Summary: hilariously funny film in a way.
Review: Although the film was fairly good in parts, i found it predictable and corny. ' she is the north star' is now a joke between me and my friends. Was it not painstakingly obvious that mel gibson was going to find the north star choker among the ashes? However i did like the scene where mel tricks the brits with the soldiers in the field and leaves with the dogs. It's worth watching for the bad diologue alone, but some people will find it exciting and a moving film. Therefore it can be loved by all!

Summary: Hollywooden
Review: The Patriot is pretty much your typical Hollywood blockheader. Cardboard characterizations and a formulaic script overwhelm the excellent cinematography and glimmers of good acting. I was put off by the distasteful villainization of the British, who in truth, acquitted themselves quite honorably in their conduct of the war; and of Lord Cornwallis, who was a decent man and general. In this movie, Hollywood once again shows its odd understanding of how warfare is really conducted. In warfare one wants the HIGH ground! Not to mention the foolishness of shooting your enemy from a circle!!! However, the most lamentable fault of The Patriot is it's utter predictability. I continually annoyed the people I was watching it with by telling them what would happen next.... Rent this movie if you like Mel Gibson, you won't be disappointed.

Summary: Great movie, very stirring, forget the fussy historians
Review: Forget the fussy historians who complain that this movie isn't historically accurate, people go tosee movies to escape and be enetertained,it appears that some people have forgotten this. Hey people this is Hollywood, what do you expect,a dry and fussy boring history lesson? Yuk. Go to the movie because you want to see Mel or any of the other fine actors and the scenery and clothes. Gibson's character is thought to be based on the swamp rat and his real life doings during the Revolutionary War. And people like Tavington do exist, unfortunately,in real life.

Summary: Finds Villains in a Villainless War
Review: The Patriot is the story of Benjamin Martin (Mel Gibson), a South Carolina farmer who has taken up arms for the American colonies against Britain. Martin is a former member of the British army who has gained notoriety for his exploits during the French and Indian War. His wife has died and left him to take care of their many children.

When the movie opens Martin has been called to Charles Town to debate the merits of South Carolina joining the rebellion. Martin is steadfastly against war against Britain. He gives an honest and sincere appraisal of what is to follow if war is declared.

The main part of the movie begins after war is declared and Martin's son Gabriel (Heath Ledger) signs up for the continental army. Martin is against it; but, his son is old enough to enlist without his father's permission.

The Patriot, like almost all Hollywood works of historical fiction, is not good history. The story itself is entertaining; but, for anyone who knows the real history of the American Revolution, the movie cannot be completely satisfying without at least a semblance of adherence to historical accuracy.

The main cause of conflict in this film is Col Tavington (Jason Isaacs), a British officer who is seeking to regain his family's fortune by service on the battlefield. In the course of his campaigns, Tavington engages in some truly heinous acts that can only be described as war crimes. Martin swears to kill Tavington sometime during the war for actions he has taken against his family.

The historical personage that Tavington is based upon was a Col Tarleton. Tarleton was the commander of the Green Dragoons and a disgraced former member of the aristocracy, like Tavington in the movie. During the war, Tarleton was known as "Bloody" Tarleton for a supposed act of severe violence against a group of Americans who had surrendered to him. Tarleton was said to have cut them to pieces after their surrender. The truth is much murkier as it's likely that the event never happened or that Tarleton did not know that the Americans were trying to surrender.

Of course Hollywood needed a villain to place against the protagonist in the film or there wouldn't have been a film. Hollywood is interested in story not historical documentaries.

The cinematography of The Patriot is very good. The score of the movie is also very good. As stated, the story is entertaining but not completely satisfying. If you like the historical epic genre, then you're likely to enjoy The Patriot if you don't get hung-up on the facts.

Summary: I can't believe it
Review: I usually watch a movie for the entertainment just as many others do. But when a movie that is done with class and is trying to educate us at the same time I am disappointed when it seems others have gotten nothing out of it. I really could not believe some of the low scoring on this movie. Just as Saving Private Ryan, Braveheart, and etc. this was a awesome and yet sad but close accounting of what we the younger generation, can never know or understand of what it must of been like for those who lived is those times without movies like this. They would rather watch a movie like "Matrix" (which I happen to enjoy also) which is totally a fabrication. This was a good movie, it made me mad, it made me cry, but it made me appreciate what our fore fathers did for us.

Summary: Wonderful movie, sure to become a favorite!
Review: Well done with something for everyone: romance, action, and history. Mel Gibson brings his usual charm and is easily matched by newcomer Heath Ledger. Fantastic casting, lovely soundtrack, powerful dialogue, and haunting scenery make this movie more than worthwhile!

