Summary: Still one of the best action movies of all time
Review: I remember watching it back in 1986 when it first came out and I was hooked. I watched it over and over again and made up my mindthat when I turned 18, I would join the military. But due to my health issues, I was unable to join. I still love this movie and would recommend it to anyone to loves *good* action movies.

Summary: My Favorite All-Time Movie
Review: And I'm a chic. For those of you who haven't seen this movie, it is THE BEST. Anytime my mom and I are feeling down we just curl up on our couches and watch this movie. Because of this movie, besides the Eagles' "Witchy Woman"...Otis Reddings' "Sitting on the Dock of the Bay" is one of my all-time favorite songs. Something about that scene with that music and them talking at her beach house, him about his father, I don't know...it just feels right to me. Not to mention that it has prob. the best...scene of all time...all silhouettes and just emotion. And what girl couldn't love the chestbaring volleyball scene? The chics in this movie are great too, even if they aren't the main focus. All around, if I could only buy one movie to have for all time, it would be this one. Show me the way home, honey!

Summary: hollwood star, hollywood movie: at their dumbest
Review: tom cruise has gotten super famous accepting roles that the far more intelligent and talented johnny depp turned down.
this was one of them (the equal dumb days of thunder and the -believe it or not EVEN dumber cocktail- were the others, which is okay because, amazingly depp has gotten big even WITH making intelligent choices!
no, he's not the star that cruise is but he will be far better remembered in the years to come.what has this movie inspired?
george ' duh, dubya' bush's propoganda (which reeked a bit too much of the images we used to see in the 'pro vietnam' movies).

Summary: Tom Cruise Starting at 23 years old !
Review: Top Gun really is the best of the best. this film is all about a maverick(literally)fighter pilot making it at Top Gun, the best fighter school around. Tom Cruise plays an excellent character, without doubt the best character ever invented, and he does amazingly. The soundtrack is brilliant and the script is amazing, with quotes to die for eg "i feel the need, the need for speed". This could be called a cheesy film, but it will, always, make the audience feel delightfully happy, and with a great ambition to become not only a fighter pilot, but also to be maverick. Amazing footage of planes. This film is perfection through and through. This is not an exaggeration. If you have not seen this film, watch it now.

Summary: Top fun!
Review: Top Gun is an incredible movie from 1986 that is still deservedly very famous today.
Starring ane exceptionally young Tom Cruise (a very apt name for this film), and his beautiful sidekick, Kelly McGillis, this film proved to be a complete smash hit and kick started the careers of the young stars.
The film has many great features - the breakthrough ariel photography being the standout feature. Of course, it's much talked about and vaunted but no one can sit through this film and doubt it is impressive. What is particularly excellent is the pilots' eye view you get sometimes - the scenery from the cockpit just blows your mind and its almost as if you are up there. The soundtrack just suits this film to a T as well.
What is a disappointment is the story outside of the intense ariel action. It is a bit lacklustre and dull, but to its credit the young stars do have some chemistry together.
Also Tom Cruise can only play Tom Cruise - i recently went to see the last Samurai and he is pretty much the same character in there. Whilst his charm works in his early feature film here, it soon became clear the limit of his range.
However, that is not enough to deny the film 2 stars. What does this is my DVD copy - there are NO special features at all. Nada. Zip. Oh dear, what a disappointment, escpecially as this is one of the few films when a making of documentary or feature would be genuinely exciting.
Oh well, the film doesn't quite warrant the 4 stars in this package - but its comes close. 7/10.

Summary: Trying to market military aviation to a pop-culture crowd
Review: The movie "Top Gun," inspired by Topgun (a.k.a. the U.S. Navy Fighter Weapons School) air combat maneuvering training that made air combat survivable for fighter pilots over Vietnam and has churned out highly-skilled aviators ever since, had a lot of potential. But unfortunately, they picked actors that all the teenage girls would get all "ooh-ahh"-ish over and all the guys would think were cool so they could market it to an audience that is generally indifferent toward military aviation, other than saying "hey that's a cool-looking jet." The thing that saved this film was the F-14 Tomcat. Since they didn't use any computer simulations, all the flight scenes were real. Great air combat scenes, although painting F-5s up with red stars on the tail isn't convincing for those of us who know a little something about aviation! Heck, they should've just asked to borrow one of those MiGs we bought from the Moldovans! Wait... that was after this movie. Anyway, it can be a good movie if you drown out the STUPID fairytale love story. Tom Cruise is a bad actor, he always has been and always will be and is in the business for the same reason Britney Spears is in the music industry... profitability. Kilmer is no better either. They bring people to the theater, and in turn, put $ in the pockets of the filmmakers, so they make a two-hour movie that has a lot of potential but ends up turning into background noise for the ol' midday nap.

