Anthony Andrews gives a perfect portrayel of Sir Percy Blakeny and Jane Seymour is her best for this one of a kind performance. I hope that you enjoy this one as much as I do.

Review: I love this movie. Anthony Andrews and Jane Seymour are very good together. The entire cast did a great job. Also the costumes are wonderful and the sets are terrific. You get a bit of history along with a great movie.

Summary: The Best Film Version of the Classic Tale....
Review: I, like many others, first saw this film in a high school class (12 years ago!) and have been hooked ever since. Anthony Andrews is fabulous as Percy. Why he never became a bigger star is one of the more troubling mysteries of the last century. He OWNS this role. No one can touch him! Jane Seymour and Sir Ian Mckellan give superb performances, as well. Because this film has not been widely distributed, I used to think I was the only one who counted it as a favorite, but I now know I'm not alone. It is wonderfully charming, witty, romantic and just plain fun. If more people knew about it, I'm sure it would be as widely beloved as other classic family films such as "The Sound of Music" and "It's A Wonderful Life". Yes, it really is THAT good.

Review: Okay, one of you indy companies like ACORN ought to pick this up and get it on DVD. This is the SCARLET PIMPERNEL--the real Pimpernel not a made for six nights of commercials on tv version.

Because my parents were Romantics, I grew up on Baroness Orczy, Alexander Dumas, James Fennimore Cooper and other 19th century writers. I read the books over and over--this story is a composite of the Pimpernels' adventures based on the books by Baroness Orczy who was, I believe, herself a refugee from a revolution (and a firm believer in the rights of the aristocracy--but who cares as long as the remember thier 'noblisse oblige').

The film captures the essence of the romance between Sir Percy -- by day an English fop, and by night? -- and the beautiful French actress Marguerite. After I watched the film a couple of times, I realized the basis of their attaction -- they're both consummate actors. But who are Sir Percy and Marguerite and what side, if any, do they take in the struggle known as the French Revolution? And, who is the Scarlet Pimpernel who risks his life over and over to save the condemmed French aristocrats?

"They seek him here, they seek him there, those Frenchies seek him everywhere" jests Sir Percy to amuse his debauched friends including Prince George (IV). Will the tormented French Revolutionary played by the wonderful Sir Ian McKellan ever catch up to him? And if he does, who will win what is bound to be the best sword fight ever at a castle that looks like Mont St Michele (the British version)! McKellan is so good, one feels sympathy for his cause, but of course the original cause was supported by the aristocrats, the "Reign of Terror" that led to wholesale slaughter and destruction was not. What purpose was served by smashing all the heads of the saints that lined the westworks of Notre Dame Cathedral?

Last year I visited the former prison cells in Paris where the French aristocrats, including Marie Antoinette, were held following the Revolution of 1789. Although my sympathies still lie with the down-trodden peasants, as I read the names of those real people who met the guillotine, I could not help but feel sad at their bloody end, and glad that some of them, like the Duponts escaped to America.

Review: this movie, along with 'tess', was one of my mom's favorites, and i'll never forget imitating the unmatched foppery of anthony andrews with her for days after each viewing. this movie looked REALLY stupid when i first happened upon her watching it, but it's about as good as they get. wish i had a copy now.

Summary: That Damned Elusive Pimpernell
Review: This video was my first taste of the Scarlett Pimpernell. I HAD to read the book and see other versions. No other version demonstrated the Pimpernell's versatility of disguise or daring with such excellent acting. This is definitely the best video out there. But please note: this movie is a combination of The Scarlett Pimpernell and El Dorado (one of many sequels to The Scarlett Pimpernell).

Summary: Sink me! It's the most suitable of them all
Review: now, I had my doubts about this movie the first time I picked it up at the movie store, (after all, there is that horrible insult The Ruddy Hued Flower with Elizabeth McGovern), but I must say that it is now one of my favorites. I have read five or six of the books related to this wonderful tale, and I am quite hooked. I have seen the musical twice, and that's one of my favorites too. While Chauvelin is not quite the same as the books, or history's, he is great. Jane Seymour does a wonderful job as Marguerite, and while I am a bit partial to Douglas Sills, Anthony Andrews is the best that I have seen on film. All in all, a wonderful movie for anyone. Everyone should learn poetry from Percy. And men, this is the way to a girls heart in case you were wondering. Odd's fish, a must see!

Review: If you love the older witt in movie actors-and their abilities to act..such as Errol Flynn..then this movie is well worth having in your collection! Well directed, and the actors are well designed in their roles for this casting, it is a non-stop, not to leave your seat moment movie.
