Summary: DVD adds a lot to this movie
Review: Set in and around the American Revolution, this is the first movie I ever saw on the subject, even though there are numerous past films about the same topic. I found that the warfare was surprisingly brutal. You would never find anyone in their right mind nowadays even consider facing off against one another at point blank range with guns. I thought this aspect of the movie was extremely well done, and the inclusion of various cgi created battles made it seem even more horrific. The story was good and interesting, especially for how long the movie was. I had seen the movie a couple times in the theatre so seeing it on dvd after only a few months doesn't have the same effect as a movie you haven't seen in years. Regardless I thought the dvd reproduction was very well done, and of course the best part of dvd are the extras. This has some neat looks at the making of the movie, as well as how some of the computer effects were done, which I always love to see. There is also an average commentary track which is interesting to listen to. Overall this is a very nice dvd to have in your collection, and I would recommend it to anyone.

Summary: You gotta be kidding?!
Review: This movie has so many flaws that it makes it almost a joke more than anything. The dialog is horrible, the acting is second rate, and the plot is so bad that you can tell exactly what is going to happen the entire 3 hours. Not only that but the movie is horribly unrealistic. Really, do yo think that Mel Gibson's character could take down 30 guys with about 5 shots and a hatchet? It's bad enough this happens, but it happens over and over again. No one has this many lives. Sure the movie Die Hard did the same thing, but it was meant to be funny the way he couldn't die, and he joked about it too. This movie has some redeaming points in the fact that the full scale battles are fun to look at, but the other 2 and a half hours are just a waste of your time. you're better off renting this movie because chances are you won't want to watch this 3 hour bore more than once.

Summary: Best Movie to come out of Hollywood in years!
Review: The Patriot is great Historical Fiction and a timely reminder about the "course of Human Events" that led to the creation of the American Experiment. It should be rated PG but is rated R most likely because of current Political Incorrectness with the dubious excuse of excessive violence (far worse and more is shown every night via Television). Many of the movie's events have direct correlations with actual historical events. One that I have not seen mentioned is the correlation between the murder of a civilian in Upstate New York in the months preceding the battle of Saratoga. An historical review published in American History Illustrated Vol X Number One, makes the case that the senseless brutality of Government British Troops inflamed local sentiment and contributed greatly to the extraordinary turnout of the local New York Militia and consequently victory in what came to be known as the Turning Point in the American Revolutionary War.

Everyone in the world should see "The Patriot"

Summary: Heartbreaking
Review: Anyone who doesn't see this movie for what it is is blinded by a corrupted society. This movie is absolutely breathtaking, heartbreaking, and passionate. The church wasn't burned to make the British look bad - it was to make us really *hate* Colonel Tavington! Mel Gibson, as always, portrays his character with skill and deturmination. I never, ever purchase or even rent R-rated movies as generally they go against my Christian beliefs, but in this case, I made an exception. Not only does The Patriot promote freedom, integrety, honesty, and fighting for what you believe, but it also makes heroes out of Christians. And if that's why so many people bash The Patriot, then it's worth it to know that society isn't as dead as it seems.

Summary: An engrossing and entertaining film.
Review: Not by any means should The Patriot be veiwed for accuracy while the battle scenes have some accuracy to them, to veiw this film and think that it's accurate would be fuitle but who knows really what wen't on in the Revolutionary War historians can only paint us a picture of what could have been wich is exactly what Dean Devlin and Roland Emmrich did in this epic was to try and give you a sense of awareness of what it could have been like the smells , the brutality , the chaos , the conflict , and the war.Mel Gibson once again gives an emtionally charged performance as Benjamin Martin a family man who at his age is settling to the family he has made but in many ways still fighting his deamons in his life from war when he was a soldier but his older son young and weary of battle want's to join the war for what he beleives in freedom.

