Summary: Don't Compare it to the Book, and it's a Great Movie
Review: This movie is an incredibly simplified version of the book, which is awesome in itself, but the movie is still entertaining. I have to say it can go a little too far on the swashbuckling bit, and it's harder to get a sense of character developement and the passage of time in the movie than in the book, making the movie hard to follow. But if you're interested in a good way to spend money, DON'T see Rollerball-save it for the Count of Monté Cristo.
(Unsurprisingly, Hollywood came up with an incredibly predictable, yet more satisfying end to the movie than Dumas provides in his book.)

Summary: Different from the book. So what?
Review: I recently saw this movie. Okay, I actually saw it twice; within 2 weeks. That is how much I liked this movie. Yes, it's different from the book. I've read quite a few of Dumas' works and they are wonderful. That does not mean that because the movie differs (quite a bit actually) that it is bad.
If the movie were to correspond exactly with the book it would have been boring. There are simply too many plot twists and turns in the novel to make it as a movie. I think the screenwriters did a good job sticking to the main part of the story, and streamlining it to fit into 2 1/2 hours.
The main character, Edmond Dantes (played by Jim Caviezel) is a wonderfully complex character; at one point he says, "Do not rob me of my hate. It is all that I have."
To quote a phrase, this movie will keep you on the edge of your seat.

Summary: The Count Rocks
Review: I saw this movie and i thought it was awesome. It is simply a magnificently well-crafted film. The Count of Monte Cristo is superbly acted woderfully designed in high adventure style. The swordfight scenes are simply excellent. I would compare it to The Mask of Zorro in great entertainment.

Summary: A great update to a classic.
Review: This is a great version of the classic story of the Count of Monte Cristo. I know this is the latest of a long string of versions. I have seen half a dozen versions, and this one is a stands up well to the others. In fact, current movie goers would prefer this one. It is much faster paced then any of the earlier versions. There are plot changes that make the story make more sense to a modern viewers. The preformances by the main characters are great. Guy Pearce and James caviezel are great. Richard Harris is also at his best.

Summary: This is a fantastic film!!!
Review: I just saw this wonderful movie earlier today and I must say that it was worth every penny. The filming locations were beautiful, the acting was very nice and the costumes were amazing. The only complaint I would have about the film would be the thick Bronx accent of Luis Guzman. He did a very good job of playing the Count's "man servent" but it's a shame he was unable to shake his accent to make the role more authentic. Other than that little "flaw" I would highly recommend this movie and I can't wait until it's on DVD. It's bound to be full of some great extras.

Summary: From the mouth of babes...
Review: My 13 year old daughter commented after having viewed this movie, "I am glad that I saw the movie before I read the book ...", and for once, I would have to wholeheartedly agree with her, as there is little similarity between the movie and Dumas' work.

On a more positive note, please be advised that my youngest daughter and my husband, who were initially intrigued by the theatrical trailers, thought the movie "was more than okay".

Summary: A MUST SEE MOVIE
Review: Dashing young sailor Edmond Dantes (Jim Caviezel) is an honest young man whose peaceful life and plans to marry the beautiful Mercedes (Dagmara Dominczyk) are abruptly shattered when his best friend, Fernand (Guy Pearce), who wants Mercedes for himself, deceives him. Set up to be unjustly sentenced to the infamous island prison of Chateau D'If, Edmond is trapped in a nightmare that lasts 13 years. Haunted by the baffling course his life has taken, over time he abandons everything he ever believed about right and wrong and is filled with all-consuming thoughts of vengeance against those who betrayed him. With the help of an equally innocent fellow inmate (Richard Harris), Dantes plots and succeeds in his mission to escape from prison, whereupon he transforms himself into the mysterious and wealthy Count of Monte Cristo. With cunning ruthlessness, he cleverly insinuates himself into the French nobility and systematically destroys the men who manipulated and enslaved him.

Summary: Worth seeing
Review: This version of The Count of Monte Cristo is an enjoyable and entertaining movie that's definitely worth seeing, although those who like Dumas's novel may find a lot to complain about.

It's understandable that a lot of details will get lost in turning a massive novel into a two hour movie, but some things were disappointing. Edmond's revenge wasn't nearly as devastating as it should have been -- what was shown in the film was a pale shadow of what occurred in the novel -- and the absence of Haydée and the resulting change in the ending are two things that stand out in particular.

Still, Edmond seems to reach the same conclusion in the film as in the book (though arriving there by very different routes), that only by moving beyond vengeance and hatred can he be happy. That happiness is much more bittersweet in the novel, though.

Apart from the two-part musketeer film from the 1970s, I haven't seen a faithful adaptation of a Dumas novel, and as this and other recent attempts show, we're not likely to see one soon. But despite its oversimplification and its Hollywood ending, I still enjoyed this movie.

Caviezel was very good as Edmond/Monte Cristo, Pearce was certainly easy enough to dislike, and Dominczyk was very good as Mercédès. Those who haven't read the novel should like this movie, and if you've read it and can set that aside (it's easier to do that with this film than with the Richard Chamberlain version of this story) you will probably like it as well.

Summary: what is wrong with you people????
Review: i would just like to say wake up it is a movie. even though it does not go along with the book it is still a good one. who cares about it matching the book. alot of movies don't match the book. and movies that match the book are not exciting any way you already know what is going to happen yea!!! if you know already why do you need to see a movie about it. get over yourselves. i personally think that this movie had a great ending and not to mention some really hot guys. watch a movie to watch a new good movie not to watch a redo of an old book.

Summary: Looking for Seconds, Maybe Thirds
Review: It was youthful passion, betrayal and truimph with a twist. This drama puts a smile on my face. A beautiful view of Europe's Italy that took my heart in to another era. Real love is the victor and jealously suffers under its own spoil.

While prolonged confinement and persecution transforms the innocent Dontes from a less privileged and ignorant sea-dweller, to that of a grave Count of outstanding valor and fortune. It's definitely not another 'chic-flick' the Count of Monte Cristo is worth seeing.
