Summary: Mel Gibson's Peronal Film
Review: This movie is the best parts of independent film and Hollywood blockbuster thrown together. Mel Gibson championed this movie and there is a lot of very anti-establishment elements of the movie (like he's doing the right thing for the wrong reason). This is also a star vehicle with huge epic battle scenes. It is the story of William Wallace, a real life hero of the Middle Ages Scotland who led a revolt against the King Edward of England to free the Scotish people. It is nearly mythic in the scope of his life, fighting for the love of his murdered wife, whom he still sees in ghost form. His battles at Falkirk and Sterling are real (although sometimes changed for convience sake, like Falkirk was actually fought on a bridge). But the story of the real life Robin Hood is hypnotising, and you never notice the three hour length. This is probably the best movie Mel Gibson will ever do, certainly the best directing (his acting is the same as Martin Riggs and Mad Max, "Man Without a Face" is his best acting), if but that is no reason to stop trying. Keep up the good work Mel.

Summary: Brave and Patriotic
Review: Mel Gibson plays William Wallace, Scottish warrior and patriot. In the time period of this movie, the Scottish are fighting against the cruel and repressive English lead by King Edward Longshanks. Edward is a very cruel and bitter man, further enraged by his son's disinterest in the affairs of state. William Wallace was intent on living a life of peace and farming, but a personal tragedy drives him to become the great general of the Scottish armies.

I was really moved by this movie. It reall brings out the tears in even the toughest of people. It successfully combines the romance and war movie genres. Usually movies which try to combine these genres do a bad job on one or both elements. Because this successfully combines both genres, I think both men and women can enjoy it equally.

Another point--the battle scenes are very realistic. If you are sensitive, you may not enjoy these scenes, but I believe they are necessary in this case. They are needed to show how terrible war is. Of course there are things worth fighting for--protection of our families and our freedoms, but it is a crime to make war for pride or for profit. We should think carefully about this point, and I believe this movie helps us to visualize this point. This movie is a definite must-see.

Summary: Well paint me blue - LOVED IT.
Review: And I'm about as Scottish (or Celtic) as Che Guevara. This film is well written, well acted, well crafted, and truly worth every award it's received. Rent it, buy it. Just watch it and enjoy.

It's an oft-told tale: of a quiet hero forced by circumstances to take a stand again forces that seek to destroy what he values most. Sound familiar? It should. It's been the basis of drama for, oh about 2,500 years. And why? Because it works.

This film takes place during a period that, unless you're Scottish or are interested in Medieval Britain, most of us know very little about. I certainly didn't know about William Wallace and I AM a history buff... The setting doesn't get in the way of the story, and I found myself more than entertained. I found myself inspired. Not by Wallace's specific struggle, but by Gibson's treatment of the ideas behind it.

Now, the violence and gore may turn off some viewers, but this film packs a wallop in telling its tale. There's all the elements of the epic, including romance and betrayal and, of course, war. Gibson has been justly acclaimed for faithfully reproducing the look and feel of medieval Scotland -- blood, guts, mud and all.

Oh and to the "not historically accurate" nay-sayers: I don't care if it's historically inaccurate. So what? If I wanted historical accuracy I'd read a dmn non-fiction book or watch PBS. Sheesh.

Summary: Among the best epic films of all time.
Review: The epic movie Braveheart tells the story of 13th century Scottish hero William Wallace. Mel Gibson not only starred as William, but also directed this film. Braveheart was released in the spring of 1995, the film's running time is 2 hours and 50 minutes. Braveheart won 5 Academy Awards including: Best Picture, Best Director, Best Sound Effects Editing, Best Make-up, and Best Cinematography. Braveheart was also nominated for Oscar's in the following categories: Best Original Screenplay, Best Music Score, Best Sound, Best Editing, and Best Costume Design.

Summary: William Wallace a 13th Century Scottish man that leads his people into battle against Edward the Longshanks and his English troops. The battle is over the oppression and brutality that the Scottish people are being put through. William leads his people into many great battles, some of the battles are very bloody but done in the right way to make this film more effective. William is shown charging his people up with patriotism as the prepare for battle. His men are all loyal and ready to die for Scotland. This film is well made, and tells a great story. If you have not seen this movie, you have missed Mel Gibson at his very best. This movie is a must see for anyone who loves history or just a good action war movie. I promise you will not be disappointed.

Summary: A one-of-a-kind epic!
Review: Mel Gibson's "Braveheart" is a thundering, full-blooded epic that, I think, will rise above even its hardiest detractors to rank among some of the greatest biopics in movie history (and here I'm thinking "Lawrence of Arabia" and "Patton," which I'm sure were on Gibson's mind when he made this picture).

Is this movie a true-to-life portrait of the real William Wallace? I doubt it, and Mel Gibson pretty well admits that it isn't, but who cares? Ships make no sound in the vastness of space, but that doesn't stop us from enjoying (and buying into) "Star Wars." If I'm going to give William Wallace and what he stood for (maybe) any serious thought at all, it's going to be precisely in the context of a movie like this.

What really shines through, especially after repeated viewings, is Gibson's absolute passion for the art and craft of filmmaking. "Braveheart" crackles with excitement, texture, energy, feeling. It hardly feels like a three-hour film; we are so consumed with William Wallace's bloody quest to rid Scotland of its "Anglish" possessors that we hardly even want the movie to end. By the end of my first viewing, I felt exhausted and more than a little awed by the lengths to which Gibson's character went to liberate his country. Today I'm just in awe of "Braveheart," period. The Academy obviously showed good sense (for a change) when it handed Gibson the top two awards for 1995.

Yeah, the movie is gruesome and violent, but all in the name of presenting its character in the boldest possible light: to portray Wallace as a larger-than-life hero whose local conflicts bestow upon him the mantle of international legend. (After all, didn't a certain country come along centuries later and take up a certain beef against the British in its pursuit of freedom?) Wallace, at least in the terms of this movie, was a true hero, dedicated to avenging the murder of his beloved wife and devoted to the liberty of his fellow countrymen. What a guy.

Gibson plays the lead with equal passion. Now here is an actor who knows how to play a mythical character in a film of undeniably huge scope. Unlike Russell Crowe's dour, dreary work in "Gladiator," Gibson plays Wallace with great humor and teeth-gnashing savagery. You feel every instant of Wallace's pain and share in his joy, thanks to Gibson's remarkable portrayal. Why he wasn't even nominated for Best Actor is beyond me. And by the way, in a fight, Wallace would rip the lungs out of Gen. Maximus inside of about two seconds.

Patrick McGoohan excels as the vile Longshanks, and Sophie Marceau provides much-needed feminine beauty as Wallace's French-born lover on the side of the English. There's also Brendan Gleeson as Wallace's childhood sidekick -- not that Wallace really needs one.

I could go on. You get the idea. "Braveheart" is a great film. I don't know who among you hasn't seen it by now. If you haven't, then do so immediately. Gibson will probably never be this good again.

Summary: Freedom!
Review: William Wallace returns to Scotland to find his country without a king and being run by the English. He finds his own home burned and his father murdered. This inspires him to try to reunite his country and take it back from the English. He aligns himself with the leading family being led by Robert the Bruce. He finds that they are more concerned about their own best future than that of the country. Wallace goes on to unite his own army and lead them against the English. Gibson plays this part as if he really was Wallace and his supporting cast is equally magnificent. The violence in the movie is very graphic but never overpowering. The scenery and the way it is depicted in the movie are beautiful. This is classic movie about a person giving every thing for what they believe in and deserves to be watched repeatedly.