Summary: The Best Movie Ever!!!
Review: Top Gun is, by far, the best movie I have ever seen. There is no movie that comes close to it. I have watched it about 100 times and it gets better and better everytime. Top Gun is not Tom Cruises only good movie either. ALL of his movies are good. I own 11 out of his 24 movies on DVD and waiting for The Last Samarui to come out on DVD because that is now my 2nd favorite movie.

Summary: Fun, but not realistic.
Review: "Top Gun" is not the movie to watch if you are looking for authentic military activities. It is, however, a showcase for Tom Cruise to show how hot he and his band of young stud actors are. Cruise plays Maverick, a crack Navy pilot who get the chance to go to the elite Top Gun Avaiation School. There he is placed in competition with other excellent pilots, but his cheif rival is Iceman (Val Kilmer). This is your standard story of a boy wonder trying to prove himself to a father figure. The romance with his instructor is also sort of superficial. It is, however, very funny to watch all the bloated egos trying to function, resulting in very funny lines of dialog. Also the dog fights are very cool and exciting. Good job Tony Scott. I have met a lot of pilots who act just like these guys, but it didn't seem as funny at the time, though.

Summary: Top Gun - A Staple Of 80's Culture & Fun For All Audiences!
Review: From the opening moments, as dawn breaks over the flight deck of an aircraft carrier, to the critical moment when a pilot must choose to embrace his destiny and engage in a battle to save the day, Top Gun is a fun and exciting adventure of one man's quest for greatness.

This is not a deep, philosophical movie by the stretch of anyone's imagination. It is pure fun, the hybrid of a script that is as slick and quick as the fighter jets that scream onto the screen again and again in the several action sequences of the movie.

The story, set around the Miramara Fighter School in California, (affectionately referred to by fighter jocks as "Top Gun",) is based around the life of a rogue and rebellious pilot, "Maverick", (Tom Cruise) and his flight partner and friend, "Goose", (Anthony Edwards). When an aerial engagement goes wrong over the Pacific Ocean, Maverick saves the day, rescuing his wing man from an uncertain fate and coming face to face with the legendary MIG-28. Later, when his wingman resigns his position as their squadron leader, Maverick takes his place and is given a chance to attend "Top Gun" figher school, which has been a dream of his since he can remember.

Maverick and Goose travel to Miramara, and on their first night there, Maverick meets Charlotte "Charlie" Blackwood, (Kelly McGillis), the fighter-school's beautiful, saavy enagement and tactical instructor. He, of course, is not aware of this and he tries desperately to "pick her up" to win a bet with Goose. The following morning, he learns the truth, and begins to pursue her. As expected, she becomes the love interest in the movie.

As their training progresses, Maverick runs headlong into rival pilot "Iceman" (Val Kilmer) and challenges the instructors of the school "Jester" (Michael Ironside) and "Viper" (Tom Skeritt), often pushing his luck and getting himself into trouble, while at the same time demonstrating his superior talent as a Tomcat pilot. In a tragic event, Maverick loses control of his jet and ejects, along with Goose, who is killed in the process.

The remainder of the film focuses on Maverick's struggle to overcome the loss of Goose and his personal feelings of guilt for Goose's death. In addition, Maverick, whose father died as a fighter pilot, struggles with the reality that he is always second best to his old man, and is forced to recognize that his skills make him one of the best, despite the adversities in his life.

The movie plays like an elaborate rock video, with a solid soundtrack featuring many top talents of that era. The flight sequences are impressive, especially for anyone who has a fascination with military aircraft. The story is predictable, as so many films in this genre are, but it in no way detracts from the enjoyment of the film. The characters are fun, though at times laughable, but definitely people that we care for by the end of the film.

This movie was the breakout role for Tom Cruise, who lead a cast of up-and-coming talent like the aforementioned actors as well as small, supporting roles by mainstram Hollywood talents Meg Ryan and Tim Robbins. It was also one of the breakout films for director Tony Scott (brother of legendary director Ridley Scott), who went on to direct a number of other successful films including "Crimson Tide", "Days of Thunder" and "Enemy of the State."
