Summary: Great Movie, but I've got to rip on it.
Review: As a long time fan of the books, this movie was at once spectacular and lacking. The landscapes and sets were awesome, so many things were exactly as I pictured them. The casting is execellent too. I expected the script to be watered down, but not as badly as it was. The thing that bothered me most was there was no sense of distance, everything seemed a day's journey away. The movie was long, but they should have had more camp scenes in between stops. I felt the Council of Elrond was weak. I didn't mind the expanded role for Arwen, but I thought Aragorn was out of character. Gandalf as well. Who is this Lurtz guy? Please. Plot elements that are subtle in the book are glaring contrasts in the movie, often it seemed to get a point across, such as the lure of the ring. All that aside, I'll go to see it again. The lanscapes, sets, and special effects alone are worth it. The butchery of the script could have been worse considering they cut so much and the movie is still three hours long.

Summary: Absolutely stunning filmmaking!
Review: Peter Jackson's stunning 1st installment of the Lord of the Rings saga is certainly the most rousing, beautiful examples of great movie-making in the last ten years. It will definately stand as one of the greatest achievements in filmmaking of the 21st century.

Certainly a labor of love for all involved, it shows what can be done when a filmization of a novel is given to a great director (Jackson, of Heavenly Creatures fame) and an excellent cast. Sean Bean (as the honorable, but corrupted Boromir) and Ian Mckellan (as the always dependable Gandalf) stand out in a cast of great performances.

This is a film that takes you completely to another place and time and does it with complete believability and instills everything with what a fantasy film needs most: conviction.
If you are going to see any film this winter, see Lord of the Rings.

Summary: lord of the rings review
Review: I think lord of the rings is the best movie I've ever seen.I liked the action and the characters and I can't wait till the next 2 come out. I don't understand the people who said harry potter was better than LOTR. I was looking foward to harry potter but I found it a major disappointment.
Also I very much agree with Casey from morree's review. Lagolas is SO hot.
A bad point though is that the movie didn't tell much about the characters. Lagolas and Grimle were suppose to end up friends but it didn't really show that in the movie

Summary: A Must See Film!
Review: A huge thank you and congratulations to Peter Jackson and everyone who took part in bringing Lord Of The Rings - Fellowship Of The Ring to life. It had all the ingredients of a great film: tragety, hapiness, suprise, action, drama and a touch of romance. For anyone who has not seen this film, I recommend it very much seeing how I have seen it 7 times already and will surely be going again soon. Again, thank you to Peter. Keep the films rolling bud. I am proud to say i'm a Kiwi!!!

Summary: Pretty good But also disapointing
Review: Hi

I enjoyed the movie it has great special effects and great story line.
Tho the theater i saw it at was a little out of focus.

I know its one hell of a story to fit into 3 hours.

I went into the movie hoping to find out a bit more about Tom Bombardil but was very dissapointed that they left it out. I was hoping they would shed some light on who he might be.
Tom is for me any way one of the big misteries of all the 3 books.
The whole Barrow Whites thing would have fitted in perfectly.

Hopefully its a deleted scene on the DVD.

Still if you havent read the book this movie is as good as they come but what movie maker could live up to a good imagination.
Listening to the people as they came out of the movie some were disapointed some loved it. It was about 50 50.

Bottom line is its stil a great flick with a great story so go see it. Probably the best fantasy film every made.

Summary: Bored of the Rings
Review: There is no point in trying to compare novel to film. First, I haven't read any of Tolkien's works and secondly the movie exists in its own right and must be judged as such. In that sense the film fails as a cinematic event. What is presented here is essentially ACT ONE of a three act film, so how can one say that the film is great or not based upon a fragment. Despite its great length the film does seem to skip past characters with ruthless efficiency. There is little in the way of character development and in some instances suitable introduction for them. Liv Tyler is a perfect example. Obviously she will feature prominently in future instalments but there is scant introduction here and, remarkably, she quickly vanishes from the scene. This is puzzling filmmaking. It seems that the director has read the novels and is so familiar with them that he has forgotten that his audience is largely uninitiated. Much has been taken as common knowledge. Notwithstanding the special effects, which are admirable, much of the movie progresses in such a hurry that names are meaningless (most are unpronouceable in any event)and the "what's his face" game rules the day. You can hear the buzz going around the theatre as people whisper "Who's he again?" The overscored track doesn't help either. The music gets quite deafening through much of the film and dialogue gets drowned out. Let's hope the DVD has a good subtitle track. I won't comment on the acting as there's not much to fault there. I was however let down by the makeup particularly on the goblins and orcs. It is not much of an improvement on what one saw in LEGEND (the Tom Cruise flick)and that goes back about ten years. Also much of this film is cast in such a gloom that to use the overused adage "one may as well be wearing night-vision goggles". Its hard to see a bloody thing at times. Then the director uses an editing process straight out of the rock video school of filmmaking and action sequences flash by in such rapid succession that your eyes go into spasm. This film would be much better if the director could just hold the camera on a scene long enough to let your eyes focus on it (and remember what I said about the gloom). Overall, not bad but not great either. I hope the next two films don't repeat the same style otherwise I shan't be along for the ride.

Summary: The Fellowship of the Rings is beautiful and stunning.
Review: I caught this movie three times in theaters and I was amazed. My jaw must have been open the whole movie. I cried, I think I actually screamed aloud, and I walked out begging the skies for the second movie to come out sooner! For all of the movie's 3 hour length, you will quite possibly feel it's just not enough. This movie is no ordinary movie. Its power transports you to the land of Middle-Earth, where all of J.R.R Tolkien's magic comes to life. The movie follows the journey of the hobbit Frodo who lives in a sleepy village in the Shire. He inherits a magic ring from his cousin Bilbo. This is no ordinary ring, my friend. it holds the power of invisibility, and was made by the Dark Lord Sauron as a tool to enslave the peoples of Middle-Earth: 'One Ring to rule them all' says the language inscribed in fire on the Ring. Sauron wants the Ring again, but he was destroyed in a battle thousands of years back. Frodo learns of this from the Wizard Gandalf, and he must leave the Shire. His destination is Mount Doom in Mordor, the only place where the ring can be destroyed. He aqquires companions on his way, called 'The Fellowship of the Ring' a group comprised of the free-peoples of the wondrous Middle-Earth who have set out to destroy this Ring together. But the road will not be easy. This movie was very, very, very good. Truly beautiful. I can't recommend it enough for those who want to escape to another world and fall in love with it.

Summary: I don't see how it could be better.
Review: Three generations of my family have fallen in love w/this book over the past 40 years; and every one of us is enchanted w/the movie. Love & respect for Tolkein shines in every detail of the production & from every cast member's face.

I think the (few) whiners should get a life. Of COURSE the book is better; nothing can duplicate the depth & beauty of a great work of literature. But this movie is going to produce a whole new generation or two of Tolkein readers.

I can't wait to see the Two Towers. Treebeard & the Ents are my favorite fictional characters of all time, and the battle of Helms Deep/destruction of Isengard is the high point of the story for me.

Summary: Curse those who curse this masterpiece
Review: I am twelve years old and I read the Lord of The Rings when I was ten and hailed it even above Harry Potter. (Though I believe that the LOTR and Harry Potter belong in two different categories) The movie was exactly as I pictured it to be. Though I do not believe any of us could possibly make the beautiful lands made by Illuvitar and the Ainur, described wonderfully by tolkien. The only, slight dissapointment is the absence of Tom Bombadil, but that's not big enough to nudge my ratings. I recommend this for tolkien fans. You WILL enjoy this terriffic adaption of the epic.
