Summary: Good movie, great acting, terrific story.
Review: I have read alot of reveiws about this movie, some of them good, but most of them bad, so i thought i would just add a good reveiw to counter act all the bad ones. To be perfectly frank, i loved this movie. The dialouge was clever, the acting well done(especially on Susan's part), the music moving to the point of tears, and the camera work spectacular. I loved the story, and even though some may say it was all about revenge, wasn't accurate,etc.etc.,however,I think the central theme was wonderful. i think we americans have become rather comfortable with our free speech and public schools, so much so that we have forgotten what the brave boys of '76 did to grant us our God-given rights. This movie takes that and rubs it in our faces. i walked out of the theater feeling like shouting "God bless America!" at the top of my lungs. See this movie, you won't regret it.

P.s. One of the reveiwers above mentioned that the British would never have burned a church with people inside like they did in the movie, and while i havn't heard of them burning chuches specificly, I have it on good authority that when the british came to a town where they knew the pastor was a patriot, they would drag the pastor and his family out into the street, execute them, burn the church pews, then stable their horses in the Santuary. I have also heard of other things, like killing sick patriots in their beds, killing soldiers who had surrendered, and burning houses with the residents still inside. This all sounds just about as bad, if not worse than, the incident in the movie.

Summary: Good Movie For History & Dealing With People
Review: There's two movies named Patriot but this is the best. I've seen both. This movie is cheaper and it is good because it teaches some history about when America first became a county. I like watching movies about history so when Mel Gibson can make something educatonal to help me along I would always appreciate it. There's a lesson about trying to get along with other people, and if you try your best to suceed, and what you can do when people give you a hard time. It was good to see Mel and his troop defend our country and when they blow them away and learn something. There is really good filming of the location where the battle scenes were taking place in the south. It looked real. I think most kids my age would like this movie or if you are a girl maybe not. Alot of action and you can learn something interesting instead of always reading book.

Summary: those darned aliens again!
Review: Well, I suppose the Patriot is, at the very least, a quantum leap forward in both production values, story telling and good old fashioned entertainment over the last few outings by those terrible twins Emmerich and Devlin.

However, the reoccuring theme of invasion USA is getting a little hackneyed, and must have had just about the last drop of blood wrung from it. Let's recap: first up, those land-greedy Arabs in StarGate; followed by more despicable 'third'worlders in huge 'zeppelins' in ID4; and, last but not least, it's now the turn of a few more norhtern Euro-trash in The Patriot. Who's next up for that nice Jewish boy Roland E. to pit his angst against.

Okay, griping aside. The film looked great and Mel Gibson still has the emotion 'epic' ingrained into every laugh-line in his face.

Summary: Garbage
Review: A classic case of Americans revising history. This movie is historically inaccurate, filled with lies and misrepresentations of what really happened. The Americans were responsible for their own fair share of attrocities in the war, perhaps more so than anything the English did. Furthermore the main character was not the shining light he is portrayed to be, but rather a vicious, brutal slave owner who was notorious for the extreme abuse he inflicted on his slaves. Yes such a vicious, ruthless individual is ideal in a war, but then let's see him portrayed as such, let's see the things he really did, rather than this weak, whitewashed nonsense. Or are Americans too weak-minded to deal with a 'hero' who has his (very) dark side?

The lies aside, this is just a typical action movie, nothing more, but that's to be expected from the makers of ID4. If you're looking for a good action movie I suggest you look elsewhere.

Summary: What's your purpose? Accuracy=rent; Entertainment=purchase
Review: Unfortunately, I was let down by this film. I would recommend renting it to see once, if you're looking for some type of historical & accurate experience. If you want entertainment from war, well, enjoy the vicarious brutal thrills over and over by purchasing it. Other than the negative aspects of the plot and script, I pretty much have forgotten it in the months since I saw it in the theater.

I have a Bachelor's Degree in History and I was eagerly anticipating this film. I know that film studios want to make profits, screenwriters want to write a good yarn, actors wish to act well, and moviegoers want to be entertained, then afterwards, leave the theater informed from a feel-good version of American history. What lofty goals to set and fulfill for one film.

I left the theater after seeing this film with more questions about the plot and script than was expected. A good film should answer the question it raises...unless that was the point of the writer. This was not the type of film to be deep like that. I would like to know....Who was "The Patriot" in this film? Was it Heath Ledger's character who actually fought for what he believed in? Or is it supposed to be Mel Gibson's character, who avoided conflict until the desire for revenge took control? There was never really any tranformation or desire to fight for the creation of a new country on Gibson's character's part. Family was the issue, it appeared, not character growth and development. That trait seems a reflection of today's American societal values. I felt that I was watching a man sent back into Colonial times with the knowledge and experiences of today's man. It was not a person who dealt with the complex issues of the times.

