Summary: When I was your age TV was called Books
Review: Take a good fairy tale story and poke some good clean adult comedy at it and you get the Princess Bride.
What makes this film really great is that everyone of all ages can enjoy it: Men, women, boys and girls. Somehow the creators of the film took every cliché in the book and put a new spin on it.
The fact that the entire movie is set in the imagination of a child reluctantly listening to his grandfather reading to him makes any silliness in the movie not only forgivable but absolutely essential.
I've shown this movie to dozens of people and every single one of them loved it.

Summary: What more could you ask for?
Review: The Princess Bride was one of the best films of 1987, I remember it coming out, and I remember the fact that barry Norman liked it loads too. The blurb basically gives you everything, heroes, giants, wizards, villains, and true love. To make it not just your basic, average, everyday, ordinary, run-of-the-mill, ho-hum fairtytale. My (very old) copy of the film which I got from a video rental stop also has a sticker on it saying 'absolutely ridiculous, but enjoyable'. Which it most certainly is. It is a stand alone film which I watch every year because it shares something with the likes of It's A Wonderful Life and Harvey, and also has a little bit of a dark side. To compare it to another film and ay it is not on the same plain is sloppy reviewing, it doesn't ever fall the wrong side of silly. If youy can be like the boy in the film and get past the 'kissing' bit, you will catch some great performances from Mandy, Chris, Peter Cook and Mel Smith. and I think it is a shame that cary's career never rocketed after this film. The performances are spot on, Andre's funny brute, Mandy's tortured swordsman, and Guest's count of pure evil. There are quotes aplenty you could be using in everyday speech and sub plots there. It's my favourite film.
Oh yes, Cary has a very good English accent because he's bloody ENGLISH!!! ...

Summary: Love It or Hate It
Review: This is one of those movies that it is impossible to be undecided about. There's no neutral - either you love it or you hate it.

The story starts out well. The narrative proceeds quickly and with a very well-defined sense of suspense and purpose. However, by the time you're thirty minutes into it, the slapstick comedy begins to become rather tiresome as the suspense thins. Too, the cuts from the grandfather's narrative to the story itself, and back again, can be rather frustrating at times. Overall, great becomes goofy, and by its end, you're glad its over. The only redeeming qualities of the film are the excellent swordplay on the Cliffs of Despair and the witty verbal exchanges during its final climax and resolution.

The overall impression it leaves you with is that this would make an excellent comedy or an excellent romance - but not both at the same time!

To be brutally honest, I hated it. However, it merits praise simply for the fact that it left me with a defined impression of itself. Most of the junk on film nowadays is hardly art enough to merit the time or effort required to form a distinct opinion about it. And meaningless junk is what "The Princess Bride" is certainly not!

Summary: Absolute mind candy
Review: There are DVDs with more bells and whistles, but this is perfect for this particular movie. The movie itself is a timeless classic that includes the youngest viewers in the experience but let's the older viewer in on all the jokes. Many of the lines in the movie can be carelessly dropped into casual conversation to reveal who the "Princess Bride" fans are in almost any crowd.

A friend of mine refers to this movie the "one" that he stops to watch - the whole thing - whenever he walks into a room where its playing.

This is a movie that can smirk without being cynical.

Summary: Romantic and charming fairy tale
Review: My roommate recently bought this dvd and had been trying to get me to watch it for a while. Finally, the other night, I sat down and watched it and I was pleasantly surprised. This movie is the story of the love between the beautiful Princess Buttercup and the dashing and handsome Westley, told by a grandfather to his grandson (played by Peter Faulk and Fred Savage). Rob Reiner put together the perfect cast for this fable that will be entertaining to all ages (even those dreaded kissing scenes!) Robin Wright Penn and Cary Elwes are perfect as the fairy tale couple that this romantic comedy focuses on. Mandy Pantinkin and Andre the Giant are very good as the side kicks that help Westley retrieve his love from the evil Prince Humperdink. This special edition dvd has lots of interesting stuff for the dedicated "Princess Bride" fan (like my roomie), such as commentaries and documentaries. A nice addition to any dvd collection and very good family entertainment.
