a true story....and that real life isn't always non-stop fun and excitement, like we expect all movies to be now. It was a reminder of what really matters in this life....experiences and developing relationships with others. I haven't felt so good and happy after seeing a movie for a long time! Thank you!

Summary: Not the best, or the worst!!
Review: This movie begins in the early 1950's. A young man is called to be a Mormon misssionary in Tonga (an island in the South Pacific). He must leave his family and his girlfriend (Anne Hathaway) to do so. After a long and painful journey from his home in Idaho, he finally comes to the island he has been waiting for. The majority of the movie is spent on the island.

Pro's :

Very good effects, sometimes too good.
Good Actors, all did a good job
based on a true story, it can teach us all a lesson or two
None, if any cuss words

Con's

Sometimes very hard to follow, it gets confusing
Not any special features on the DVD
Not suitable for children under 10:

Reasons why not suitable for kids under 10:

1. Rats (or maybe they said bats) ate off the soles of the missionary's feet, I am NOT talking about the shoe soles either, it is graphic for a few seconds

2. An island teenager wants to 'make love' with the missionary, he refuses; her mother later comments to 'just give us one half white baby', and she also comments there wouldnt be a man on the island who wouldnt die to spend just one hour with her daughter, he comments he cannot share his seed until it is with his true love.

3. The girl who wanted to 'make love' later sells her body to a man on a boat, she is seen being lead into a small room.

4. A boy throughs up and they show the vomit. (Yuck!!)

5. The 'burial dance'may scare young kids. Women screaming after a man dies, yelling. Not very lovely.

OVERALL:

A good movie to see once, it will teach us all a lesson. But if you want to spend money to buy it, it is up to you.