Remember, our founding fathers were rebelling against their king! If they had lost, they would have been executed as traitors or rebels. By raising arms, they were not heroes in the eyes of many Colonists. Only about 1/3 of the population fought for the split from England. 1/3 supported (in their eyes) the rightful governance of the king. The last 1/3 remained neutral ...difficult at times, but if an individual was on the frontier, this could have been easier to do.

The one major point that the film neglected to point out and would have explained to the audience the reason for the ruthlessness of the British which existed in the region.... Charleston and the surrounding area had surrendered to the British just before the time period of the film. Thousands of American Colonial men gave their "Parole" (honorable promise that they would never involve themselves in the conflict against the British) and were therefore released. This was a common practice with both armies and even existed during our Civil War. When the men joined in the militias and fought again, the British rightfully felt they were betrayed. (Remember the spirit of the times) These men had broken their word and that made them outlaws to be hunted down, not honorable soldiers, in the eyes of the Brits.

I truly dislike how the British were portrayed in the film. Burning the church full of innocent people was done for sheer shock value. Yes, the British burned homes and buildings out. Yes, the Americans burned out Tory supporters, too. There were soldiers on both sides who were brutal. But mass murder at the equal of World War II atrocities were just not done! This is a ploy to show how evil our opponents supposedly were and how good us Americans were. The whole scene did not even need to be there. The British officer did this to find out the hideout of Mel's band, and did not even follow through. This soured the rest of the film for me, unfortunately. I have been attempting to research if something on this scale had basis in fact and so far, I have found nothing. If anyone else has documented an incident similar to the church burning, please post it. I would love to believe that script writers and studios would not stoop to this level to entertain the masses and then call it artistic license. But then again, I would not be surprised.

I would advise an interested person to see this film, but to realize the goals of the parties involved in its making. I just hope that this brings more popularity into filming Revolutionary era films. I would love to see a period film accomplished with a coherent plot and excellent dialogue. Make the characters fit the time period in desires, experiences, and goals.

I am an American and proud of my country, but I would not scream "See this movie because you should be proud of your heritage." What you should do is read and research your history. Films are good to see in their context. Visual displays can help to realize what things looked like. But too much is required of a film to be exactly like things happened. It has to be worked on to make coherence, a good plot line, and handle certain time constraints. Books and primary sources do not have that problem. Good luck and enjoy "The Patriot" for what it is...a film...then do some research and fill in the unanswered gaps.

Summary: The True Freedom Fight. The way it really happened.
Review: This movie tells one thing don't play around with war. If a group or a person is determined to be free it will fight till the last blood spill.

In 1776 war can be seen in the mists of every plantation and every city. A family is caught in between the fight. A Murdered son, a vindictive father, and a strong headed fighter. They all mix together to make an epic film that says hey this is what really happened! America wasn't just there. It became. The ending seens of this movie are the ideal hero scences mounted on horse while the star spangled banner waves in the sunsent.

The movie had critisim for its long running time but thats for people that just can't apreaciate what these soldiers did for us 200 years ago. The film is one of the best climax structured films I had ever seen. With a twisted plot to fit in tears, horror, and glory. One of the best war/drama films in our time.

Summary: This is TOPS!
Review: I think that this movie will be a classic...not only for everyone, but in Gibson's career also. He gives a SPECTACULAR and STELLAR performance! Along with a cast that does equally as well...this movie is the BEST I have seen. If you are a TRUE AMERICAN and you really love your country and are greatful for the blessings and privileges that we have then this movie is for you without a doubt!

Summary: Had high hopes but.....
Review: Was expecting a saving private ryan set in the 1770's what I got was cliche after cliche , inaccuracy after inaccuracy. To those who are knowledgable of this time period you'll see the holes soon into the picture. If you want an intelligent film about this time period, rent or buy I recommend buy Last of the mohicans(even thought that takes place in the French and Indian war) speaking of Indians they were completely left out of this picture to a group of people who ahd a pivotal role in the revolution I found it highly insulting. This movie does have some redeeming qualities the first battle I belive its supposed to be the battle of charleston is entertaining and fairly accurate. I give credit to an excellent role of General Cornwallis played by (Tom Wilkinson). Another note this picture did its best to villianize the British, which is wrong and extremely inaccurate the colonials were much more brutal than their british adversaries.

Summary: Braveheart II
Review: Very disappointing! I can't believe actor/director Mel Gibson agreed to play in what is grossly Braveheart II in an american historical setup. Change the uniforms and the props and it's the same thing... without the magic! A poor remake working on the same emotional strings: torn family/couple, an unwilling hero dragged into war, very cruel english enemy. Music Maestro John Williams was not very inspired by the story and gave a dull average score. Some nice pictures though. Please buy the breathtaking Braveheart instead...