But when the redcoats threathen his way of life and put his family in danger he confronts his nemisis Colonel Tarington who

seemingly pushes Martin more and more into war. When he tries to voice his opinon in a meeting with superiors and peers of his own townspeople and General Cornwallis , Martin voices his mind about the war that it should stop and peace should be made with both sideds but he's only ridiculed and laughed at even by his elder son who belives in what the war is doing. But when the war gets more intense and Martin begins to loose his family to the war and insurmountable loss they push him to the breaking point into battle forming a malitia , but they will have to face the colonels midevial battle tactics and his barbarism and the whole entire army of General Cornwallis to do so they must join an army .In this entertaining epic , many options , commentarys trailers , docudrams and informative info on the making of this film a fun film to watch.

Summary: Some points about THE PATRIOT
Review: 1. No, it's not as good as Braveheart. But what IS? Braveheart is arguably the best movie ever made, short of the second Ben Hur! It was a masterpiece by all accounts! NOTHING is likely to equal it in a similar genre for years!

2. The Patriot is still a great movie! A beautifully filmed movie that gives a very accurate feel for the era.

3. All of the events shown in the film happened during the Revolution to SOMEONE SOMEWHERE. The characters here are symbolic of whole groups. That's what many miss.

4. Hollywood FEARS this movie because it champions a set of values that they hold in utter contempt. That the movie was even made was a rather gutsy act.

5. The MORAL of this movie is the most important one a person in today's world could ever hear: that THEY have inaleniable natural rights that supercede the authority of any government, and they have the God-given FREEDOM (and the DUTY) to defend those rights against their government as a last resort.

6. The act of having to call another person "king" means that you are nothing but a slave. The American Revolution was a war for freedom against a nation that still loves to ceremonially honor a time when a royal family owned them like cattle.

7. The Brits are in a tizzy over this flick. Good. We kicked your lousy, imperial butts and embarrased you in front of the entire world. Everyone laughed at you. Live with it.

8. Is Mel gonna remake Ghandi next to complete his "freedom from England" trilogy? : )

9. This movie perfectly illustrates why the second ammendment was included in the US Constitution. Hint: it ain't just there so we can hunt...

Summary: Unoriginal But Entertaining
Review: Take Braveheart, Glory, and Gettysburg and put them in a blender. Voilla, you have the Patriot. This movie is not original in any sense of the term. It has what you expect: canons, killing, attempts of tearjerking, even a typical rousing soundtrack by John Williams. Do not get me wrong, this is entertaining. It is also trite and predictable. At least its better then most of the "movies" released this year! If you are a fan of Mel or the Civil War, buy it. Otherwise just rent it, save yourself some money.

Summary: Go watch it, then the rest is history
Review: I was surprised that this was a film by Roland Emmerich, the same guy who directed Stargate, ID4, and (ugh) Godzilla. He finally did something right. Unlike his previous films, this one actually has some meaning to it. The Patriot is about a man whose faith and beliefs about war intersects with what is more important: his family, but also takes us down the road in American history. It's not a deep-in-depth historical masterpiece, but it still gives you a good idea of what went on, and it's also a good 2 1/2 hours of your time.

Headed by Mel Gibson, some people will think that The Patriot is Braveheart resurrected. Well, at some points it is, but the movie is not. Anyways, outstanding performances are evident throughout. Gibson is the real thing, both on and off the battlefield. Jason Isaacs probably gives the highlight performance of the movie, playing the kind of character you just want to chuck something at. We get a good sense that the characters live in spacious worlds and not just know only each another. The movie has an obsessed balance of grittiness and comedy, which worked great. Still, some questionable things were here and there: for this movie, the title "The Patriot" didn't seem to work. Also, is this a story of a man who fought for a cause in the Revolution, or is it about the Revolution itself? Who knows, but what counts is that we got a good idea of both.

The Patriot is Emmerich done right, but his filmmaking formula remains. It's not bad thing, but for those who want a historical background from this movie, I'm afraid you'll have to look somewhere else. It has the idea, but it doesn't give too much. The Patriot is well worth the money, but it is basically a big summer movie painted over with the American Revolution. It supplies many laughs, tears, and triumph, but not so much on history. You could take this story on a set that doesn't have to be about the Revolution and still have the same concept. You have a perfect summer movie anyways right? All aside, grab some popcorn and a 2-liter Coke and enjoy yourself some 2 1/2 hours.
