Summary: One of my favorites of all time
Review: Wonderful movie. Connery, Brian Keith, Bergen all have fabulous roles. Scenery is excellent, soundtrack perfect, supporting cast is incredible. Outstanding. Someday I will buy it when it comes out on DVD. Until then I have my trusty VHS copy from the AMC channel.

Summary: A Great and Timely Film
Review: Some Americans may find John Milius' sympathetic portrayl of the Raisuli, the so-called "last of the Barbary Pirates," as too painful to consider in the shadow of 9/11, nevertheless this film marks the high point, and high it is, of this director/writer/producer. Well acted, written and produced, with one of Jerry Goldsmith's best musical scores, "The Wind and the Lion" is a triumph. An adventure in the best sense of the genre, fun, tongue in cheek, this film is a treat. The facts have been altered to enhance the story and given the tremendous results all is forgiven. On the serious side, one may find a better understanding of the Islamic perspective from watching this film, although the treatment is a bit simplistic. In this case there is reason to sympathize with Islam as victim of the onslaught of Western imperialism at the beginning the modern era. One should not be too serious with the film, however. It is to be enjoyed. Sadly, MGM has yet to be moved to put this film on DVD...WHY? Not only is this a worthy film, but given recent events its story is again timely.

Summary: Everybody's Having Fun
Review: Based (very, very loosely) actual events, this film is beautifully photographed and paced, with a script slightly tongue in cheek. Principals Connery and Bergen, as well as Brian Keith as Teddy R., let us see the complex human beings behind the iconic characters. The supporting cast also quirkily on the edge of parody. The real star of this movie, though is the cinematography of Billy Williams, ably edited by Robert Wolfe. There are moments of beauty and of tense expectation, of melancholy and of surprise. No heavy mesage here, or deep meaning, but an exciting, finely crafted and above all beautiful movie.

Summary: The Wind and the Lion
Review: This is a great movie. Candace Bergen is excellent, and Brian Keith is stunning as Teddy Roosevelt. But this movie really belongs to Sean Connery. Connery is at his sexiest and smoothest here, and you actually forget that he's a Scotsman playing an Arab. This is one of his best, right up there with The Name of the Rose and the Untouchables. Forget James Bond, Raizuli is the king. You just grin every time he says "You're a lot of trouble, Mrs. Pedicaris!"

Summary: This is a must for pure entertainment!
Review: This film exemplifies the best of cinema entertainment. We anxiously await it's DVD version. The other reviews have covered this topic so well that I hesitate to add more lest the glow be diminished.

Brian Keith's portrayal of Roosevelt - outstanding in it's ability to delve past the caricature that has developed in history.

Sean Connery - his ability to create a dashing and intelligent "hero" is in peak form.

Candice Bergen - exhibits a depth in her acting talent that her "Murphy Brown" venue never showcased.

The young man who played the son of Mrs. Pedicaris also provided some worthy vignettes which carries the viewer into the memories of childhood fantasies about pirates, heroes, honor, and idealism.

This is a film that I would not hesitate to show to children, senior citizens, nor anyone in between. Love without nudity, sexual tension without bedroom gymnastics, idealism in love of country and personal faith. Ah, if only Hollywood would make more of these!

Summary: A MUST HAVE!
Review: I watched this film long ago and saw it recently on cable in silence with popcorn on my big screen. My thought was an impressive adventure film I must have on DVD! (still waiting). Sean Connery pulls off being an arab despite his accent rather well. Candice is the timeless beauty that draws the support of the USMC in early 1900's. Brian Keith plays president Teddy Roosevelt very well. I was charmed with the boy in the film who turns Connery into his hero knowing what a man with honor is suppose to be even if he is a kidnaper for his cause in other eyes. The U.S. Marines show just what they are made of admirably. There is so much in this film you would waste your life of watching movies if you pass on this one. Our current times show just how timeless this movie really is. A MUST HAVE!

Summary: I Simply Adore This Film!
Review: Other reviewers cite many of its positive aspects, i.e., epic adventure, subtle (but electric!) romance, turn-of-the-century politics, yet overlook a particular observation which hit me between the eyes upon my first viewing many years ago regarding the relationship which evolves between the Berber chief, Raizuli (Sean Connery), and his hostage, Mrs. Pedicaris (Candice Bergen). Although the specifics are very different, their emotional and intellectual relationship is much akin to that of Anna and the King in "The King & I", and it's classic: the elegant but scrappy, feisty lady....and the man she first perceives as a barbarian but who is, in his own way, noble, a man who is willing to risk his own life for his god, his country and for what he loves. Other aspects of the film are marvelous as well (Brian Keith's Teddy Roosevelt is wonderful!), but it it the relationship between the Raizuli and Mrs. Pedicaris which sells the story! Connery and Bergen are sheer perfection, and one can only imagine that they WILL meet again and long before they are both like "golden clouds on the wind"! My only regret: this film is not Closed-Captioned. I hope that will be addressed if/when it's released in DVD, so that my husband, who is profoundly hard of hearing, can enjoy it as I do.