Summary: All Guts, No Story
Review: Have you seen Braveheart 2 yet...you have if you've seen The Patriot. Different time period, same basic story. This film is filled with cliches and enough gratitous death scenes to make it more bloody than the worst slasher film. Enough already. By the end the only one standing is guess who...that's right, Mel Gibson, minus the blue face paint.

Don't get me wrong, there are good things about this movie. Gibson leads a strong cast of actors that make the most of their parts, trying desparately to invoke humananity into this almost mechanical (and maniacal) film. The cinematography is rich and adds immensely to this movie. Acting and cinematography is the only reason it was awarded with 3 stars from me (I actually wanted to give it 2 and a half stars). Direction is average, but again, the focus seems to be on bloodshed instead of story. All guts no story (see what I meant). We all know the story, but the plot is beyond predictable in this film, which seriously detracts from its message (if there is one besides 'war is bloody' 'war is bad' 'war kills') DUH! The film is exceedingly long and drawn out...maybe they could have shortened it a bit by eliminating a few blood-fests, which may have improved it substantially.

At least Braveheart was interesting. Don't believe the hype. This one's a rental at best.

Summary: Spectacular and Full of Surprises
Review: This movie is surely one of a kind and is better than Braveheart. Yes I said it, BETTER THAN BRAVEHEART! It is such a ride adding in some masterful cannon ball shots and a fabulous plot with so many things going on at once you will never be caught drifting off. Trust me..if you only see one war movie this year than make it the Patriot. Mel Gibson puts on one of his best performances and I can guarantee you will be shocked at at least 3 different parts of the movie and the rest will leave you on the edge of your seat. After you see it once you immediately must own it. The same effect happened on me. I saw it at my cousin's and bought it the next day. The special features are even at their best! BUY IT TODAY!

Summary: Patriotic Travasty
Review: This movie had so much potential to give a balanced perspective of the emotional depths and divisions which marked our Revolutionary War. Unfortunately with mel Gibson at the helm, all we get is a silly Brave Heart set in the American Revolution. This is too bad, as the sets and costumes are quite well done, but all is for naught as we have all the mel gibson cliches of showing the British too be either arrogant buffoons, or nasty, petty killers. The revenge element in todays movies seems to be a Hollywood vehicle to dumb down historical content for the American viewer. This is unfortunate as i believe the American public could handle a more complex film and plot, but Hollywood does not think we can, so we get the same contrived stuff served up to us over and over again. The battle scenes, while impressive, are exaggerated. The numbers involved are too large. The Southern battles were fought with a few thousand on each side, and the Americans generally outnumbered the British and usually lost! Cornwallis was not the silly parody we see here, but one of the few daring and aggressive generals the British had. Washington rightly feared him because of the defeats he had administered to him several times. And the travasty of Lord Tavington burning innocent colonials in their church is a take off on the Nazi's in WW2! It has no place in this period! Such scenes like this show how immature and inbalanced the movie producers were in this film. Tavington is a corruption of Banastere Tarleton, the hard-ridding Britsih dragoon officer, who was controversial in some of his actions, but not a cold-blooded maniac-nazi that we have here, and of course mel has to get him in the end! Mel Gibson steals the historical roles of several American leaders, providing even more distortion in this film. I would say view this movie for fun and entertainment, and nothing more, its a like a cartoon in many respects. I think the American viewers deserve a better effort than this!

Summary: same ol' same ol'
Review: Well, well, well, what can I say but BRAVEHEART PART 2! This is an entertaining film, made purely for profit which it got. I did enjoy the film for what it was, a movie made by Hollywood for money making purposes. What we have here is Mel Gibson fighting for what? "FREEDOM" and why is he fighting for it? His son was killed by the enemy which was trying to maintain control over his country. SOUND FAMILIAR, it should, I noted it above. BRAVEHEART. This is the same movie, same plot, same grand scale yet without passion, honesty and charachter developement that BRAVEHEART was known for, maybe because of the director, or the script, we know it wasnt the actors, because they are great in what they had to use. If Gibson was at the helm, I would have bet that we would have seen a different film other than what we got. Look at Roland Emerichs past films, He only makes big buget films for money making purposes. He seems to care less for emotion and feeling and intensity within and trades that for explosions and blood and effects. Like I said however, it was entertaining and worth watching if you want a epic no brainer. I wonder if Mr Gibson did this movie as a favor because I dont think he would have done a movie that so closely looks like one he had already done...Different leading man would have made this movie better for that purpose, like I dont know CARROT TOP...
