Summary: The Ultimate Classical Greek Adventure is dishonered.
Review: JASON AND THE ARGONAUTS may very well be THE classic adventure film. Everything about it shines with sheer perfection in the art of entertainment. Spectacular music by Bernard Herrmann, a sweeping story full of suspense and surprise, and some of Ray Harryhausen's all-time greatest effects work. I cannot commend this film enough.

After giving what was probably Harryhausen's worst film FIRST MEN IN THE MOON an awesome DVD treatment, they completely dishoner his good name with this edition of JASON AND THE ARGONAUTS. This is honestly one of the [worst] DVDs I've ever seen! (Hence the four star rating instead of five.) The picture and sound quality are so unbelievably bad!!! I've seen some VHS copies that easily outshine the print seen here. All other titles in the "Ray Harryhausen Signature Collection" sported digitally mastered audio and video, and looked like pure gold. Shame on you, Columbia!

The special features ..., too. Completely devoid of the documentaries featured on other "Signature Collection" DVDs, all we get is a pretty [bad] interview of Ray Harryhausen by John Landis. I guess it would seem interesting, but only for those who haven't seen "The Ray Harryhausen Chronicles", one of the previously mentioned documentaries. That feature is far more insightful than the one here.

JASON AND THE ARGONAUTS is a masterpiece, and this DVD is worth buying only if you absolutely must own it. If you don't, then avoid it at all costs.

Summary: 6 Star Film on a 2 Star DVD. C'mon GUYS! Do it RIGHT!!
Review: I believe there is very little I can say to further promote the virtues of this great mythological fantasy film. Nearly every review hails this as THE "Harryhausen Masterpiece". I am inclined to agree. So why then did Columbia/Tri-Star release such a horrid version of the film? I recently recieved this as a gift. I was extremely excited to have my first R.H. DVD!... What a let-down!! The picture quality was below average and the sound was [terrible]. Now I'm not a real picky person, so when I notice bad picture and bad sound IT MUST BE REALLY BAD!... Film scratches, dust specks, dark or obscure picture (even for Dynamation which always gets a little darker). I may as well have been playing the sound through my TV. I honestly could not tell that my woofer was on!! Get this; I recently purchased "Jack The Giant Killer" from Goodtimes Home Video, (for one third the price)a clearly inferior film in all aspects, with superior DVD picture and sound!! How can C/T-S explain that? I can honestly say that if you had a WS version in VHS, you would have no reason to own the DVD. Maybe C/T-S is going to pull one of those "Re-mastered, enhanced" re-releases so we all must shell out [more money]!! You might be better served waiting.

Review: Again Harryhausen's work speaks for itself. I watched this movie when I was young and still enjoy it today. It is timeless fun and adventure.

Summary: This Movie Rules!
Review: This is a great movie that should not be missed by anyone. The dated special effects (stop motion) are a wonder to see and made this movie a hit with audiences worldwide....great acting, lot's of action......highly recommended!

Summary: classic film for a classic tale
Review: This film is quite enjoyable. It's the right dose of mythology, action & special-effects. The special-effects are still interesting after nearly 40 yrs. I'd suspect the newer film places more emphasis on action & effects, but here they don't detract from the story. A great film to rent or own.

Summary: Great action from the stone age of special effects!
Review:

Holy cow, I can hardly believe special effects from the 60s can be as good as the FX in this movie, but I guess seeing is believing. Great acting, a really cool Hercules, unbelievably cute chicks, and awesome fight scenes. Ray Harryhausen did an unbelievable job of making the stop-action look real and terrifying. He even gave Talos and the skeleton warriors their own personalities. The stop-action in this movie easily stands up to the plastic-looking CGI of today. An excellent film for adults and children!

Summary: Love those Skeletons!
Review: We've all seen Jason duking it out with that army of skeletons. Need I say more? This is a great adventure/sci-fi/action flick that involves various mythological figures, and there are atleast 3 key scenes utilizing stop action photography that rival the famous skeleton sequence. I was a little disapointed with the picture quality. I was hoping for some digital remastering; the film is certainly worth it. Maybe a later edition will have this. In the meantime, it's still worth it for the content of this fun movie.

Summary: An Ashtonishing Achievement!
Review: Everyone will tell you about the special effects in this movie, made decades ago. And it's true that we have yet to see their equal, even in this age of computer animation and hundreds of million dollar budgets. Find me any movie special effects that even rival Talus, or the skeleton fight scene....you can't. But there is so much more here than special effects. The character of Hercules has never been portrayed with more ambiguity and depth. The relationship between the Gods and men is explored in a shockingly interesting way for an "action pic." Gadzooks! This is an intelligent and interesting film! This film towers over other monster pics the way "High Noon" towers over other westerns.

Summary: Compelling Story
Review: jason was a better hero than Sinbad. The monsters were not my favorite. The ending has a great battle scene with The realistic skeletons fought Jason and his men. Some people might say the ending was stupid, when Jason jumped into the river, to get away from the skeletons, but I though tthe ending worked out well. The Special Effects were incredible, they were awesome.

Summary: Awesome Sword and Sandal film!
Review: This is one of the best so called sword and sandal films ever made. The special effects are amazing and the score is very well done. The acting is also quite good and the lines and dialogue add rather then detract from the story Highly Recommended.
