Summary: the only way to get a 917 to fit inside your VCR
Review: Katzin uses alternative communication methods such as body language, and long racing sequences, to convey meaning in a manner all too easy to shrug off as lack of dialogue, excusing it as Katzin becoming carried away. no. this movie is about racing, and racing alone. Katzin makes an especially strong push towards bringing to light, if you will, the night and day of a race car driver. that is, off, and on the track. as McQueen said, "everything else is just waiting". the sentiment and drive of that statement is driven home by the entire film.some people complain about a supposedly shoddy sub-plot attempting to tie the story together, but in fact what happens during the course of the film, as it were, is an emphasis upon how focused a race car driver must be. intrusion, even for a second, can and will result in harrowing shunts, even death. as for the shoddy sub-plot, there is no room in the waiting life of a race car driver for complications or commitments. racing has no equal, and the spartan life of the drivers portrayed indicates the amount that they push their lives away. for some, racing is life. others do not race.

Summary: Truly The Best Racing Film of All Time
Review: You know, for nearly thirty years now I've had this dirty little secret - that I truly love this film. Trashed by pencil-necked critics at the time of its initial release or condemned with "faint" praise by others who "wanted more of a story line" (!?!?), I don't think its ever received its due. If its a complicated tale of moral ambiguity you seek - put on "The Wild Bunch." If you're a car person, though, and the sounds and sights of Porsche 917s and Ferrari 512s howling down the Mulsane Straight flat out in excess of 240 MPH doesn't move you - well, check your pulse!!! I typically throw this in the VCR at some point around mid-Winter and stare out to my garage where my 911 sits all covered and hibernating. And, if I close my eyes and listen to the soundtrack, well........

Summary: Probably the first "grown-up" movie I ever saw
Review: This film probably sparked my life-long love affair with motor sports. This is a movie about an bygone era when auto racing still was, as Steve McQueen puts it, "a professional blood sport." The minimal subplot is almost disposable. It has something to do with a rivalry between McQueen and another driver, both romantic and on the track. The heart of this movie is the racing scenes. Porsche 917's and Ferrari 512's racing wheel to wheel, their howling turbocharged 12-cylinder engineers propelling them down the straights at up to 240mph, sometimes demolishing themselves in a slow motion ballet of carnage. While fictional, this film gives you more of a feel for what it must have really been like than watching the real race live on TV did for me this year. I have only one complaint. It's not out on DVD yet!

Review: The ultimate race of the ultimate cars. Porsche vs. Ferrari at the most prestigious racing event; Le Mans. Real race footage combined with classic 70's style film making. If they tried to make this film today it wouldn't be as good with phony computer graphics. What you get here is real crashes and true racing, no cheesed out special effects. Mcqueen captures the essence of the International Auto Racer. Mcqueen was an excellent racer in real life who fancied Porshes. -Eduard Scott Bales

Review: This movie is one of the best racing movies of all times. A classic battle between two manufacturers determined to prove who is best. The amount of racing footage is terrific. This moving is racing, just racing, the way it was at Le Mans in 1970.

Summary: Le Mans is the perfect movie for race fans
Review: Made in 1971, Le Mans with Steve McQueen still offers the best racing footage captured on film before or since. This is THE movie for racing fans, bar none. The cars, vintage Porsche and Ferrari sports racers, are some of the most beautiful and stylish ever made, and the camera lovingly lingers on all their graceful curves and vicious corners. The racing footage is top notch, with stomach churning speed, and bruising corners rushing at you at all times. This movie really gives the sensation of racing around a twisting circuit to the viewer. The only downside to the average viewer is that the film was obviously made for the race fan at heart, because the story outside of the race drama is relatively thin. But for the racing fan, hey, who cares! This is a movie about THE RACE. The side stories about the drivers outside their cars is even intrusive sometimes, which is a mistake. The narrative should have only been about the hazzards of racing, not the stress of romance! C'mon! Steve McQueen in a Porsche 917! Fun and fast. Nobody has done it better to date, which is too bad. If you love speed, but your only experience with racing movies is 'Days of Thunder', you owe it to yourself to see 'Le Mans'.

Review: A first-rate look at one of the world's greatest motor races filmed during the most exciting era of sports car racing to date. The cinematography and audio quality are so superb you'll be reaching for that five-point Simpson harness. Steve McQueen and Porsche 917....a winning team!

Summary: Le Mans, the best racing movie ever made.
Review: This movie is a closet masterpiece, Grand Prix was good, but too soap opraish at times. The sound of the 917 howling down the Mulsanne is worth the price alone. Real race car driver David Piper lost his leg during the course of shooting the film.

Summary: Finest racing movie ever.
Review: This film should be released again for the big screen. It would really give the "24 Hours of Le Mans" a shot in the arm. Steve McQueen gave a brilliant performance as a driver dedicated to his profession. The film does not give much opportunity for the characters to act. But they carry themselves the way real racing teams perform. You will find that they have a great deal of respect for each other. They are professionals.

Review: The best racing film made to date. If you are looking for "Days of Thunder" don't look here. This is a historically correct presentation of the LeMans race during the height of the Sports Car era, starring someone who actually knew how to race. Factory vs. Factory - Porsche vs. Ferrari. Great footage, great effects. The use of slow motion footage forces the viewer to understand the brutality of the crashes and comprehend how dangerous racing in this era truly was. If you've ever spent time in the pits during endurance races, you will immediately feel at home.
