Summary: I can't believe they left out the BEST line!!
Review: Great movie, but one of the BEST lines from the theatre and VHS version of Last of the Mohicans is: "Do not try to understand them and do not make them understand you for they are a breed apart and do not make sense." We got the director's cut DVD and although it has the great "big message" ending, it is missing the above line (and from what I understand, also others).In summary, video quality was good for us but the scenes are jumpy and the audio pretty bad. DVD version not worth the purchase. Stick with the VHS version

Summary: If it ain't broke...
Review: Let me start by saying that there is only one reason to own this DVD: morbid curiosity. If you enjoy watching a great film horrendeously butchered by the addition of superifilous scenes, then buy this DVD. If you like that akward, confused feeling you get when you realize a great line of dialogue has been inexplicably cut from one of your favorite movies, then buy this DVD. If you hated the unbelievably haunting and moving song, "I will follow" which originally accompanied Hawkeye's pursuit of his love through the mountains near the end of the film, then buy this DVD. And if you're in to long, preachy, forced speeches that turn what was once a touching moment between father and adopted son into a reason to hurl your remote control straight through the back of your television, then buy this DVD. Otherwise, head up into the attic and dust off the ol' VCR. Or else pray, as I do, that the original version of this film will soon be made available on DVD. Because this expanded version stinks!

Review: This is a great movie. Not too much vilonce, and not too little. This movie is a classic, and has both great screenplay, and actors. Great battle senes. This is my favorite movie. In my opionion, everyone should own this movie (including you) :-)

Summary: Michael Mann's Best
Review: Out of the 3 Michael Mann movies I own (Last of the Mohicans, The Insider and Heat) this is certainly the best. A classic story with beatiful scenery and an excellent soundtrack. Daniel Day-Lewis is fabulous.

Summary: Good Saturday afternoon fare
Review: Although not as good as the 1920 original, this movie works well with a good DVD/TV and hometheatre kit. Michael Mann once again demonstrates his mastery of period firearms, hand to hand combat, set design, battle scene choreography, 5.1 sound, and cinematography. Great sound track. Side characters were the best, Russell Means as Chingachgook, Eric Schweig as Uncas, the crass and coniving English generals, and the best was Wes Studi, who steals the show as Magua, the vengeful Heron who undercores why it is always essential to have a really good bad guy. Unfortunately, his motivation can't help but arouse sympathy, and his arguments were more coherent than I think the writers intended. I enjoyed watching this several times.

Summary: heartbreaking and beautiful
Review: I recently saw this movie with my best friend. She had seen it many times before, and it was one of her favorites. I had no idea what it was about, but I had heard of it. I thought it was one of the saddest films I had seen in a long, long time. The love shared by Hawkeye and Cora was expressive enough not to need words. The musical score was EXCELLENT, and I would like to get my hands on the CD version of it. The ending was powerful and moving. My friend and I were both wet-eyed by the time the movie was over. Though the battle scenes were pretty graphic, I would recommend this to anyone who loves drama and bravery.

Summary: The Last Of The Mohicans? Hugh!
Review: I just saw the movie "The Last Of The Mohicans" and am quite angry with it. When it begins by letting the viewer know it is based on the book by the same name, it is an extreme understatement. Sure, they have the same cast of characters with the same professions as in the book and the two forts and basic premise of one Huron Indian, Magua, wanting revenge is the same. But that is it. Not only do they make up a love interest between Hawkeye and Cora that didn't exist but they kill off the wrong people. And Chingachgook and Uncas are in no way close to the greatness they were in the book. The movie is way too simplistic and cheap, and an insult to the viewer. Since they made up most of the story, why even bother to call it "The Last Of The Mohicans"? Even a skeleton is more like its owner than this movie is of the book. If you enjoyed it for the nature scenes, then just take a nice walk in the forest -- you'll get a pleasant sense of smell added over the movie. They should have just given it a different title, for which I might give the movie 2 1/2 stars. I implore those of you who love the movie to read the book. It's difficult reading, but for someone who has just begun reading nontechnical books for the first time in twenty years, I can easily understand why it's a literary classic.

Summary: Breath-taking
Review: The lesser charactors were the best...Eric Schweig's role should have been brought out more, especially his relationship with Alice. The ending was tearful, but I could not figure out if she jumped because of Uncas or she wanted to die. I hope they remake the movie with all the shots of Uncas and Alice. (Eric Schweig is breathtaking. I would like to know what other movies he has been in.) The ending was a ? I could not tell if they were side by side. I assume yes... I did see the move when it first came out. I rented it recently, and watched it 4 times...so now I have decided to purchase it... I loved it...

Summary: Best depiction of early firearms warfare
Review: What I like about Last of the Mohicans (LOM) is that it shows the interplay between early muskets which were slow to reload and how in-close the knife/hatchet of hand-to-hand combat was still deadly. The British in bright uniforms for distant command and control and closed ranks to mass musketry/rifle effects on an open European battlefield are at a disadvantage and get ambushed continually by the Indians who play "dirty" and ambush them from thick vegetated hide positions in the American wilderness. Funny how Western armies want to fight in the open, when in the case of America we were born by mixing terrain agility and firearms/hand weapons effects--highly recommend LTC John Lock's "To Fight with Intrepidity" on early American Rangers as a companion reading to this film/video/DVD. The film really does light infantry justice, showing fluid movements and long-range firearms accuracy when needed. It shows the need for very good infantry in closed terrain to prevent close in ambush of the main body, be it in vehicles or on foot. It reminds us that hand-to-hand combat skills are still needed, to include the rifle/bayonet which incidentally is the anti-cavalry pike (see the film Braveheart) in a modern form. LOM stands on its own as the best depiction of this type of warfare with a nice human interest story of a man who will not let his woman be unrescued.

Summary: Gee, you think a decent DVD version will come out next year?
Review: I think its a set up. I think they just threw this together and so many people loved this movie they will want the DVD and then next year suddenly a new DVD edition with special features will pop up. I mean, come on, this one doesn't even have the trailer! It did have the correct ratio and that is something, but it ain't much given what else is out there.
