Summary: Epic, Passionate, Masterpiece
Review: A movie that can be viewed countless times. Great drama, action and comedy. The scenery is stunning and the performances are of an all-star caliber.

Summary: Historical Inaccuracies!
Review: Let me start off by saying that this is one of the best movies of the '90s and one of my personal favorites. The movie itself is excellent while the amazing score by James Horner only adds to this picture. The normal viewer will get a great amount of enjoyment out of this picture. However, there are some rather large historical inaccuracies that provide the basis for the whole movie. If you are familiar with William Wallace, these will slightly take away from the movie. Otherwise, it is an excellent piece of american cinema not to be missed.

Summary: Third time was the charm!
Review: The first time I started to watch this exquisite video, I had to stop the video and regroup. Scenes and acting were so poignant, that it struck too close to my senses. The second time I attempted to watch this instant classic, could only be tried after watching "Back to School," with Rodney Danagerfield. Got through the first few battle scenes that were, as stated in the film, conclusive that the Scotts fought like "warrior poets." After having spent 24 years in the military, I still don't know how I would handle such close order combat as was depicted in this epic. Fortunately, some good news fell upon me one day, and I was actually able to watch the entire film all the way through, and yes, this infantry "grunt" welled up with tears. Gratification that I had come this far with severe and chronic PTSD was a milestone in my personal "therapy." See this one folks, but be prepared for the experience of a lifetime in moviedom. As lengthy as the film is, time is never a consideration, but I would have enjoyed watching the Scotts ultimately win their independance in the final battle. This one heads my collection.

Summary: Not enough Stars to rate this one!
Review: There is no real place to start, but I will give it a shot. I am going to keep from saying this is probably the greatest movie of all time, throughout this review. I am not Scottish, but there is nothing bad about this movie. There are little things and have heard that it is not historically correct, but come on when the first battle is to begin and Mel Gibson gives the freedom speech, you cannot help but feel the goose-bumps and the hair standing up on the back of your neck! You can not even hear any of the Aussie in Gibson and gives maybe the performance of his life. The story of a Man fighting for freedom and for the love of his fallen wife, how can women not like this movie too. I watched it with my fiance last week and we both were in tears at the end. Its got, fighting, great story, great acting, awesome lines, and how could you live with yourself if you do not have this one? "Every man dies, not every man really lives," to quote William Wallace (Mel Gibson). Feel the goose-bumps they are telling you to get this great movie!

Summary: Those rotten English!
Review: One cannot deny the effort toward period realism put into this epic. But I like my "realistic" movies to be a little more balanced when protagonists and antagonists are compared. In short, anyone who opposes or betrays Wallace is shown to be close to a cartoon villain. Since most of these are English, Gibson panders effectively to latent American Anglophobia - not a surprise that the movie was so popular in the US. Such an approach is however silly and over-simplified. At least Robert the Bruce is shown to be dealing with the mental pangs of shifting loyalties, and patriotism vs pragamatism. Not surprisingly, one of the few actors in this film that can act, Angus MacFadyen, portrays the Bruce.

I'd certainly view the film as much more effective if the "villains" were a bit less one-dimensional. Patrick McGoohan is particularly disappointing, his over-the-top portrayal of Edward I being close to a lampoon. And I'm sorry, but I also choke a bit on some of the nearly laughable historical inaccuracies. I know Gibson didn't intend to create educational material here, but knowing how many people take their understanding of history from "historical" movies implies at least some measure of responsibility on the part of the film maker. Of course, what can one expect with the overrated, undertalented Gibson at the helm?

Summary: never let the facts get in the way of the truth
Review: I will start by saying that I love this film, and that I have seen it over 10 times (8 of those times in the theater). I think that it was well acted, and was a great mark in Scottish patriotism. Studies have shown that whenever Braveheart is shown in theaters in Scotland that the instances of vandalism and violence against English transplants increases exponentially.

I saw an interview on the history channel with the screen writer, and he said something odd... he said that he never lets the facts get in the way of the truth... The movie is historically inaccurate, but its job is to tell a story and to put across a message, that of the English being total bastards and the Scots being pristene... The battle of Stirling was known as the battle of Stirling Bridge... the Scots waited until the English were on the bridge, and against chivalric law attacked before they were ready, raining arrows on them and collapsing the bridge and continuing to slaughter the English as they drowned in the river. But this doesn't make the Scots look pristene. Notice that when the Scots sneak oil behind the lines that it is the battle that they lose. Still a great movie, and I will watch it more times.
