Summary: They fought like warrior poets, they fought like Scottsmen..
Review: William Wallace once said, "Every man dies, but not every man really lives." You have not lived until you see this movie. Braveheart is the best movie ever. Mel Gibson takes you through one of the most powerful stories told in modern time. His story of a commoner turned savage turned hero is the highest calibur of entertainment available. If there is one movie to have in you DVD collection, it's Braveheart. FREEDOM!!!

Rating: 4 stars
Summary: Brave attempt; Heart in the right place!
Review: That's what I say about this film. It's interesting on so many levels; for example: it's a rousing adventure and a somewhat tender love story, despite some really barbaric scenes. Let me just say that I HATE Mel Gibson! I am not a fan of his, the only reason I have this film is because it won the Best Picture Oscar of 1995 -- that's all! But I do enjoy watching this film for it's vast shots of land (John Toll won the Best Cinematography Oscar), the battle scenes, and when Gibson dies in the end! Yes, it's harsh, I know, but that's how I feel about Gibson, who, in my opinion, is not a great actor or director (he just got lucky that year, like Kevin Costner, who I also hate with a great passion, did in 1990 for "Dances with Wolves.") Patrick McGoohan, as King Edward Longshanks, is wonderful as the resident baddie who, of course, outsmarts William Wallace (Gibson) and has him killed. And those two beautiful ladies, Sophie Marceau and Catherine McCormack, are lovely as Isabelle and Murron respectively. Anyway, I give the film a good rating, not because of Gibson, but because of the supporting cast, the beautiful shots of the green lands, and the battles fought. Winner of 5 Academy Awards including Picture, Director (Gibson), Cinematography, Sound Effects Editing, and Makeup.

Summary: Great film, but don't watch it for the history lesson
Review: Don't get me wrong, this is one of my all-time greatest films. But i feel i must write in defence of the people complaining about the historical innacuracies. They are not just minor. This is not a historically correct film at all, in fact in certain places it was down-right fabricated. As a Scot, who has studied the period intensively, trust me. So please my American friends who purchase this film, admire it for it's great stroyline and great acting, but don't write a history essay on Scotland using this as the study aid!!

Summary: Great historical epic
Review: "Braveheart" is the tale (with some poetic license) of William Wallace, a thirteenth century Scottish warrior who leads a Scottish rebellion against the English. Make no mistake though, this isn't just a blood and guts feature. It is also a tale of star-crossed love and political intrigue.

Gibson gives a great performance as Wallace, but he's not alone. Sophie Marceau and Catherine McCormack both offer great performances as his love interests, and Patrick McHoohan is outstanding as King Edward. Also, the musical score is beautiful and profoundly moving. This movie really puts one in mind of the great epics of Hollywood, and it is every bit as enjoyable.

As for the DVD, I enjoyed Gibson's commentary, but there's not a lot else other than the usual A/V features. Fortunately, a film of this caliber doesn't require any bonus materials to make it a worthwhile purchase

Summary: A masterpiece.
Review: Yes, I know this movie has its historical fudges (battle of Stirling Bridge with no bridge, kilts, woad war paint and a far too old princess: Hey who says WWF fans don't know their history) but one should never be so nitpicky and refuse to watch a true masterpeice just because of some truly minor errors. Its a drama based in an historical era, not a documentary of the war for Scottish Independance. Mel Gibson is superb in this movie despite some refrences to his Lethal Weapon days (more good flicks in my opinion) and he captures the heart of just what Wallace may have been like. If you like action, romance, drama, and a bunch of Scottsmen whooping Englishmen (hey I can't help it, I'm part Scott) than you'll love Braveheart. If you've never seen it than you should definitely try it, you'll love it.

Summary: Remarkable.. and definite epic.
Review: Don't you love movies like this? Movies with soul? No matter how many times you watch it, you can't help but be sucked in. The quality of the transfer is very good, the aspect ratio is great and the soundtrack sounds awesome in the HiFi. Buy it!

