Summary: A great, very well done film.
Review: THe Patriot was great, I thought. Sort of like Gone With the Wind, with one tradgedy after another. Sorry if that spoiled anything! Heath Ledger and Mel Gibson did an absolutely great acting job, best I've seen. The directing job was excellent. A good setting and storyline, with plenty of humor, tradgedy and plot. I, personally, loved it.

Summary: Did Mike Freed see the same movie as everybody else?
Review: Personally, I thought The Patriot was a well-made movie. Apparently, though, certain people missed some parts of it. First, the "slaves" weren't slaves at all. They were paid workers for Benjamin. They said so themselves. Secondly, the slave that joined Benjamin's militia wasn't his slave. He was acting as a substitute for a slaveowner that was too old to fight. Third, the newly-freed slave isn't the only one helping to rebuild Benjamin's house. All the surviving members of the militia were pitching in as well. It was also implied that ALL the fighters' homes would be rebuilt in like fashion, with EVERYBODY helping. As for your umbrage taken to the tactics used by the British Army, keep in mind that Colonel Tavington was the only one using these tactics, and that he was reprimanded by General Cornwallis. Next time, actually watch the movie before you decide to write a criticism about it. For the rest of you, the movie is worth at least a rent. I found Benjamin Martin's past in the movie intriguing, and the battle scenes were choreographed nicely. There were a couple of parts that were a bit choppy, but overall, a very entertaining movie.

Review: That sums up "The Patriot". Just sit and enjoy this "Mel Gibson, Braveheart" goes colonial. If you find family suffering and sacrifice a key ingredient for good entertainment then you have found the right movie. The DVD extras also add to this movie.

Summary: Great Action Picture now in Widescreen (16:9) DVD !
Review: Braveheart stile story but the hero avenges his families deaths & vanquishes the foe. Full of action and realism. On the Widescreen HDTV it is beautiful and horrifying. Mel Gibson is awesome.

Summary: Wretchedly bad history, wretchedly bad film
Review: It's difficult to know where to start with this hollow, boring, offensive mess of a film. The historical problems are wide ranging and have been covered in some detail in previous posts, so I'll omit them. Suffice to say, I am generally willing to overlook historical inaccuracies if I feel that the feel of the period was captured in some way, but nothing about this movie merits the benefit of the doubt. The script is dreadful, the acting wooden (the one sterling exception to this being Jason Isaacs, who is playing a standard villian character but does it with some aplomb), and the battle scenes suffer from a lack of grit that seriously detract from their authenticity. If you want to see excellent battle scenes from this era, go watch Last of the Mohicans or Glory (Civil War), movies that are 10 years older than The Patriot and put the CGI enhanced sequences in The Patriot to shame (they also happen to be much better movies). And I would be remiss if I didn't mention the appallingly insulting portrayal of life for African Americans in South Carolina during the late eighteenth century; the movie seemed to hearken back to a Gone With the Wind-esque portrayal of the peculiar institution. The Patriot is wretched history and a wretched movie that no one should have to sit through.

Summary: It's no Braveheart...
Review: This movie continues Mel Gibson's tradition of making very good action movies that contain a story, but this is no Braveheart. The Patriot has great battle scenes that seem all too close to reality as does Braveheart, but lacks the compelling story to go with it.

Don't get me wrong, the storyline is still good. Mel Gibson as a father who realizes he must once again go to war for his country in order to protect his son is good... but falls a bit short of the expectations Gibson has created for himself.

Sets and costumes are outstanding, as is the supporting cast.

The violence and gore should steer children away from this movie, but a good viewing for the mature audience.

Summary: Great Movie! Action packed! Accurate enough!
Review: This is a great movie. Benjamin Martin (played by Mel Gibson) is struggling to protect his family from the tyranny of the British during the American Revolution. For those who think that this movie is historically inaccurate, here is a quote from the Declaration of Independence: "The history of the present King of Great Britain is a history of repeated injuries and usurpations, all having in direct object the establishment of an absolute Tyranny over these States..... He has erected a multitude of New Offices, and sent hither swarms of Officers to harrass our people, and eat out their substance..... He has kept among us, in times of peace, Standing Armies without the Consent of our legislatures..... He has combined with others to subject us to a jurisdiction foreign to our constitution..... For Quartering large bodies of armed troops among us..... For protecting them, by a mock Trial, from punishment for any Murders which they should commit on the Inhabitants of these States..... He has plundered our seas, ravaged our Coasts, burnt our towns, and destroyed the lives of our people." In "The Patriot", Benjamin Martin is fighting for his family and for the cause of the American people: Freedom and Independence.

Review: I have just seen The Patriot and i think it is one of the best films about the revolutionary war ever made.Mel Gibson and newcomer Heath Ledger were fantastic now they deserve Oscars at this years Oscars

Summary: Braveheart meets Saving Private Ryan
Review: This movie bears resemblances to "Braveheart" and "Saving Private Ryan". Like Braveheart, one of the recurring themes of this movie is freedom, and Mel Gibson plays once again a reluctant war-hero and leader who rallies the common villagers to fight valiantly for the cause of freedom. In both movies, Mel waves the flag to rally the soldiers to fight for the cause. This movie is similar to "Saving Private Ryan" in that it illustrates the great sacrifice that the American fighting soldier had to pay in order to secure the freedom of the country. The main characters had to sacrifice the loss of loved ones as they carried on the fight against the British. The movie is also similar to "Private Ryan" in its graphic war violence and camera footage in the battle sequences.

The acting was great. Mel Gibson was perfect as the main hero, Jason Isaacs makes a great ruthless villain in Capt. Tavington, and Tom Wilkinson does a fine job portraying the "gentleman" warrior Gen. Cornwallis. Some have criticized this movie as being anti-British, but the contrast between Capt. Tavington and Gen. Cornwallis shows the differences between the British leadership.

I also appreciated how this movie was pro-family and it depicted a close family relationship. This movie had almost no profanity in it, which I also liked. The only objectionable part is the graphic battle violence and some disturbing scenes, like the one where Mel's character enlists his two young sons to ambush and kill an unsuspecting squad of British soldiers.

In spite of all this, I enjoyed this movie and I recommend it. This is one of the few movies about the American Revolutionary War that is worth watching. At the very least, it will make the viewer interested in reading more about the American Revolution.

The DVD features two documentaries that are interesting and worth watching -- one talks about the battles of the Revolutionary War, and the other about the making of the film. You'll enjoy it!

Summary: Awesome Special Features
Review: The best part of any DVD has to be all the "extras" thrown in. This DVD has to be one of the better examples of rewarding those who live for the "extras". It showcases 2 different behind the scenes featurettes, trailers, talent files, and of course the commentary. Besides all that, the movie itself will jerk a tear and make you proud of being an American.