Summary: Gibson can't follow this up...
Review: Mel Gibson is one of my favorite entertainers. Ever since I first saw him in Mad Max, I always thought he was a down to earth guy with immense talent. The first movie Gibson directed, Man Without a Face, was very good but not as well noticed. With Braveheart, he put 130% into his work, and it shows. He was more concerned with how the entire movie came out then with his own performance. Although he was very good, the entire movie is spectacular and emotional. Never have I seen a movie that so gracefully moves from scenes of delicate emotion to utter and total bloody brutality, and right back to heartfelt emotion. There is so much going on with these characters that they all stand out. Patrick McGoohan turns in an especially evil performance as the King. It is so easy to fall in love with Catherine McCormick, who plays his wife at the start, that you fall right in with William Wallace from the beginning after her demise. Sophie Marceau is just as captivating as the French Princess. Gibson surrounds himself with talented and unknown actors who support him, and the movie, so well. The film is epic, and totally enthralling. The scenery is gorgeous, the music soundtrack by James Horner is the most beautiful and haunting piece of work he has ever done. At over 3 hours long, it grabs hold of you and moves at such an efficient pace that you don't realize when the 3 hours are up. Gibson did a great editing job with his people and makes sure the story keeps your intrest. Anyone who complains about historical inaccuracies should listen to Gibson's commentary on the DVD. He knows full well that many things in the film are not true and admits to cinematic licensing...in other words, it's just a movie, not a history lesson. The true story of William is not far off in his defeating of the Engliah army at Sterling and his torturous execution, which in real life was much worse then what is shown in the movie. Much can be debated about the true history of William Wallace, as it is truthfully mentioned at the beginning of the film, 'History is written by those who have hanged heroes...'. Mel has not directed a movie since this one, and I can't blame him. He won an Oscar for best Director, and the movie won for best film. How can you top that?

Summary: A visual comic-book
Review: "Braveheart", as a film, has many problems. Many have noted its very slight grip on reality, its playing fast and loose with historical fact. More than that, it is a clear demonstration of the Hollywood movie view of life: make it bigger, louder, brasher; rearrange all the parts and add in new ones, no matter how inconsistent, until there's something there for everyone; keep it all full of colour-and-movement so no-one notices how fluffy and insubstantial it all is; and who cares if it bares no comparison to anything truthful or real ?

"Braveheart" plays like a film designed by committee (very typical of Hollywood, that, but this film more than most): scene after scene appears to have been constructed to appeal to particular demographic groups, and they roll through the options on as if going through a PR person's checklist. Beyond that, there is the absurdity of Wallace's "relationship" with the French princess (who in real life was a little girl, and one he would never meet), the pandering to myth of using "prima nocta" as a clunky plot device, and a fairly complete misrepresentation of the politics of the Highland clans.

Perhaps worst of all, Gibson gives free reign to his infamous homophobia, undermining the plot's main antagonist and trading away dramatic tension for the sake of cheap sniggers. And all the considerable energy the film has managed to muster is dissipated in the protracted last quarter of the film, where the director strives too hard -- and for far too long -- to make the same points he began the film with.

The real Wallace was a stirring and admirable figure, fully worthy of a large-scale movie. But this one, disrespectful and misrepresentative as it is, isn't it.

The marks "Braveheart" gains here are for the vigour of its telling, and the sheer mechanics of an impressive production. The marks lost are for the lost opportunities of telling a grand story.

As a movie, "Braveheart" is exciting, loud, and spectacular. But it's also absurd, overblown and disappointing.

Summary: Mad Max in a Kilt
Review: This film made me want to don a kilt and make a grab for the nearest caber I could toss. Truly a film for every corporate cubicle dweller, dreaming of those long exstinct days of romance, heroic deeds, great causes and big swords, not to mention bad personal hygiene and nasty hovels. The scene where the English lord comes down from the castle to claim 'first night' with the young Scottish bride reminded me of that old British music hall line: "Take my wife... Please!"

Summary: Greatest Movie Ever
Review: This is by far the greatest film I have ever seen. It moved me more than anything else in my life. The feeling you get when you watch this movie is unlike any other. You want to cry and shout out with joy at the same time. The plot is great as is the acting and the scenes. Greatest movie ever. Nothing else can come close.
